I definetely expected a below 80 score cause Rise of Tomb Raider to me personally was a horrible game and it didnt look like they managed to improve in the sequel. Rather the opposite. Kinda funny how shadow of the tomb raider fell on its nose. This is not good enough. Day Never for me.
The game is getting 9/10 reviews left, right, and center. How did the game "fall on its nose", exactly?

This thread is weird. The psychology of review scores is weird.

Again, completely ignores sports/filler/licensed games. I get your intent though. For a big budget game, and especially given the critical reviews of the previous two games, the more divisive reviews here are probably a disappointment.
Most of those were in there:

MLB The Show 16: 85
FIFA 17: 84
NHL 17: 78
WWE 2K17: 69

I did forget Madden and NBA, but they were also higher:

NBA 2K17: 88
Madden 17: 82

I'm not sure I missed $60 licensed games though. Most of those are now sub-$60 or on mobile instead. I could be forgetting something you had something in mind though.

It's currently sitting at a 76 metacritic score with 30 reviews. I can honestly see it dropping to the 70-75 range when it's all said and done. The most glaring negative seems to be that it suffers from being "more of the same". IGN surprisingly gave it a 9.0 though. I'll probably pick it up for myself later this year for around $30-40.

See, as I predicted. The Arkham Origins of Tomb Raider. Watch the next Crystal Dynamics game be the Arkham Knight of Tomb Raider and fuck everything up but still somehow manage to get a better reception.

I can't wait. Enjoyed the previous games and I know this one will be amazing too. Hope I'm able to complete it before FH4 and RDR2 though.

The part that has me interested in this despite really disliking the second game, is the apparent greater focus on platforming/exploration. This could go either way though, especially as much of the platforming in these kinds of games is automated, but exploration as well as surrounding RPG (even RPG lite) systems were the main reason I found the first game so fun.

So basically they implemented almost everything that people wanted Crystal Dynamics to add in the predecessors iand they get rewarded with 4/10 scores? Really puzzling stuff.

Not that puzzling.

I enjoyed the 2013 game because it was a bit fresh. It was undoubtedly and uncharted clone in many ways, but it also had a very cool mteroidvania feel, and the RPG systems were in depth enough to make progression feel fun. The combat was also surprisingly satisfying.

The story, writing, characters etc... were all awful, but the gameplay was more than enough to pull me through the entire things from start to finish and enjoying myself.

The second game showed me that was only really good enough for one game, though. Despite the improvements to the actual gameplay, I couldn't finish it. It just felt too much like more of the same. Had they improved the story maybe that would have been enough, but in pure gameplay terms it bored me.

So if the third game feels like another iteration with some nice refinements but no real significant changes, I can completely understand how this instalment could feel very underwhelming.

What really annoys me is the fact that it appears as the game fell victim of trying to be bigger and adding too much with for no real reason. What's the point of having so many upgrades, resources and even whole tombs if in the end you get nothing of actual importance?

I am not hearing what is so odd about the laugh. Some of you need to get into the world more often.

And that 90% from IGN isn't on the PS4 76% MC page. Both the Xbox and the PS4 page are missing tons of reviews.

Didn't ever realise MC did that!

It sounds like I should really enjoy it since I loved the first two "reboot" games, and I have no doubt it will look incredible on my Xbox One X. I just need to finish Spider-Man before Friday :)

Eidos Montreal is definitely not a B team
Yeah. I hope this isn't blamed on them! This is CD's trilogy--EM just came in a did some work, but all of the faults with the gameplay and story stem from CD's decisions with the other two games. It wouldn't have been any better if they made it.

EM couldn't just come in a do a soft reboot. CD probably already had everything drawn up.

From Kotaku's review:
The game's thoughtful script is undermined by the puns used in the titles of challenge missions and Achievements or Trophies. Feel the pathos of people whose village has been ravaged by an oil company. Shoot a red barrel to activate a "crude awakenings" barrel-shooting challenge. Rescue a sad little girl's father named Hakan and get the Trophy "I believe Hakan fly."

That's rough. Game's looking good though.

I'm sure the game is fun and I would have been day one if I wasn't still playing Spider-Man but it's a shame it seems they haven't really addressed the issues with the first two games.

User warned: Peddling baseless conspiracy theories, thread derailment.
It seems it has been really well received here in Europe, mostly 90s.

It's unfortunate seeing only some American bashers ruining global reception for this title... :( Too much Spiderman bias?

I won't lie, the "hyuk-hyuk" puns in the challenge titles (around otherwise grim events in the story) would bug the hell out of me. That's a tonal bellyflop, and I'm glad Kotaku called it out.
