I'm sticking to my guns

Geno is the Square Enix rep.

Keep Isabelle aside, direct writing aside, let's have a heart to heart about Sakurai.

He's been pitching this as an ultimate fanservice game. Yeah, Geno's fanbase is mostly for the sake of him being in Smash. But a lot of this game's picks feel designed for fanservice. Hell, everybody is here is the concept. And the Geno outfit in sm4sh proves that the idea has been cleared to some extent by Square - enough that it's theoretically plausible.

If we have 5 stages left, my guesses are

  • Rhythm Heaven (I've long argued that this is a franchise that might be best represented by a stage rather than a playable character, right now I think this is more possible than ever)
  • Minecraft (It's been rumored, it would make a lot of sense)
  • Alola (I'm a little bit split on this because I don't think Pokémon needs a new stage, but it's the only realistic choice I see left)
  • Hollow Bastion (Supposing that Sora is in the game, I think this would realistically be the more impressionable stage to go with)
  • Monster Hunter...? (I'm really at a loss for this one because I assumed the field in the Direct was just from an adventure mode, but just like the flat version of Dracula's Castle it seems like it has to be based on something)

I could see the DQ rep being DLC to help cover licensing deals (and just being a huge draw like Ryu and Cloud were) and like mentioned with Sora, maybe there's some kind of complication with crediting Armor Project/Bird Studio/Sugiyama on the box.

I hope not though, I'd love them to be all together.

KH1 Sora, have the rest be costumes

So long as the Dream Drop Distance outfit is in I'm good with it (I haaate the KH1 design after I imagined it without the jacket)

I guess they should use archived Haley Joel Osment voice clips though

Hollow Bastion (Supposing that Sora is in the game, I think this would realistically be the more impressionable stage to go with)

I'd personally go with Traverse Town because it helps capture that Disney feel pretty well. That, and it'd give them an excuse to add TWEWY music.

It's bumming me out that the most likely indie stage/character and the most likely Square Enix JRPG IP to be represented are both associated with genuinely terrible people in major roles.

So here comes the five new stages challenging the box theory. I'd expect:
- Minecraft stage (as per Vergeben rumours)
- Forest Maze (Geno)
- Alola (Incineroar)
- that MH stage
- another Street Fighter stage ?

At least now it means that the likes of Isaac, Elma, or Sora have real chances again.
With so few new stages I doubt they'd give the Mario series two new ones.

So knowing that all revealed characters were heavily hinted by leaks, do you know what are the remaining leaked characters from the most trustworthy sources?

If there are 5 more stages the box theory almost has to be wrong or Incineroar isn't the final newcomer. If all 5 stages are returning ip it makes no sense to have not revealed them already especially when we had confirmation "all stages will be unlocked from the start"

Richter, Daisy, Chrom, K Rool, and Dark Samus don't fit this description.
Richter, Daisy, Chrom and Dark Samus are Echo Fighters, so they weren't necessarily decided from the beginning, maybe Sakurai added them during the development cycle or a later game planning document. This means that they are easier to keep as a secret. And about KRool... there's always speculation about him, I don't know if some leaker said anything about him tbh.

Maybe some stages (Orbital Gate Assault or the DKCR Kongo Jungle) were not ready to show by the last Direct? I'll be really surprised if there's no Alola stage, XCX stage or TW101 stage in the game.

I don;t see there being a Wonderful 101 stage. It would need to be have a bigger scale than Orbital Gate Assault to be done justice, and we all know how long it took the Smash 4 team to make that stage.

Nah, I think they were in the project plan. I don't think Richter was initally in the plan though

Yeah, but it makes sense, it was an exclusive game for the WiiU with tons of great ideas for a unique stage (my dream will be the Double-headed Snake/Sword Dinosaur fight while flying in the VV). If this Smash was more "conventional" this kind of stage would be a lock.

niche low-selling games are the farthest thing from a lock when it comes to Smash representation

I will be extremely surprised if there is a Wonderful 101 stage in the game
IMO the bad side of "everything is here" is that it will take preference over representing new games via stages/newcomers.

The fact that we have 1 new stage from a really recent game (Odyssey), another new stage from a cross-platform game (Zelda BotW) makes me think that Nintendo wanted to have at least some representation of Switch games in Ultimate, but maybe the WiiU will end up underrepresented (DKC: TF, TW101, XCX, Captain Toad)... As I've said I expect a stagre from at least 3 of these 4 games, but I'm prepared to be disappointed.

I wouldn't be surprised if Incineroar is announced during an October Pokémon Direct (Let's Go, Pokken, spin-offs) and he fights Ken in that
Apart from Richter, who was an echo of the character just announced, all echoes have been shown outside of trailers. So unless you think Ken is unique/semi clone, I doubt he'd be in Incineroar's trailer. Now if you predicted Glass Joe, as a semi clone of Little Mac, being Incineroar's opponent I would have backed this 100%!

It's very rarely that a fighter is not decided in the project plan, with exceptions like Sonic in Brawl. Pretty sure Echo fighters became a thing during that plan.

Some of Simon's moves are based on Richter's games. And Sakurai even made that statement of being unsure which one would actually be the echo fighter.

Well, at least the stage leak will keep this thread interesting over people just being depressed over only 2 remaining characters.

I think CoroCoro's page is just a mistake. They're just recapping information from the Direct, but randomly reveal that there are 108 stages without even acknowledging that previously it was said there were only 103?

Richter, Daisy, Chrom and Dark Samus are Echo Fighters, so they weren't necessarily decided from the beginning, maybe Sakurai added them during the development cycle or a later game planning document. loz18 was the one pushing him, even saying he'd appear in some trailer with an hero vs villain theme, but that was pretty much the only thing about the Direct he got right.

I kind of hope Sakurai added more Echoes at the last minute after the good reception to their reveal. It's definitely doable considering how they take even less resources than Melee's clones.

I think that DLC will include Echoes as "bonus content". For example, you buy Rex/Pyra+Mor Ardain stage, and it includes 2 unrelated Echoes.

So since that Isabelle bet was so good let's try it again. Edit: the loosing team must wear an avatar for 2 weeks (nothing NSFW or lewd)

Who wants to be in a community wide bet on the amount of characters.

Team 2

Team more than 2

Team no more characters

I know which side I'm on, but before we start, shouldn't we have a penalty avatar for whichever team loses, along with a duration?

Ancient news by now, but I'm assuming CoroCoro's stage count is a simple mistake. They only reported on the 8/8 Direct and nothing more, it makes no sense that if they did have future info the only thing to get out is a number.

Could there be more than 103 stages? Sure, but I wouldn't be surprised if the game ships with that number.

Always remember that we are definitely getting DLC. Spring Man, Rex and Pyra, Isaac... it's always darkest before the dawn!

I'm honestly surprised we haven't seen any Pushmo content. Mallo has a trophy in 4, you'd think at least a Pushmo stage would be a shoe-in.

Whichis completely false.
The box theory is like when people thought there was only 4 worlds in Mario Odyssey lol.

Last Shulk. "So it might be Geno"

Lol that doesn't make any sense.
Elma would have worked in your sentence.

And little hint : Geno is NOT locked.
Nor is anyone else.

I'm referring more to the point that Shulk is not necessarily a "megaton" announcement, ie they'd want (presumably) their last reveal to be a big one.

Hence, if Shulk was the last added fighter before the game released—clearly not a super well-known character—it's plausible, then, that the last fighter reveal could be someone as underwhelming as Shulk—in this case Geno.

I appreciate the opportunity to clarify. Hope that helps!

The problem with comparing this Smash's reveals vs the reveals of prior games is that there are no hidden characters this time round.

Previous games had characters like Mr G&W, ROB (technically Wolf is the final one, but ROB was significant, story wise, in SSE) and Duck Hunt as secret characters, which is likely what people are talking about when they discuss the possible final reveal.
