Cant believe Sony pulled out 2, 3 million sellers back to back in the same calendar year.
BTW, what's the latest on the sales of SotC remaster? That's the game that started this amazing 2018 run of Sony's 1st/2nd party effort.

And the generation is not over yet.
Sony's 2019 run starts with Days Gone. That's their the only title that is confirmed for 2019 [although Dreams will also be there].

GoT, TLOU2 and DS are all without date.

Congrats, Insomniac.

And to think, there are still tons of us that have yet to buy the game. After I finish DQ11, I'm all in on Spidey.

No no, Sony owns the Marvel's Spider-Man IP. This specific Spider-Man is owned by them. Not talking about the overal Spider-Man IP. This is a 1st Party game just like they own Bloodborne.
Do you have any source for this? They definitely have rights to this game in perpetuity, but I would be absolutely shocked if Sony actually "owned" any version of the Spider-Man character at all.

I mean, there is a reason the game isn't called "Sony's Spider-Man".

I'm not sure how anyone can say this with certainty unless they've seen the actual contracts. In the multimedia, multichannel world we're in there is very likely to be a large number of clauses which limit the use is specific ways, ranging from Sony only owning the film rights to Spiderman through to any form of interactive media.

My thinking is that Sony only own the flim rights (I could be wrong) and therefore this game would have a custom deal which could any combination of ownership. I don't know any of this, so am willing to also say this could be utterly wrong!

Ghost's of Sushima should be late 2019 if not Spring/Fall 2020.

I'm relatively confident this isn't the case. Marvel still owns the White Spider-Man, but Sony owns the publishing right for the game.

It'd be crazy if Marvel let Sony have this specific Spider-Man as part of their ownership.

Sony paid the game and will pay the sequels for it, all of those are full time exclusives to Playstation platforms.

This is so well deserved, I can't even imagine how many godly hours they put on how web slinging works. And the campaign, honestly I didn't thought it would be that great. I mean I expected it to be good, because Insomaniac, but man it's probably one of the best video game story this year. It has all the movie spectacle that you would expect but it also has a 'heart', I honestly like it better than the Spiderman Homecoming.

What I mean by "I don't think Sony owns the white-Spidey" is that I don't think Sony can, with 100% creative control - create a comic book, merchandise and live-action movie line of the Insomniac-written storyline and interpretation of Spider-Man.

No they don't own Spider-Man. Never said that. They own the Spider-Man PS4 IP. This game in specific they own. SIE owns the IP. Not Marvel\Insomniac. Just like Bloodborne. Insomniac nor From Software own those two specific games. Look up the IP registration for both games. They are both owned by SIE. They are a 1st Party venture.

Marvel obviously owns the Spider-Man IP. No one's denying that. I mean, duh. I'm just saying this game is a 1st Party WWS game, not just a Sony published game. They own the IP to this specific game "Marvel's Spider-Man"

I wonder after this massive success Marvel is all:

"Hey Sony, do you want to take a look at any other of our IPs?"

I've seen people get upset whenever this is mentioned, especially when you factor in the exclusive element. But I think DIsney offering Sony more marvel characters as an exclusive is a logical progression to their relationship.

A gritty, single player story based narrative Wolverine game seems absolutely perfect fit for Sony Santa Monica.

Yes I see what you mean, looking back I guess when you say "Spider-Man" in your comment "This specific Spider-Man is owned by them." you are referring to this game and not this iteration of the character.

Although I'm not sure it could be called a WWS game, since Insomniac are not a first party studio and don't fall under that umbrella.

Nah I meant the game. Not Spider-Man in general. Right but they published, funded, and are involved with the game. They own the IP\Game so it's a WWS SIE 1st Party game. That's why last E3 they treated it as their big 4 WWS game they showcased with TloU 2, Ghost of Tsushima, and Death Stranding. Insomniac doesn't own the game whatsoever. Just like Bloodborne or Crash Team Racing. Same situation. Both owned by Sony.

Better comparison would be Crash Team Racing. Sony owns that specific IP while Activision owns the IP in general but would still need Sony's go ahead if they wanted to do anything with it

Good example. Yeah exactly. Marvel's Spider-Man is owned by SIE. Anything that happens with this specific Spider-Man game is on Sony. Just like Bloodborne is owned by SIE and not From Software. And yeah, Crash Team Racing is owned by SIE and not Activision.

I'm relatively confident this isn't the case. Marvel still owns the White Spider-Man, but Sony owns the publishing right for the game.

It'd be crazy if Marvel let Sony have this specific Spider-Man as part of their ownership.

I'd be surprised if that isn't the case. I expect Sony own the rights to this game and any sequels and probably have first option on any future Spider-Man gaming projects that may impact the brand now that they've invested so much into it.

There's no way they let a Crash/Spyro situation happen again.

If Marvel/Disney want to take Spider-Man (the character) multiplatform it will be with a separate franchise not "Marvel's Spider-Man" or any of its sequels.

Do you have any source for this? They definitely have rights to this game in perpetuity, but I would be absolutely shocked if Sony actually "owned" any version of the Spider-Man character at all.

I mean, there is a reason the game isn't called "Sony's Spider-Man".

I think some people are mixing up Intellectual Property and copyright. Sony probably owns or co-owns copyright on this game as they've funded it, but they don't actually own any version of the Spider-Man character.

But without knowing what contract they have (which I think will be for a trilogy possibly with options for more) we can only speculate on what deal the companies have struck.

Edit - small print on the PS store says:

Damn I just realized, now that Spider-Man is out we don't have release dates or even announced release windows for any of the big upcoming Sony games... (not counting Days Gone). Hopefully they make PSX great again this year.

Let's hope so!

Next big one is The Last of Us 2. Either Death Stranding or Ghost of Tsushima could slip into 2020 but one of them is coming next year along with Dreams. Days Gone will be leading 2019 so that's already 1 SIE game next year.

If we're basing it off how they did it this year. We got 3 SIE games spread throughout the year. GoW, Detroit, and Spider-Man. Two of them were bigger than the rest.

So I'm going to say the heavy hitters will be TloU Part 2 and Ghost of Tsushima, with Dreams and Days Gone as a bonus.

Sherlock Holmes is open domain IP, but BBC is the owner of their version of Sherlock. The specific visuals, the style, other original stuff. If someone wants to create a new Sherlock Holmes show, they can do it, but they can't rip off the contributions of BBC.

I think it is the same now with Spiderman game on PS4. Sony, as a publisher, has the rights to the specific things they contributed to the Spiderman IP, and of course, they decide on sequels/cross-promotions, etc.

Getting games of this quality for other characters like Iron Man and Captain America would be incredible.
Hell, with how popular the MCU is this could be a real goldmine for sony, some of their best studios like GG, ND and SP would be perfect for this.

I kinda doubt it... the situations aren't really similar. Spider-Man is wholly owned by Marvel. You can't just make a new Spider-Man show or other media property. We are not privy to the details of the licensing agreement here, but any project that features the white Spider-Man will have been explicitly green lighted by Marvel. Sony doesn't have any right to do what they want with the character without approval.

Sherlock Holmes would be more like the character Thor. As a mythological figure, anyone is free to use an iteration of Thor is a new media property, but companies like Marvel or Sony have their own versions of the character that they own the rights to.

Sony owns the game but Marvel can do whatever they want with everything inside the game outside of game industry (merchandise, comics, stories, etc.).

Nah, screw this. First Party studios should work on their own stuff, not on licensed IP's.

And they're going to because of how successful all of their latest efforts were. Well, Ghost of Tsushima remains to be seen, but assuming it does well, Sucker Punch (the most likely superhero candidate) would surely continue that as a franchise, at least for a few years.

They could do both. Each studio with one team on their own IP and another on the Marvel license. Besides, they'll probably be mostly working on sequels during the next few years (Horizon 2, GoW2 and probably Ghost of Tsushima 2 and Days Gone 2 if the games do well). Not that I don't want them, but breaking them up with Marvel games would help keep things fresh.

Imagine each of Sony's first party studios tackling their own pillar of the Marvel universe.

We'd have a whole MVGU on our hands.

Oh and with Bend: Ghost Rider.

Think it's time to officially retire from giving sales info on Era. I've been wasting so much of my time here and its REALLY not worth it. At the end of the days sales discussion will always boil down to hyperbole and console warring

Adios amigos. Catch ya on the flip side

This is a shame, but I'll be following you on twitter. I always love your posts here.

I honestly can't picture an Iron Man game being fun. The traversal would be beyond monotonous.

How would it be monotonous?! He can fly! And using short bursts to dodge would be awesome. And have you seen Infinity War? So many possibilities for melee combat with that nano-suit! It has potential to be a FPS with fantastic melee combat where you can fly. What's not to love?

First party studios working on Marvel IP....

While I am sure some of Sony's studios could knock it out of the park, I would prefer their own IP over Marvel stuff. Leave that to independent studios who need the work and can deliver.

I imagine Insomiac will be expanding now so they have enough people to do both Spider-Man games and some other games like Ratchet or Oculus VR games. From what I understand, Spider-Man is their biggest game yet and took almost everyone in IG to make it.

I don't know if Sony is particularly interested in funding other Marvel IP, especially considering Square already has Avengers going on. Stuff like Horizon, a completely new IP they have complete control over, did numbers I'd expect the "lower tier" Marvel characters make at their best. Spidey as a solo character is kind of an unique one.
