I really don't get why they won't release it on 3DS. I know the eShop is filled with low quality Unity releases now and thus barely anyone buys indies on the platform, but some gems still slip through and this would definitely be one of them. Wasn't this planned to use a cool 3D gimmick anyway?

I'd hope for a Switch release, but I'm placing bets that like several other Wii U/3DS only devs NOA/NOE rejected them because of Nintendo's irritating paranoia towards curation on the Switch eShop, despite how NCL literally lets anything from a Japanese company onto the store even if it's a disaster. Cosmic Star Heroine went through hell to get on the store because Nintendo was just as irritating to deal with along with HIT's devs getting a dev kit. I don't like how they act like the Switch eShop is an exclusive club despite letting a lot of low quality games on it to begin with and giving Japanese publishers free reign.

I asked this in the last thread and a couple users had positive things to say about it. And it has a "Very Positive" consensus from Steam players. I'm definitely picking it up next week.

Trailer for those interested:

Man, I wish I could get more excited about a game like this...but after The Messenger, I'm feeling a bit burned out on games made in the 80's, that are actually made....now. It's a movement in general I feel has lost it's novelty.

Why not develop games in a modern art style, or would the budget be consequently so much higher? I guess I'd just like to see a game, and take it on its own merit, rather than look at a game, and see it's very direct roots and know there were nostalgic reasons that are tied into it's creation and interest drawing appeal.

*shrugs shoulders*

Anyone played Earthworms? It's 37% off on the US eShop right now. I played some of the demo and it's really intriguing, a really quirky point and click with some odd dialogue, I assume because of the Polish to English translation. Great painting-like backgrounds and music that seems to fit.

It's trippy and weird. Haven't finished it yet, but don't really feel compelled to either, because the puzzle design is weak and it's not the attractive kind of weirdness most of the time.

It's one of the weaker point-and-clicks that I have played on the platform.

Hmm, thanks for the impressions. Maybe I'll hold off. What are the best in your opinion? I've already played Thimbleweed Park and Darkside Detective, both of which I really enjoyed.

The weirdness might resonate with you though. Some people seemed to enjoy it.

My personal picks for p&cs are Broken Age, Darkside Detective (which you've already played), The Journey Down, Goetia, Detention and Inner World 2. Also The Fall 1&2 (great sci-fi story) and Candle for games that have inventory puzzles, but also some light platforming or combat.

These games differ quite a bit in terms of difficulty though and some focus more on puzzles and others on story/characters/setting.

Thanks much. I played Detention as well and that was great. I have The Fall and Goetia, but haven't gotten to those. More choices than I had previously imagined.

Any and all delistings are good to know about ahead of time. Thanks for the heads-up!

But man, what a strange situation with this publisher. Antipole DX was announced over three years ago for the 3DS and Wii U, and then this was just posted by them:

Um... what?

EDIT: Nevermind, this was discussed earlier in the thread.

Also, long time coming, but will finally finally work on getting my indie game out on NA Wii U eShop (Drop It: Block Paradise!) in next few months. Finally got around to work on it again

It's cool knowing that a fellow ResetEra member will be involved with releasing one of the very last Wii U games in America! :)

Does DBFZ give you free SNES game for preordering in America? I thought I remembered that but didn't see anything on the eShop itself?

So as I mentioned in a previous post, I bought a shit ton of ultra cheap games that were on sale over the past month, so I figured I might as well do some real quick impressions on them for anyone interested. I am going to recommend or not recommend based on their sale price because I feel many of these games are not worth their original asking price. I bought all of these for 80%-90% off making most of them cost less then $3 each. I'm using US eShop pricing.

NO THING ($0.49 until 9/20) - Very odd and super basic runner. You just automatically run and turn left and right until the end of the stage. It has 10 stages but the game is hard in an unfair way. I beat 6 levels before giving up. Even at $0.49 I would have a hard time recommending even if you enjoy runners because it's just not very good. Still, it's beyond cheap so I guess you really can't go wrong if you're intrigued by gameplay videos and want to try yourself.

One Strike - (not on sale anymore, currently $4.99) - This is a very basic 2D fighter where one hit is a kill. It's kinda cool but I would only recommend if you have some friends to play in local co-op and when it's on sale for like $0.99. The single-player is bare bones and all the modes are too similar. Whatever you do don't buy this at the full $4.99 price tag.

Astro Bears Party (not on sale anymore, currently $4.99) - Basically a 3D snake with a jumping mechanic. It's devoid of an actual game by yourself so like One Strike only buy if you have people to play local co-op. Would be a great game in a casual party setting since it's quick and very simple to pick up and play. Wait for the $0.99 sale again since all of these games seem like they go on sale on a pretty frequent basis.

Brawl (not on sale anymore, currently $9.99) - A horrid Bomberman clone with a horror premise. It's just bad, and I bought it at $0.99. At $10 it's a joke. Stay far away.

Pirates: All Aboard! (not on sale anymore, currently $5.99) - This felt like more of a tech demo for a mobile game than an actual game. You basically control a pirate ship and battle other ships with an isometric view on a small map. That's it. Another one at $0.99 but the fact they are selling this for $5.99 is practically robbery. Avoid at all costs.

Jumping Joe & Friends (not on sale anymore, currently $4.99) - A vertical jumping mini-game where you see how high you can go and avoid obstacles. Avoid even on sale.

Grid Mania (not on sale anymore, currently $3.99) - This is a very basic 2D puzzle game where you have to align colored balls on the same colored grid. Nothing amazing but if you enjoy puzzlers than you can't really go wrong with this, especially when it goes back on sale. Even the regular asking price is pretty cheap. The only thing disappointing is the game lacks so many basic features for a puzzler. No online leaderboards to compare to anyone and the game doesn't even track stats for your own play making it sorta aimless and pointless to replay once you solve all the puzzles.

Where Are My Friends? (not on sale anymore, currently $5.99) - This is an odd game. The devs tried to put 4 different games into one package (platformer, point and click, runner, metroidvania) but what happened was none of these segments were that much fun and they should have just focused on one of them and made a more polished game. It actually has a really messed up story though when you reach the end. lol

Sparkle 3: Genesis ($0.99 until 9/20) - You control a small micro organism and swim around levels eating things to get bigger. It has quests and a goal and it's a fun time waster for a couple hours.

Sparkle Zero ($1.24 until 9/20) - This is a worse version of the above game. It's the same except in this there's no story or quests. You just eat things to get bigger and then it ends lol. Avoid this one.

Samurai Showdown ($4.79 until 9/19) - Old school Neo Geo fighter. I feel there's way better fighters on the eShop but the sale price was too tempting. It's still a good game and fun if you have people to play with. YMMV by yourself.

Goetia ($2.49 until 9/20) - This one is a toss up. It's a point and click puzzle game where you are a ghost and have to unravel the mystery of what happened to your family and the town you lived in. It looks great and the puzzles are tough but it's hard to recommend because near the end the puzzles got so hard I found myself using a guide more often than not and at that point I realized it was kinda pointless to play if I was going to do that so I never ended up beating it. Still, if you love point and click and/or puzzle games then it's a good download for the sale price of $2.49.

Qbik ($0.99 until 9/20) - A simple 2D platforming puzzle game where your character makes his way through mazes where you have to eat all the gold blocks in a level to progress. I enjoyed what I played so far and it seems like it has a lot of content. A big downside of the Switch version is there's no online level editor so you can't play other people's creations like the PC version which kinda sucks. Still, for $0.99 I would recommend.

Mutant Mudds Collection ($7.49 until 9/25) - A neat 2D platformer that's been around for awhile but recommended if you never played before and enjoy platformers. 2 games in one and has a bonus puzzle game with online leaderboards. You can probably get 20-30 hours worth of content here if you go for 100%.

Xeodrifter ($4.99 until 9/25) - Very basic metroidvania from the same devs as Mutant Mudds. Game is only about 3 hours long but it's fun while it lasts. Still, not sure I can recommend at $4.99 unless you're super into metroidvania's and want a simple game to chill out to.

VSR: Void Space Racing (not on sale anymore, currently $9.99) - This is a cool space racer that had a lot of potential if the devs put more work into it. As it stands it's just too basic and devoid of features to recommend, especially at the full asking price of $10. It has 3 racers and 8 tracks. You can either race AI on easy, normal, or hard or do time trials. There's also 2P local play. The online leaderboards for me were extremely buggy. I did all 8 tracks and the game only recorded like 2 of my playtimes for the leaderboards. If this game had more spaceships with varying stats, more tracks, and online play it would have been a sleeper hit for indie racers, it's a shame it's so undercooked.

INK (not on sale anymore, currently $8.99) - I've only played an hour so far but I'm enjoying this platformer where you ink your surroundings to fill out the level and make it towards the goal to proceed. The controls are kinda iffy and can make you overjump some things which can be frustrating but the escalating challenges seem well paced. I would recommend if you like these types of platformers akin to Super Meat Boy.

It's unfortunate because the Nintendo versions of Antipole DX are all 100% finished. But now, none of the Nintendo versions will ever be released.

If I had to predict, I'm assuming now they will just focus on releasing the game for PS4, PS Vita, Xbox One, and PC.

I feel bad for the devs, but geeze, you'd have to think there is some other way around this. NOA needs to get their heads outta their rears

Also I highly recommend any one never saying never. Who knows what can happen, see other devs, and the other part of advice is if some method doesn't seem to be working try a different tact. Hoping that is the case here, but it isn't so obvious to a lot of people. It gets said a lot but very few people actually practice it.

This seems absolutely ridiculous, as this game has been in development for years on Nintendo systems and I can't imagine they weren't approved for release by NoA many years ago.

Edit - oh wow, I didn't realize they were removing all of their previous games from the various eShops as well. I'd be surprised if they're being forced to remove them, so there must be some real anger towards Nintendo going on here and their games are being delisted as a result of that. The previous sentence is of course my personal speculation.

That's absolutely fucking atrocious. Fucking horrible that Nintendo is treating the Switch eShop like an elitist club for anyone who isn't Japanese (since every publisher there can launch a game on the Switch eShop with no issues, I assume because it's harder to start a company in Japan than over here, knowing old publishing) and since CSH, a pretty outstanding game suffered for the same reason, you can't say it's because they have to protect the eShop from shovelware devs like Skunk Software. Being paranoid towards anyone who hasn't made a big AAA game or who released a few games on Wii U/3DS is not the right way to handle things. We need to make some noise and convince NOA to approve the game for crying out loud.

Thanks for taking the effort to share your thoughts on these games.

Of the ones I've tried in your list, I agree with you on Astro Bears Party, Brawl, Grid Mania, Qbik, and Mutant Mudds and Xeodrifter I played on 3DS and enjoyed those versions. However there are two that I completely disagree with (just my opinion):

No Thing is definitely an acquired taste and some of those stages are absolutely brutal, without a doubt one of the toughest games I've ever finished. But the great music, bizarre narration, and psychedelic aesthetic are unforgettable and as a result I consider this a must-play budget eShop gem. It's on sale for a dollar or less frequently, but honestly it's totally worth the regular $2 asking price and then some.

I just started Jumping Joe & Friends, and like No Thing the controls and gameplay are about as straightforward as they come, which helps with how addictive it is. What little is there is done very well and you have the benefit of snappy button inputs that the smartphone version can't give you. There are multiple modes including one with 4-player support, and different playable characters with unique abilities that can also be leveled up with in-game currency, which fuels the brunt of the game's replayability. For only a dollar, this is a surprisingly solid little arcade climber.

The Boat, you completely missed it here and are definitely jumping to a lot of conclusions. It has been pretty well known that Nintendo was/is being picky with letting people publish to the eshop, but it is nothing like you describe. No one but Zeboyd knows the real reason why they kept being turned away, but the minute Limited Run games got involved it went quick. Pretty sure they are neither big AAA or have release Wii U / 3DS games. In fact I'd say having released on the WiiU or 3ds is in no way to your advantage.

Yes there are a lot of problems still with getting games on the eshop. No you aren't even remotely close to the actual story. Recommend you go do some reading on it. I'd even argue that they have relaxed their standards quite considerably and allowed even more then earlier. In fact a lot of talk has been that they have severely relaxed on the curation. So we have no clue what happened with this Developer and Game, but it is clear they have soured.

I'm still fairly certain getting rejected is the exact cause, and it's not a jump to conclusion since it's not that hard to figure out. Zeboyd flat out said last year that Nintendo wouldn't accept their game or let them develop a port, but in the end LRG was able to do so since they did all the porting and they were already a Switch eShop publisher with a dev kit (I assume to port Saturday Morning RPG and also their physical games) making it a non-issue. While I think the "no ports" rule that was apparently in place last year has indeed lifted, opening the floodgates, I also think that their stinginess with certain publishers lingers and is an undeniable issue. Considering how you hear about little issue from Japanese publishers and how some indies like Ratalaika had to specifically go through a Japanese publisher to put out Plantera DX before Nintendo would approve the release of it. The same happened to Axiom Verge's dev and they almost went with a Japanese publisher because of how they could put it out on that store with no issues if they found a porter/publisher over there until it got approved

So yes, the Switch eShop opened up a bit earlier this year, but it's nowhere close to the 100% openness of the Wii U/3DS eShop. The one thing I'm fairly certain of 100% is that the removal isn't sparked by Nintendo. On the other hand, I know Nintendo would easily allow it on the 3DS/Wii U, so there's little reason as to why those versions aren't launching. Maybe it's wild speculation, but having covered tons of indie games in the past and also being quite excited for this one in particular, (I'll gladly buy it on PS4) I never like seeing a dev with great potential get rejected. It's one thing to not want to release a game on a Nintendo platform because you simply don't have time for it or it's not the right platform for a project, but to want to launch a game so badly, only to get rejected by Nintendo when it's 100% completed just feels wrong.

I mean, we also know that RCMADIAX has been outright rejected for future titles on the eShop as well, and he's removing his games from the Wii U/3DS stores in a few months due to low sales and still not being approved, so it's not like the Antipole dev is the only dev still having trouble getting on the Switch eShop (Despite RCMADIAX having a much, much worse track record despite a good start as the first Web Framework dev)

So I got that new surgery game and the controls aren't clicking for me as I can't seem to do much of anything. Man I was really intrigued by the premise too because I love dark humor.

This seems absolutely ridiculous, as this game has been in development for years on Nintendo systems and I can't imagine they weren't approved for release by NoA many years ago.

I'm not really allowed to say, but the situation is really bizarre when you think about it.

In September 2016, Nintendo was aggressively promoting both versions of Antipole DX during their "Nindies Summer Jam". So Nintendo must have been confident enough in Antipole's quality to promote it alongside indie gems like: Hollow Knight, Steamworld Heist, Runbow, Stardew Valley, Axiom Verge, etc.

Nindies Summer Jam Trailer from August 2016 (featuring Antipole DX):

And then in 2017, Saturnine said they wanted to bring Antipole DX to Switch, but they were waiting on Nintendo for the "OK".

Thanks Emily. This situation is really unfortunate.

I mean, we also know that RCMADIAX has been outright rejected for future titles on the eShop as well, and he's removing his games from the Wii U/3DS stores in a few months due to low sales and still not being approved, so it's not like the Antipole dev is the only dev still having trouble getting on the Switch eShop (Despite RCMADIAX having a much, much worse track record)

Is there a source on the bolded? Given how often his, um, wares go on sale I wouldn't be surprised but...

Yeah, while I heard about the game before the showcase due to me enjoying Turtle Tale a decent amount and following the dev on Twitter, (Though looking back I was a bit too generous to it, it's very basic although a nice game to spend an afternoon on) that Summer Jam video was when a lot of other people I knew first heard about the game. I still thought about it from time to time and just assumed it was taking a while longer to develop since every game needs polish. Very sad that something seems to have fallen thorough, but don't feel ashamed about sharing this bit. I think if it is indeed because of Nintendo rejecting the game, maybe fan feedback could lead to them reversing their decision or at least having a publisher come to help out the developer, so I hope. I'll look forward to the game either way.

Yeah, he mentioned a while ago he was planning to delist his titles in the future, but deleted that tweet chain due to people getting after him since some people were jerks to him (Although knowing that his early games WERE good and enjoyable puzzlers, I can't help but feel bad for the guy considering the reason his other games dipped in quality, was because he made Spikey Walls as a gag for Miiverse only for that to outsell his other products and cause him to pretty much give up on spending as much dev time... Which is really sad since his games became shovelware at that point despite an excellent start.) This is the only one I could find remaining but he still plans on removing them IIRC.

I'm like doing the opposite. 4 years later, finally releasing my damn Wii U game (well, 1/2 done, got released in EU already, now doing NA).

Funny enough, all my work lately is removing stuff from the game. Miiverse (which doesn't work anymore, but renamed as Achievements) and the Level Editor & Online mode (which noone used from EU + more importantly, kept crashing and the reason it got delayed so long. I'll def put it back once I get it out in future releases). So going to go for a $2.99 price. With Wii U being Wii U, not sure about sale ideas. But, I'm sure it will see better than the EU version which was ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ lol

So I bought Final Fantasy XV. I don't like JRPGs, and haven't enjoyed one since FF7 in over 20 years. Something about the bro-friendship story of FFXV appealed to me despite the overly-anime style, so I always wanted to pick it up on PS4, but never did. When this super deformed new art version came out, I have NO idea why I decided to jump on it. Maybe it was the price. Maybe because I associate Nintendo and JRPGs with a cartoonish look from yesteryear. Whatever, it worked enough for me to go against my sensibilities to buy it...

And it's pretty good. For 18 bucks on sale, this game was a great purchase. Guess I'll have to get that City Skyline game NEXT time ;)

That's great, I went ahead and got it too, haven't had a chance to dive in, but it was settled when my wife came over and thought it looked cool, so we looked at regular FFXV and she said she would definitely play the non-douchey looking one. So pocket edition here we are. It doesn't take much to sway me.

I agree on No Thing. It's one of the more memorable titles in his list.

I actually like some of the (pseudo-)8/16 bit art styles a lot of indie games adopt, but a lot of the popular ones are pretty mediocre in my opinion. I stopped playing The Messenger because it was way too easy and the level design was boring, and I felt the same way about Shovel Knight, though I did bother to beat that one. For me personally, if devs are going to appeal to nostalgia, their games need to be tightly designed and challenging like their inspirations. I don't have the patience for easy games anymore. I think that Alwa's Awakening is better than The Messenger and SK, for what it's worth. Mega Man 9, while kinda old at this point, is the "new retro" game done right. The recent Bloodstained: CotM is pretty great too -- the first two runs are pretty easy but the latter two runs are a great challenge.

Man, this game is so much better than it has any right to be. One of the better Metroidvanias on a system that's absolutely full of them.

I thought the Mummy Demastered was OK, but the game having performance issues was utterly inexcusable. I don't know if it ever got improved but it felt like every 10 seconds it would go from chugging to not chugging for no apparent reason at all.

Nice write up, I will try to so the same for some games I've played lately when I get time.

Kind of surprised Labyrinth of Refrain is getting pretty decent reviews so far on both Switch and PS4. I enjoy dungeon crawlers so I'm tempted. However Valkyria Chronicles 4 is soon as well. Hmmm
