Came to say this.

GTA is obviously big, but it doesn't really have a reoccurring setting or plot or characters.

Halo is a massively successful and influential series with a very popular mascot protagonist. I really hope Microsoft and Nintendo work out a deal for Master Chief because I think it would benefit both parties ultimately (pun intended)

Tomb Raider ain't even close. Halo, DOOM, Resident Evil, GTA, League of Legends/DOTA and Minecraft are all more recognizable (not saying that they would be a good fit or anything)

We have Blizzard x Nintendo with Diablo on switch, and World of Warcraft is still pulling in millions of subs per month.

So the question is, Arthas in Smash when?

Uncharted, Tomb Raider, Assassin's Creed, Halo. Virtually every major western series isn't represented.

Diddy Kong was Dk Jr. originally before Rare made him a new character right? Even if he wasn't, he's still kind of a derivative concept. So is King K. Rool the first designed from whole cloth Western character in Smash?

Retro Studios made Dark Samus and Little Mac was redesigned by Next Level Games, but they're all based on existing characters.

Regardless, it's all Japanese I.P's in Smash.

That's why I was hoping Shovel Knight was more than an assist trophy. His design and move set would have fit IMO.

You really wanna argue that Lara Croft isn't a video game icon?

She is an icon. She is FAR from most iconic.

On a separate note: has there ever been a fighter on the roster who's source material wasn't a video game? ie. a manga/anime?

If you want to be REALLY PEDANTIC, ROB is wasn't FROM a videogame. He is an acessory. MADE BY NINTENDO. FOR VIDEOGAMES.

in other words, Yes, But it s closer to justify the power glove or hanafuda cards than Goku

Iconic Franchise? Or Iconic Character within the franchise? 'Cause if it's just the franchise you'll start getting some characters that may be a stretch...

1. Call of Duty Soldier (Call of Duty) (275 million)
2. Cristiano Ronaldo (FIFA) (260 million)
3. Trevor (GTA) (250 million)
4. Sim (The Sims) (200 million)
5. Tetrimino (Tetris) (170 million)
6. Edgy Racer (Need For Speed) (150 million)
7. Steve (MineCraft) (144 million)
8. Tom Brady (Madden) (130 million)
9. Chase McCain (LEGO) (100 million)
10. Altair (Assassin's Creed) (100 million)
11. Lionel Messi (PES) (100 million)

That is the OFFICIAL SALES of tetris that has the TETRIS name.

Neither of these and similars are mentioned there, ALL have tetris in it.

And that is ignoring that not even half of that list runs on phones.

Tetris runs even on that indestructible nokia

Also, can you play fucking CALL OF DUTY on the WINDOWS OF BUILDINGS ?

DOOM, Halo, GTA, Skyrim, Resident Evil, Call of Duty, Monster Hunter

but those are all straight up gory franchises that don't gel with Smash Bros' style so I understand the exclusion

Tomb Raider, Halo, Half-Life, DOOM, Overwatch, in that order.

Tetris and actual Pong for non-character representation.

GTA... though a GTA protagonist in Smash would be incredibly lame. Trevor Philips in Mortal Kombat on the other hand is a guest character I can get behind.

Halo and Resident Evil were the first ones that came to mind. I can easily see Jill or Chris making it in.

It's definitely Resident Evil. It wasn't the first horror game by any stretch of the imagination, but I'd argue it's almost completely responsible for how horror games blew up in the mid to late 90's and early 2000's, and the entire scene as we know it today has been influenced in ways both subtle and obtuse by some aspect of the RE series. It's crazy pants to not have Leon as a playable character in Smash, absolute crazy pants I say!

Until we get the PASBR DLC pack, the game is nowhere near "complete"

In seriousness, though,

fire/wind power-ups, slamming the ground with his head, grabbing ledges with his TEETH - there's so much Smash potential here. I bring him up in this thread because of the "iconic" part--a lot of Japanese love thanks to PC Engine's overseas success (which, let's face it, makes him more likely than Master Chief, in terms of what Nintendo considers "iconic").

Dragon Quest, Warcraft, and Minecraft come to mind immediately.

Not convinced Fortnight will still be a thing in 5 years.

ALSO... Space Invaders.
