Who's more popular: Isabelle or Waluigi (aka help settle a stupid debate)

He is maybe not known by name, but many probably recognize him from Mario Kart, which has a huge reach extending far wider than simply the number of players who purchase it (which is already ridiculously high).

Isabelle obviously has a more passionate fanbase due to being an actual major character.

Isabelle is for sure bigger than all newcomers so far other than Inklings however, probably bigger than K. Rool, Simon, Richter, and Ridley combined.

I mean Waluigi is less important but he is from a bigger IP. That being said Animal crossing still huge and Isabelle actually has been well realized so even if more people have laid eyeballs on waligui Id say she is more popular.

Really do believe in Waluigis potential to be incredible some day though, I find him charming

Waluigi is a filler character that got pushed into meme status over a smash bros fan comic series from 2011.

Isabelle is the face of animal crossing.

Isabelle obviously, she's actually promoted by Nintendo, you can see her in train ads in Japan, was with Mario and Zelda characters in a financial report talking about their most popular characters/IPs, was one of the characters in the New 3DS commercial, etc. Being a meme with western adult gamers doesn't make a secondary Mario character more popular than her as much as the bubble here may think (I mean, this forum thinks Animal Crossing isn't a big franchise).

Isabelle is a Nintendo A-tier character.

I'm going to say Isabelle. Nintendo has used her in a ton of marketing. I'm guessing they have the data to back up those choices.

If you asked a 100 people on the street, more people would recognize Walugi.

He's a side character in a lot of really popular games: Mario Party, Kart, Tennis. He's more recognizable at least in North America. Animal Crossing is a big game that I've heart a lot about (but never played) and I only heard about Isabella yesterday.

Waluigi is popular when? Seriously?
He is sort of an insignificant sidekick of a much more popular villian Wario?

Surprised to see responses saying that Isabelle is more popular than Waluigi. Perhaps she is more popular, but Waluigi is more recognizable, especially outside of the gaming world. I doubt my non-gaming friends would even know who Isabelle is.

Isabelle doesn't need to be part of a meme to get people to like her. She's organically likable.

Mario Party, a game for only the most grown-up of adults.

Isabelle is the main face of 12 million selling title.

Waluigi is lower than trash which shows as he cant even get his own game.

To even compare Isabelle with Waluigi is pure disrespect, hell it can be blasphemy toward Isabelle to be compared to such turd.

If you mean who is more well known is obviously Waluigi, and i don't think is up for discussion, he has appeared on so many games and he is part of the "main" cast of Mario Spinoffs.

Waluigi has much higher exposure and a longer history but Isabelle is a much more significant character in her series in the limited time she's been around. I'd say right now that Isabelle is more popular overall but not by all that much. Waluigi is at about the height of his popularity while Isabelle has a long way to go yet, she will totally eclipse him soon if she hasn't already

Isabelle is shaping up to be a major Nintendo mascot, with Mario, Link and Pikachu (she's already way bigger than Samus).

So, the only argument favoring Waluigi is: He's more recognizable by his association with the Mario brand. But then he is not the most popular of the two, just the easier to recognize visually (But most people will be guessing, "Um, dunno, evil lanky Mario?").

And the only argument against Isabelle is Googling name? Then you should add her japanese name + Doubotsu no mori + Canela (Her Spanish name) + Animal Crossing + Her french name + etc.

It's Isabelle, no question. And she is the biggest character of all the newcomers of Smash (Even Inklings who are still just growing in popularity)

Believe it or not, I'm siding with Waluigi on this one.

One is a cute main character that's the face of a multi million selling game franchise, the other is Waluigi.

I don't really know Isabelle but I have many casual friends and acquaintences that knew Waluigi before he was a meme.

I'm like 99% sure Waluigi will be in Smash someday even if he doesn't make the roster for Ultimate. Then we can all obsess over whatever character didn't make the cut after Waluigi.

To answer the thread question, anecdotally it's Waluigi but there's a big Animal Crossing fanbase so yeah.

I'm not nintendo fan and I barely heard of Isabelle before last direct (I think I've seen maybe a couple of screenshots at most). As far as nintendo franchises go, Animal Crossing is niche. Slightly more popular than Metroid or Fire Emblem, but still niche.
