Metascores are rubbish especially when a game is divisive like this, you need to actually look at what people are saying about both these games.
Only time metacritic is good for anything is when a game gets universal acclaim or everyone hates it. Everything in between is just too murky these days. What is a 78 on MC when one outlet says it's a 6 and another an 8.5?

You did notice MC is currently missing a significant amount of sub 7 reviews? They only have two 6 reviews mentioned, and in this topic I've seen like 5 or 6 of those, and a 4, which is also not mentioned. These will pull the average way down I'm afraid.
To bad. Action adventures are my favorite genre. But glad Spider-Man will keep me busy for a while.
Still have to write mine (just finished the game yesterday). But if you enjoyed the previous ones, you'll like this one too. It's a natural extention of those adventures, focussing a little less on the survival aspect (it's mostly optional now), but adding a more living world in it's place. The exploration and puzzles are again the absolute highlights, while the combat is good but not amazing. The emphasis is more on stealth this time around, and it mostly works, but I'd like to have seen a more open approach to things. Often you are still forced in certain combat scenario's (you'll need to stealth this section, can't escape shooting in the next) and I think there is a missed potential for letting the player play with Lara's skills and creating their own style as so often stealth is the easiest way to go.
The biggest let-down was the story. After promises of a darker story where Lara's shadowy side is explored... it's just isn't really there. And where it gets closest to this promise is in sidequests, not in the main plot that turns very cliched very fast. It's really uneven too. (The shot of Lara rising out of a lake with flames in the background? That scene is cool too see and play, but feels totally out of place and that dark side Lara is very quickly tossed aside again). Also, just as the previous two, this story could have used some lightheartedness. It's overly serious and selfconsious again, whiney voice and all.

Hahah, tbh, I think the odds aren't really in your favor for that one either.
x1 has lower number of reviews than ps4. its 78 on PS4 and dropping fast
The review scale has been compressed greatly this past generation. Anything under 85 isn't a good game.
That's the Xbox version. He's referring to the PS4 version which has since dropped to 75.
Ah maybe it hasn't updated yet but it's showing 74 on MC for me currently

Some strange hate on this site. Weird!? Launching too near a PS4 exclusive IMO.
This game could be the final decider in why I think reviews are complete bullshit now. After seeing the praise for spider-man and the low scores for this, even though tons of reviews say it's easily the best of the three. Very strange.

Its like missing like half of the reviews. Opencritic is better that way. One score all together. It has there 55 reviews and a 8.2.

Because it's not just one or two negative reviews, there are quite a few. This will finish up in the mid to low 70's at this rate.
It doesn't look to be a game that has brought anything new to the table, it's more of the same as far as the "rebooted" trilogy goes.
They need to wipe the slate clean and go back to Tomb Raiders roots.
Yeah mee too, those reviews are all over the place - my god... if its anything like the 2 games before its gonna be a very fine adventure.
It seems it is falling apart when it comes to the stealth predator system. I don't think some reviewers fully utilized the system,and tried to engage it as a traditional action game.
I'm a bit surprised because the two leaked reviews were fairly high, so I guess I'm slightly disappointed that it's this polarizing.
That being said, a lot of folks are operating like the high scores—which are somewhat numerous!—don't exist, maybe because they hate the series, new Lara, etc.
Gotcha. The PS4 is missing a ton of the big reviews like the IGN one. Seems like they're split over both platforms on MC? Both Xbox and PS4 metacritic pages are missing loads. Xbox missing a lot of lower ones, PS4 missing higher ones.
Opencritic seems like it has them all on one page? That's at 82%
The reviews actually make me feel better. A few of them make me think this will be as good or better than the previous games without all the overblown hype and expectations. In other words, this one is reviewing where the other 2 should have.
Even if certain people expected it to play differently, I don't think that justifies a low score. You don't give a 4/10 if a game is really good at what it does but not what you wanted it to do. Either IGN and other sites overlooked the game's genuine flaws, or the ones who scored it really low didn't get what they wanted, which doesn't seem fair to me.
This is what's fucked up about the review scoring system. If a game that doesn't even work gets a 4/10, then what deserves a 1, 2, or a 3?
For me, if a game functions but simply is not fun at all to play, then I'd say it deserves a 4/10.
But there quite a few, if not more, positive reviews. Why don't those count with equal weight in the hive mind?

EDIT: Oh, that's the Xbone version. Ignore me, I'm dumb :p.
Opencritic is better always because they dont use that multiplier thing MC uses. Because for some reason a IGN is more worth then abit smaller site. Always baffled me.
The new ones force the horrible story/characters down your throat so It's valid to shit on that. Lara is legit miserable.
I mean I think a high 70s low 80s score would be pretty good for this type of game. I do want another Deus Ex though...
Three games and they've all got nearly identical weapons and upgrades. They're just different locales in each. Why even tease dual-wielding pistols at the end of TR when the subsequent two games have zero alterations to a weapon kit? Lara has just become more foolhardy in different settings.
