And made before the UK charts ever dropped

At some point, people will finally realize my track record and stop doubting it lol

Who even are you?!
My sales insider source said Spiderman will sell next to nothing because he counted the explosions from a trailer!Probably insomniac bought all the copies to fake the numbers!
Tomb Raider obviously sold 3000% Digital because people couldn't wait to play it and didn't want to take the chance that their shop already sold all the physical copies!

/s

Its still weird people trying to spin that the exclusive Deal for the last game didn't have a negative impact something everyone back then could have predicted.

People realize that we are talking about fuckin Spiderman with a marvel logo slapped on it ? It's not because is an esclusive (and being basically one of the most recognized worldwide superhero it could just sell x2 or x3 more if wasnt but that is completely another story) it's not just and only because the game have good reviews (the game look and play great !!!) unlike TR.
Most of it is because is spidy....
TR having an hard time because fight against Spiderman? Was easy to imagine this lot months before they arrived on the market

So why is Spidey outperforming Batman Arkham Knight? Why did the latter Activision games do so poorly?

Oh that's right; because you don't actually want to discuss this - you're more concerned with hand-waving Spider-Man's success.

So pray tell what happened to:

- Spider-Man PS1/N64
- Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions
- Spider-Man: Web of Shadows
- Spider-Man 2
- Ultimate Spider-Man
- etc

Because they sure didn't light up the sales charts.

Has every Spider-man game before the new one had this much hype and momentum before? The brand is but one bullet-point:

- Insomniac is one of the most respected in the industry. It's like a Naughty dog or Rockstar game, it's gonna inspire a heightened level of attention because lots of gamers are fans of those developers
- Exclusive to Sony means built from the ground-up to take advantage of the PS4, and it's on a platform with a circa 80m install base
- Marvel/MCU is HOT right now, which further fuels the hype. This is the first time we've gotten a new Spider-man game since the character has come(back) into the spotlight with Civil War, Homecoming, and Infinity War.
- We have the hardware capabilities to do the character more justice than ever before.

If it was just another Spider-man multiplat game by Activision in the Shattered Dimensions/Edge of Time vein, it wouldn't be getting nearly this much love. It would be like 'cool, another Spider-man game'. Clearly this is something more.

I mean, even though it was multiplat, I'm sure the Arkham games benefited from running concurrently with the Bale Batman movies.

/s in the end just takes away all the fun from shitposting

Old Lara was and had:

-Disowned by her family for following her dreams but didn't let it get to her
-Got all her riches on her own
-Never once complained about Tomb Raiding or adventures
-Strong and fearsome to her enemies
-Had a much adventurous and stronger personality

Compared to this Lara she was much better than this one. All this Lara is doing is just following her parents lagecy and expectations, complaining and whining all the time. The only thing she has over old Lara is her more realistic look but apart from that she is a really bad character and not someone anyone can look up to (unlike old Lara who was loved by most women I know).
I don't particularly disagree with you on those points about her personality, she was a strong-willed woman for sure and I don't like the new Lara's personality either. But you can't separate that from her design and treatment in the games, and it taints what could be a much better character.
Hopefully, moving forward, now that the origin story is done, future Tomb Raider games can feature a Lara that closely resembles the old one in personality.

I still find it so crazy that the finale to Crystal Dynamics' trilogy was outsourced to Eidos Montreal.

I know they're a talented team but it just feels wrong. Shouldn't the studio that started it be the one ending the trilogy?
Yeah, Avengers became Square's priority. Too big of an IP not to. Plus, I think they're trying to be more efficient with budget, so Tomb Raider was a better fit for Canada instead of Redwood City. I was a bit worried at first, but clearly they did a great job.

I agree with you on her looks.

The one thing I can give the new Lara points on is her less sexualized looks which is why I am deeply disappointed in everything else.

Oh yeah. I can't wait to play it. I'm sure they did great. I'm just Crystal Dynamics didn't stick with their own series. Could you imagine if Uncharted 3 was made by a different dev.

GTA V was released in September [and it sold 11M in its first 24hrs worldwide].
Yes, it was funny because just after asking that question I saw the thread on GTA V's fifth anniversary, and then I thought: "well, nothing's going to beat THAT".

Anyway, I still remain expectant. For an exclusive game, numbers aim to be impressive.

Apparently Crystal provided guidance, but it's been said that this is an Eidos Montreal title at its core. Maybe they didn't have a choice either, it's Square Enix calling the shots here, most likely. Frankly, maybe it was for the best. Despite the usual issues with the reboot games still being present in Shadow, I think the liberties Eidos took were very much welcome.

That's awesome to hear. I won't get it anytime soon but I have a feeling this will be a great game to get on sale in 2019.

Well, curious example, given that it was made by a different Naughty Dog team than U2 and TLOU (but with the same director as in 1 and 2)

Since some of you are saying that these numbers are meaningless without digital. It's not as if we don't have the industry average for digital ratio - something like Tomb Raider is not going to be an outlier, given that it doesn't have a major MP or co-op component. If we peg it at 15% ( 2013 ), 25% ( 2015 ) and 50% ( 2018 ) respectively -

This is how the sales look like:

TL34E2w.jpg

It's not that flattering of a picture. At best, you could say that it managed to hold onto ROTR's sales at a per platform perspective, but it's definitely a decline from how TR2013 performed, and considering factors like install base growth now vs 2015, and other factors, the IP has stagnated.

Yep at the price these games taking to make having the IP stagnate and low ASP not good.

Whatever gives you that idea? It's not like Core had any issues porting Fighting Force to the N64.

We know an N64 version of TR1 was planned. But it disappeared right around the time Sony gained exclusivity. Tomb Raider used Red Book for all music and dialogue. That's why the game is so bloated. Tomb Raider for the N-Gage is 8MB. Fighting Force for the N64 was 16MB. Eidos could have easily afforded a decent N64 port of the game, and it would have sold decently.

Well, of course TR1 was 'planned' until it was deemed to be unworkable on n64 and a pain in the arse to develop TR2 for Saturn which was already dying on its arse. TR1 becoming a phenomenon on PS1 3 months after it was released on Saturn sealed it.

There's plenty of scans from that time to go back and have a look. I remember C&VG (and many others, I devoured pretty much every videogame magazine at that time) having a feature on why they weren't coming, and it wasn't the Sony money hat

So, is it the end of the reboot series? Not even asking because of the sales, but I see it being market as the end of the reboot trilogy. So... they are going to make new ones or keep it low until another reboot?

End of "origin story" trilogy.

New ones ( the current plan ) will continue her story, but will be a new saga/chapter in her life. Like how Halo 4 continued the story of Master Chief even though the trilogy of Halo 1-3 ended.

I think this is the end of the 2013 triology. Nothing about sales, but this could or will impact the future of the franchise.
So, the next if will happen, not gonna have any boat from the 2013, Rise and Shadow, so could be a new reboot (reboot of a reboot) or a back to the root.

Well I know I'm certainly waiting on TR coming to GP tbh. I'll pick it up one way or another eventually as I've enjoyed the other 2 but full price and against Spidey and DQ and VC and RDR and... well you get the point. Too much out at the same time and the games I really want take presidence over game I kind of want.

I don't think this had anything to do with the 1 year exclusivity of the second game. There's been plenty of time to play the PS4 version. I for one, would pick Spidey over Tomb Raider any day of the week. Plain and simple.

Don't you work on the States? Scary that you're predicting stuff correctly over EU :p Maybe the markets are very alike.

UK and US markets are very similar. They each have their own things that make them unique of course but by and large if one thing is true in the US gaming market it's true of the UK market and vice versa

Notable exceptions? I'm thinking games like Madden, but curious if you've noticed anything less obvious. :)

I know Square Enix won't let them but Tomb Raider really should just be a linear ~15 hour globe trotting adventure with no loot or crafting or hubs

The vast majority of physical buyers are casual gamers or people who trade games in. Or those people who purchase collectors editions.

Most gamers will only buy a few games a year and it only a few weeks till people's perfered franchises. Tomb Raider isn't relevant anymore to younger gamers. I was considering buying a PS4 but only for the exclusive titles and bet a few other people are similar. Especially if you enjoy single player games.

When I was working in a independent games store 20 years ago, the vast majority of people traded games in, apart from certain titles and I would of thought it would be similar today, unless you know a game will last you for ages. Out of interest what would swapping Spider-Man for Tomb Raider cost these days in the UK or other fairly recent games?

Square Enix made a terrible mistake by agreeing to an Xbox exclusive with Rise. The series hasn't recovered since then. I've finished Shadow and even though it wasn't a great game like Uncharted 4 it still deserves better sales.

Every once in a while theres a random fluke. SIEGE for example launched pretty soft in the UK while doing around 1 million opening NPD in the US with digital

But yeah it's rare to see a difference like that. Usually the 2 markets are about as similar as 2 different countries could be

Hopefully, moving forward, now that the origin story is done, future Tomb Raider games can feature a Lara that closely resembles the old one in personality.

i don't know how they can. not without effectively pretending the origin trilogy didn't happen (ie. full reboot). people don't go from hardened damaged rambo killers and suddenly turn into plucky sarcastic adventurers. it would be like uncharted 1-3 being super serious, super violent murder sims and then uncharted 4 being the drake we know, it wouldn't work. at the very least they'd need another load of games to show that transitional character change, but that sounds like a bad idea to me and wouldn't have much of a payoff.

her character should have swayed more towards the classic personality after the first game, potentially with a time jump to allow for her to be more seasoned as an adventurer and someone who has learned to love what she does after the events she endured in the first game. instead they just double downed on the direction they were going, and this third game has done it again. these 3 games have essentially locked in her character now. i don't see how square enix can make her likable while keeping this trilogy canon?

We are running in circles with this. In this thread alone, I feel like this has been discussed several times. It's not even the quality of the games that seems to be the biggest detriment to the sales anyway. But regardless, why can't this iteration of Lara be a flawed person? I don't understand what's the obsession of holding her to some cartoony standard of being a borderline superhero, when she's clearly part of a different canon. You and others like it less. Thats OK, but lets not forget that the reason why the reboot exists is because the classic TR formula got worn down and sales collapsed.

I for one like the new Lara best, more realistic.

I also liked Rise less than the 2013 one.

I bought Shadow because I wasn't planning on getting Spiderman, supers are not my thing...but I got a great deal and I said why not.

Spiderman turned out much better than I thought it would be though, so I still have to take Shadow out of the box lol

PS1 Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 sold REALLY WELL back in the day.

Spider-Man was the 46th best selling game on the PS1 and shifted 1.8m copies.

That is not including the game boy version. It was so popular that it was later ported to the N64/Dreamcast and Windows.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_PlayStation_video_games

Spider-Man 2 around the time when lisenced game had become synonymous with trash? It and least sold MILLIONS of copies

In the United States, the game's Game Boy Advance version alone sold 600,000 copies and earned $17 million by August 2006. During the period between January 2000 and August 2006, it was the 47th highest-selling game launched for the Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS or PlayStation Portable in that country.[77] The game's PlayStation 2 version received a "Platinum" sales award from the Entertainment and Leisure Software Publishers Association (ELSPA),[78]indicating sales of at least 300,000 copies in the United Kingdom.[79]

In TR case, Eidos was already involved in the game since the first one and the series game director move to Eidos to work in Shadow.

There are probably many different factors involved in the stagnation of the series, and of course the previous exclusivity deal is a part of that, but I have a feeling that this is more related to the games themselves. I loved the reboot and Rise from a gameplay standpoint (as in, the games are fun to play), but Lara herself is miserable. I have talked to some friends of mine who love the franchise, and while they jumped in right away when Rise was released on PC/PS4, this time around they're all saying they will probably wait, because the premise sounds like everything they disliked about Lara in the previous games amplified to a whole new level.

You need some humor, some heart to break the tension. Uncharted does this very well, even The Last of Us has sillier moments. This Lara, though, feels so miserable. Whenever she stops at a campfire, she lets you know how bad she feels. There is no humor, no break. She is either complaining or killing.

The old portrayal of the character was oversexualized, and this depiction is way better in that regard. But she was also much more compelling as a character, and funnier too.
