How do you like your puddles?

  • The entire game should take place inside a huge puddle

  • As big as Insomniac's artists want them to be

  • As deep as my knowledge of game development

  • I prefer oceans tbh

LOL at saying the traffic and ped density is reduced

It is easily the most crowded and busy npc count and traffic I've seen this gen
Nah, that tiny section is indicative of the rest of the city since it has less traffic than the previous build. If every screenshot of a street doesn't include bumper to bumper traffic, then it's downgraded!

It's the perfect moment to explain some things about JPG and GIF compression, temporal and spatial video compression, OSes color profile etc. Or not.

How about not showing them "years early" at all, then? The whole downgrade-gate thing started because developers showed games or supposed "in game graphics" that didn't match the final product plenty of times in the past, which got people angry and made them sensitive to any kind of supposed downgrade (this sensitivity is entirely understandable)

I'm an advocat of not showing a game until it's ready to be shown.

But it was ready...

You think that's bad? Try this shot:

It doesn't look ANYTHING like E3 any more.
Haha shit.

I couldn't care less about the final look of the game as it looks fantastic, but I do wholeheartedly agree that it's time for the E3 bullshots to end.

If anything, pre-release versions of games should be looking worse than final builds, but we're always swamped with these games where the final release has noticeable differences from showcased builds, and it's getting extremely frustrating.

This is the stupidest complain I've read in a while. I don't know, maybe that puddle had a lot of fans but I personally couldn't care less about it.

oh man, I had almost forgotten about this foolishness

it's especially stupid in retrospect since Second Son is still one of the best looking games of the generation
It 100% has the best particle system in any game. Not even GoW tops it.

They did this to prevent "too much water" from IGN.

And the only relevant downgrade is making the game run in 30fps.

Someone should take two real life pictures, one of morning-time after running the hose in their front yard, then one in the afternoon after the water is gone and the sun has changed position.

DOWNGRADE!!

exactly what i was thinking, obviously i did expect the response, but will be cool to remind people of this thread the next time there's a thread about a downgraded game from another company and everyone jump on the bandwagon of it being super clear and oh my god how could the do this.
So are you going to keep a list and match up people then?

How can anyone look at this specific scene and say there's absolutely no difference? Seriously?

Of course there is, and the E3 version clearly looks better.

Now you can say that you don't care about the difference... that's up to you. But don't tell me the two shots are identical.
Nobody thinks the shots are identical.

Man, I don't know why people are saying this. OBVIOUSLY they are different. The question is whether the game's visuals were DOWNGRADED. Based on all the evidence we have (not just the part in this one scene), it has not.

Maybe I'm missing something (time of day?) but the suit pics in the OP absolutely look like a (pretty significant) downgrade to me

Nobody is saying the shots are identical. Even insomniac is not saying the shots are identical. In fact they have gone into detail about the differences in that particular scene. However, downgrade implies visual fidelity of the title was decreased in the form of asset quality, polygon counts, lighting/shadow quality etc. The visual fidelity has not decreased, the direction/arrangement for the scene changed.

You can prefer one arrangement over the other, and find one more visually appealing than the other as well. People like shiny things (more puddles) and some prefer a cooler tone in lighting like the older footage. But it isn't a downgrade, which implies it was too much for the system to run or for the game to handle and hence quality was decreased. There are plenty more scenes in the game from the release footage that are way more complex than that scene in last year's e3 trailer. And there are other locations already shown in preview footage with even more puddles than this scene as well.

And don't tell me that the bottom photo - which is compressed and washed out - is indicative of what the current game looks given the bevy of shots we've seen to the contrary.

The fact that these two specific photos look different - which they admittedly do - isn't proof of any downgrade. (Unless you believe that is what the game will look like when played on the console)

Its the lighting change that realy makes the difference... all the reflections in spideys suit are gone.
Yeah, his suit isnt suppose to reflective light like that. That was actually something they said they wanted to fix and they did.

But shininess looks better if you take a still pic even if it makes no sense. And that's supposedly part of the downgrade

Being ready to be shown is 1) completely nebulous. There isn't like a "ready to be shown" point where suddenly nothing changes and 2) not does it mean that nothing can change between that reveal and release.

That is the nature of game development. Hell, it's the nature of movie development too. How many times has CGI improved or changed between trailer and release, or scenes cut out or reshot? What you're asking is completely unrealistic and shows a lack of understanding of how game devs works

Theres no difference in the quality of the lighting or geometry or textures. The sun was moved so that now that building is in shadow, so you dont see as much contrast or the highlights on spideys uniform. You can dislike the artistic choice but youre objectively wrong if you think its graphically worse.
The geometry looks the same.

But as for lighting, regarding your point about the sun -- did Insomniac specifically say that about the sun, or is that just random people guessing here?? (in the OP's twitter replies from Insomniac, I don't see them saying anything about the sun)

The sheer amount of pain and suffering caused by trivial details in video games is amazing. Hopefully there's no dialogue in the game that I can interpret as offensive.

If the sun has moved position how are the shadows still in the same place? FFS this is basic stuff that gets taught when you're 8 years old in primary school.

The henchmen shadows have been changed from actual outlines to blobs.

I never said the sun changed position. I said the shadows on the henchmen are different. Going from blobs to outlines is an example of hard light vs soft light. Hence a lighting change of some sort. It doesn't have to be the sun.

If a game should not be shown yet because there might be changes to it in the future, then a game will only be ready to be shown when it ships.

Have you played the build? If not, I'd trust the people who have played the build. Visuals are not the only part of a game.

By your standards they wouldn't show the game until it has gone gold then?

I personally would not have a problem with that. Personaly I hate annoucements years in advance anyway. However, I don't think the only way to show your game would be on the day it releases. 3 month or less in advance would be optimal.

It's a really bad look how casually people on here throw out the word 'lying' to describe devs making artistic changes and optimizing their game.

Especially when the "lie" is usually... a different video being posted, as if that was some sort of statement and/or attempt to hoodwink them. When you can look at what's there now and judge based on that... it's new information, not obscuring what previously existed.

It's hurting my brain trying to process the mentality here such that someone could care about this. Even if this was somehow real you're, what, angry that you were excited for a version of the game with extremely slightly barely better graphics than what exists? But you know what it looks like now? Don't buy it if you don't like what it looks like now? Or is it that the barely better looking version will never really exist and you wanted that one? Or... what, even.

Changing games early on is fine, just don't slap (100% PURE GAMEPLAY UNALTERED BITCH) on the top of your trailers when you know it's going to look worse when it comes out.

I don't think Insomniac did that? And is Spider-Man going to look worse when it's out?

I personally would not have a problem with that. Personaly I hate annoucements years in advance anyway. However, I don't think the only way to show your game would be on the day it releases. 3 month or less in advance would be optimal.

Until a game goes gold, there will be changes, maybe not big ones, but there will be changes.
