Most Titanfall fans on reddit probably remember the infamous sushi leak from last year, leak didn't really gain that much attention outside of r/titanfall so I'm pretty sure that most people on era have never heard of it.

In this leak, someone claims to work in a sushi restaurant where Respawn developers drop by every once in a while, and he apparently eavesdrops a lot of information in regards to the studio's projects, the leak dates back way before Respawn's acquisition by EA.

In short, he confirms that Titanfall 3 is in development using the same Source engine from the last two games, the mere existence of a third Titanfall game probably isn't surprising to most people who pay close attention to these sort of things, but the thing that's weirding me out the most about this leak is the game's release date.

It was apparently supposed to be released in April 2019.
So, EA acquires Respawn in November 2017, then EA Play passes by in June 2018 and we get... nothing.

I'm beginning to wonder if the game got internally rebooted, or even worse, cancelled (highly unlikely), I wonder if we're getting the same Titanfall that they were working on around the time of this leak (March 2017), which was supposedly a meaty Titanfall game in terms of singleplayer content, but given EA's recent business decisions and their love for shoving Frostbite down every EA developer's throat, I wonder if Titanfall 3 has received a major overhauls following EA's acquisition.

Here's the leak for those interested:

Titanfall 3 scheduled for April 2019. Titanfall 2 DLC. 6 primes and 1 brand new Titan before Christmas. Problems, staff exodus and re-org. Medal of Honor. Was in dev but just got cut.

Boy do I have news for you lot.

A very good friend of mine works in a Sushi restaurant in Chatsworth and the Respawn team drop in every few weeks. They chat loud and each a lot of Sushi apparently. From listening in to their conversation and talking to the Producer, this is the scoop. Clearly it's not a verbatim conversation but the Respawn staff cover the game week after week every time they visit so a lot of info can be found.

Hopefully when people see the efforts Respawn are making as they try and recover this game from pretty horrible sales, the community will stick around to see what they have in store as it's too early for us to give up on the game just yet.

Titanfall 3 is in the works!

So happy to hear this! This has been in progress since the beginning of the year and is currently scheduled for April 2019. It's going to use the same engine as Titanfall 2 but will be upgraded with some new features that are still being worked out based on what the designers need.

Titanfall 2 is DOA in the sales cycle at this stage due to a botched launch, terrible marketing and a poor online numbers. Having Titanfall 3 come out April 2019 will allow EA (publishers) to reset and recover the universe which they've sunk money into with little upside at this point and Respawn are worried that a game with giant Robots might not be as mainstream as Titanfall 1 sales hinted at. Sales for Titanfall 2 are less than Titanfall 1 even with an extra PS4 offering so the producer is worried the series might be killed off if Titanfall 3 doesn't sell well.

On tech, with 4k Consoles about to become mainstream and PC hardware making massive GPU leaps, the 3D engine which is already showing it's age (says Drew) would need to be replaced for a 2020/21 release date to handle modern requirements. They're going to use the same good enough engine they used in Titanfall 1 and Titanfall 2 with some additional polish added.

He was coy on details about the game other than they're focusing on a big unique SP game with every level having a time-shift moment and he's going to leave the MP details in the hands of the MP designers as "They're always late and won't make a decision until the day after it ships" Lol.

He said Titanfall 3 is not playable yet but it will be in a few months once the SP designers deliver the first action blocks(?) or level.

DLC. Not a great deal of detail on this other than it's with the 'B' design team. No new code features are going to be added, just art stuff and remixes. He did say they have a total of seven new Titans, six primes and one brand new Titan for later in the year called Monarch. He didn't sound massively excited about it as the online numbers were tailing off which makes supporting DLC not worth it when they can make big leaps for Titanfall 3. Obviously EA will dispute this as they have to.

Staff exodus? After Titanfall 2 shipped a few key people left the company including the guy who was head of art, Joel? who moved back to Activision.

They fired the Game Director as he wrote documents rather than directed the team and it's now a collaborative team effort with the producer running the show.

Apparently Respawn have their own internal marketing people who the team thinks are to blame for a terrible launch. They're going to replaced soon or have just been replaced, can't remember which one but he wasn't a fan. He did say most of the SP designers remain and they're the good ones as opposed to the MP team, which makes sense when you compare the quality of the SP to MP game. Personally all I want is a bigger SP game next time around and a back to basics game for MP but that's just me but SP was definitely the focus for Titanfall 3.

Medal of Honor! As a juicy leak of info, Respawn have a third team. The first being Titanfall, the second being Star Wars (looks very average he said) and a third team that was making Medal of Honor. Respawn had some of the original Medal of Honor people back on staff (remember this where the original team came from) but it recently got killed by EA as it was running late and they're not sure whether to keep developing the game on their own or cancel it. They're talking to other publishers about taking it on and using a different name other than Medal of Honor.

I have lots of other info from my scribbled notes that I'll share soon but I thought you'd all like to get some information of what's going on at Respawn and they aren't giving up on the game just yet.

I think that this leak is fairly legitimate due to several things, #1 he leaked Titanfall 2's DLC titan name long before it was ever possible to data-mine it on PC, #2 this whole thing about a canned Medal of Honor game getting its assets used on another project sounds... VERY FAMILIAR, #3 he claims that Respawn thinks that their Star Wars game looks "average", which might explain the lukewarm EA Play reveal we got for Jedi: Fallen Order.

They are most definitely still making it: https://www.ea.com/careers/careers-overview/worldwide-studios/respawn

Still very much happening, Spring 2019 is going to be even more challenging then the Fall that they launched 2 in.

I'll be there Day 1.

If there really is a Titanfall 3, hopefully this time EA gives it a release window that isn't sandwiched between other AAA shooters literally the week before and after

It's not coming out in 2019, I think, they're way past the point of announcing it, it's probably a 2020 game if we're very lucky, 2021 if it's been internally rebooted using Frostbite, I'm handing out these estimates out of my ass, though.

I hope EA gives Titanfall 3 the space it absolutely deserves, but reguardless, I'm grabbing it day 0 no question, CoD is obsolete with Titanfall on the block

Wouldn't be surprised if they moved people onto the Star Wars project to get that out the door by next fall and then will get back to Titanfall. Really excited for whenever TF3 happens. TF2 is one of the best of the gen.

The fact it was sandwhiched between ea own blockbuster game was even more baffling

People better buy titanfall 3, espcially those who complain theres no dlc free high action and interesting multiplayer games

Its still being made, just all hands probably are focusing on the star wars game.

For me, I hated the multiplayer beta they let people play. That's why I didn't get the game. The maps were awful. There was a lot of dumb gameplay stuff I hated like the grappling hook being pretty vital to navigating the maps and still being an ability that you needed to select. There were weird dead areas in the middle of some maps that would give you an out of bounds warning. I blame the dev team for the weird design decisions, not the marketing team. Lots of good games do well with small marketing.

I suspect both things might be true.

It very much could have looked average right after Titanfall 2 launched (as it would have been very early in its development cycle), and then looked much better as it got further in development later.

These days we have accounts that the thing looked so good that it was what pushed EA over the edge on closing up Visceral and rebooting that game.

Yeah thats very true. Given when this leaked game may have been in worse shape then.

The little bit I've heard out of Respawns Jedi game (which admittedly isnt a ton) is that EA are very bullish on how good the game looks

Titanfall brand is all about high speed wall jumping mobility. An aspect that seems to have fallen out of favour since COD milked it. Titanfall is not COD, but can it still be a success? Are the servers still buzzing with the existing iteration?

Not to jump on your ever-helpful info too much, but I just want to say that this is a very, very pleasing little revelation for me. Damned glad to hear it; hopefully it's just as good when it launches. I'm excited for it.

This game should get the month of July all to itself. It deserves it, if the campaign is as good as TF2. Will also be a good distance from Anthem

Likewise, I thank Benji for sharing this, while I'm off the Star Wars movies hype train, I've been really interested in what Stig Asmussen's been cooking ever since his departure from Santa Monica, reading this leak back in 2017 and reading that his SW game looked average felt like a punch in the guts.

Respawn only talking about their SW project so my guess is Titanfall team is switching to Frostbite which would be wonderful if true.

I don't think people are talking about for two reasons.

1. Everyone knows Titanfall 3 is happening. The fact that it exists is not surprising news, the job openings Respawn has had have said as much.

2. This leak seems like old news. It's pretty safe to say the game is not going to come out in April 2019 as we haven't seen anything of it yet. The fact that we haven't seen anything also contributes to the lack of discussion...because without seeing anything, there isnt much to discuss. Same goes for the Star Wars game they are working on.

I like that the leak suggests they are still focusing resources on singleplayer, but who knows if that is still accurate

I mean, EA is contractually obligated to release Titanfall 3. I believe it was part of the agreement to sell Respawn to them in the first place.

Personally i dont get why after how well TF2 did. A series should be growing at this point if its to be a success.

Cant see how Star Wars does not suck up all those staff and TF3 just gets delayed as a project internally at respawn before being cancelled.

Same engine for TF3 doesn't surprise me at all - don't fix what isn't broken. It's still disappointing. The engine definitely shows its age, and it's hard not to salivate at the possibility of what a Frostbite-based TF could look like.

Didn't the second game sell very poorly? Why would they make a third game?
EA expect their games to sell 10 mil of copies. Anything below 10 mil is considered below expectancy. Just look at Dead Space 3. Sold really good amount of copies, yet Visceral was put on chopping block because it did not exceed EA's ridiculously high expectations. Titanfall 2 sold 5-6 million copies, really good number if you look at from ordinary game company's view, but papa EA was not pleased with it and will probably have Respawn murdered if the next one does not meet their insane expectations, just like all other Respawn's predecessors.

I'd personally rather see the game stay on Source, the game will definitely look better on Frostbite, but will it play better?
I'm mainly worried about bunnyhopping, which seems to be something that's integrated into Source, so they might need to code bunnyhopping on Frostbite and I fear it won't feel as smooth as it does on Source.

Though you may just get your wish if the reason they haven't revealed Titanfall 3 yet is due to EA's meddling.

That's the problem with a lot of games these days, they put too much money in to developing these games, so they're forced to have way too high expectations in order to be successful.

That didn't answer the question.
My post implies that it's unclear. The sales number is really good if you look at from non-EA's point of view. But this is EA and they could have the entire team shelved for another in-house dev project just because the number did not please bunch of suits' insane sales expectancy.

Titanfall 2 had some massive discounts very quickly after release, something to take into consideration there as it was half price like a month later. Sometimes the pure sales numbers don't mean much.

And Dead Space 3 didn't sell a good amount of copies, I thought it dropped off from 2 by like 40%? And it had a poor launch despite next to no competition in its release month.

So you're saying that this guy just shot in the dark and guessed the DLC titan's name in his leak right? And the canned MoH project might've been true, too, considering that Respawn teased a WW2(?) VR game not too long ago.

Also, Titanfall's codenames (R1=Titanfall 1, R2 = Titanfall 2) are fairly known to a lot of Titanfall hardcore fans, I really wouldn't be surprised if they referred to it as R3 and the guy caught on.

I think it was outed already that they were working on a VR title, Star Wars and TF3 when the acquisition details were leaked.

Also didn't quite a few Respawners go back to Infinity Ward?

Looks like it checks out tbh.

Nah, EA is just greedy and think all their games are supposed to bring in as much revenue as their microtransaction games.

What the hell they were making Medal of Honor? It's weird because Infinity Ward was formed from former MoH devs and Respawn was formed from former Infinity Ward devs. What a full circle.
