I didn't quite understand the point of Bill Duke's character.
He's in one scene of the movie, is holding a crossbow for Nic Cage for some reason, and basically just sits there. All he really does is give some vague clues about the cult and their whereabouts, but I feel like that could have been conveyed some other way.

Unless there were more scenes with the character that got cut.

Just felt he was part of the world-building, like maybe he's just some old survivalist guy that Cage knew that was living "off the grid" and was putting together a weapons cache for some doomsday scenario, and Cage's character happened to gain his trust at some point.

I suspect Cage was one of those types who did some shit in his past. I also think he might have been a recovering alcoholic with how he turned down the beer in the very beginning and how he had a bottle of vodka hidden in a random drawer in the bathroom.

Just saw this tonight, holy shit what a film

As was mentioned, Bill Duke is barely in this movie. I think his entire scene could have been cut/changed tbh.

Cage, the actor? Or the actual character

Watched it on demand and holy shit. It's actually playing at a theater about 30 minutes away so I'm going this week to see it again.

What a movie.

Thats the amazing thing about this film, I've found. A lot of show don't tell aspects about the leads on this film.

I took him simply as a hunter friend, nothing nefarious about the crossbow. Duke was surprised when Cage revealed he was using it to hunt men. I'm assuming he's holding it due to Mandys love of animals and Cage giving up 'that life'.

In also dug the Duke scene since Duke is cool as fuck and it allowed Cage to express himself outside of acts of violence.

Anyone who has never taken acid should know this movie does an amazingly good job of recreating many elements of a good trip.

A good trip? :P It had moments where I felt Cosmatos really nailed some visual distortions/changes I've experienced on trips but I wish they did more with it in subtle nuances like what was on display in Annihilation, which was a damn masterclass in the visual language of psychedelics. But for an elevated grindhouse flick, it was very cool.

This movie was not subtle in any manner whatsoever. The garish visuals fit the movie perfectly.

Oh thank god, they're showing a reel of the "best" Nicholas Cage moments before this showing of Mandy.

I saw it this weekend in a theater. Was pretty disappointed. It was so much slower than I thought it would be. It could have been a 30 minute short. And while Cage was fun he wasn't "good". All the reviews made this sound like some award winning performance. It was just a standard silly type performance from Cage.

I understand where you're coming from but I think the reason it works so well here is because it's a silly performance from him this actually suited to the material. If you want to see a genuinely good performance I would recommend Joe.

I agree it suited the material. It was just unexpected after all the gushing reviews. But I still think it was way too long. I kept waiting and waiting for it to pick up and go crazy and it never did. It was a show burn even once the revenge stuff started. Very weird pacing.

If you watched this and thought it never "went crazy", well that's certainly something lmao. Unique perspective you have on film there. This was literally the most insane movie I've ever seen in theatres.

Just got out, I was blown away. Stephen O'Malley's guitar work was sublime and the perfect fit. I need to watch this again.

Watched it yesterday with the wife while having some drinks and we had a blast.

Everytime Nic Cage shouted or made a crazy face we were cheering and laughing like idiots.

I would totally recommend it if you just want to have a great time watching a movie, just don't take it seriously.

Another severe mindfuck brought to you by Panos Cosmatos. Cage was delightfully unrestrained and Andrea Riseborough was fantastic. The synthwave soundtrack and neon acid-trip visual aesthetic were perfect. Can't wait to grab the blu ray.

This was a bad, bad film. Not even ''so bad it's good", just slow, plodding, terrible acting from everyone involved, and lacking not only a plot but any kind of cohesive structure. Seriously people hyping this garbage should be embarrassed

This was such a mesmerizing movie, it was honestly pretty mind blowing. This will definitely end up being one of my favorite films of the year.

I want to watch it, but I am not finding a place to do it. Does anyone know if any non-us place that has it to watch it online?

I can't get this film out of my head. Everything about it is custom made for me. I want posters, I want action figures and I want a replica axe. I'm at work listening to the soundtrack. I can't wait to see it again at the cinema next month.

You should all read this interview with Panos – apparently he originally wanted Cage to play Jeremiah and wrote the character around him. But Cage wanted to play Red and they actually parted ways for a little bit because of it.

Also gives you the origin of Cheddar Goblin.

I don't love the film but that Goblin spot was amazing.
The film might be one of those cases where, seeing it at a festival without any prior knowledge, would have probably blown me away.
With the hype train and my not so big TV, it was harder to live up to that.

I loved the visual style and music. There were some great little moments, but man was this disappointing. Just felt overlong and slooooow. Those demon bikers felt like Cenobite rejects by way of the Plague from Hobo with a Shotgun. Cage did 'vengeance against a satanic sex cult' way better in Drive Angry. I feel like I'm missing something with all the high praise from this site. Tons of other films have been over hyped up and down the last few years, so I think this is another one of those for me.

Saved up some extra potent herb for the ride, too.

I agree with this as well. Feels like the Rocky Horror effect where seeing it with an in-tune crowd really elevates the experience.

It's a heavy metal tone poem, an arthouse movie through and through. People will hate it on that alone. People who like that kind of stuff will love it. Hell most of the reviews make this point.

I thought the movie was awesome. I loved the style, the soundtrack and Cage being his most Cage. I can't wait for the Blu-ray release and I hope there's a director commentary.

I was just disappointed that there were no supernatural demons. The bike cenobites where just drug users. And the rest were just Christian nut cases.
