I'm surprised that 75 year old man didn't pick up on the ironic toxic masculinity

???

... it's a ... metaphor.

How old are you?

I know it is... my point was that this particular metaphor is usually reserved for times when a person is taking it too far to defend something obviously problematic.

But I guess your choice of metaphors fits with the general hyperbole and self-righteousness on display ITT.

Personally, I'm more forgiving of a young person making stupid mistakes, provided that they didn't double down on it, and given the way the story went, I'm happy to give her the benefit of doubts that she has learnt her lesson, as Hickam has decided to forgive her after her apology.

While there is a discussion to be had about whether sexist expressions like "suck my dick" or "grow a pair" should exist, I don't think that's her sole responsibility to weed out these misogynistic ideas from the society.

She made a mistake, she apologized for it, the subject of her insult accepted her apology, I don't think she needs to be punished further.

Now whether she should get a better position out of this is another story, but it's not my decision to make.

What self-righteousness.

I just hope she and other people learned from this. You clearly haven't though hence why this is still a thing.

An aggresively insulting response isn't all that unusual if a stranger inserts themselves telling you to watch your language. Dude should have used more than one word to explain.

On the other hand, people need to realize that that sort of posting on Twitter with your friends is not a private conversation. Lots don't seem to understand that lol.

Your arguments are flawless... oh wait.

But you are just confirming how people will defend and argue in favor of clear offensive language because you like the person.

The term pussy is a problem as it's using female demoralised to paint someone as passive, submissive, unable to stand up for themselves, etc... which obviously is negative toward actual female human beings and can perpetuate sexist ideas.

Telling a person to suck you dick doesn't have the same problematic undertones. It's rude, but it's not perpetuating sexist ideals.

Do you really not see the difference?

LMAO, yeah, can't do that.

The first tweet I can understand a little bit due to excitement (still an idiotic move), but that response?

...yikes.

it's interesting to see the double standard in resetera's overall response to this case and the arenanet case on the one hand, and the james gunn case on the other

in two of these, the consensus seems to support someone being stupid on twitter losing their job, while in the other there is overwhelming support for the person being stupid on twitter later losing their job

i wonder what is the factor that explains this discrepancy

good to see the nasa guy being reasonable about this

She's a FEMALE and a "furfag" (eye roll) it's the perfect double whammy to shit on /s

Stop making inflammatory generalizations in reference to subcultures or drawing conclusions about people on the basis of an avatar.

Social media is nuts. I think it was a dick move for the guy take oublic umbrage with what she said, even if he didn't make her lose the internship. Going after someone for some victimless language on social media is lame. That's the risk of social media though. But he definitely made up for it by getting her a better position.

Her friends hastag their awful messages to him with #nasa. So it was her friends that help her lose the internship along with her awful potty mouth.

Whoever narc'd on her is a fucking tool. Hope she gets her position back.
I don't get this mindset tbh, if you do something wrong then you probably deserve to get told on. Telling somebody to suck your dick is unacceptable especially when all they said was "language" so even though she wasn't actually "narc'd" she fully deserved to be.

This is sad and hilarious at the same time, but jeez, people are taking forever to wrap their hands around this "don't be a douchebag on social media" concept.

saw this yesterday on the tl, was like "oh well" but Hickson is being very kind about it. Maybe a lesson has been learned

Not the best idea to let loose on social media these days.

That being said, I don't see anything wrong with what she posted at first. Shouldn't lose a job over it. Gotta keep your head down though.

I'm glad she got her internship back, it's a good resolution with a strong lesson for them about social media. It's kinda scary to see so many posters in this thread wanting to see her fail so badly, is seeing people fail that much of a drug to people?

I'm amazed they're helping her get a new internship. Acting like that on social media is a giant red flag and I don't think that I would want to be associated with someone who acted like that and didn't have the sense not to. It's a severe lack of good judgement.

Yikes. Seeing that exchange would definitely cause me to raise my eyebrows and question what kind of person was just hired. Hickam is being super gracious. Hopefully she learned something.

It's not about wanting to see someone fail. As I mentioned in my last post, it's about her character and lack of sound decision making. If I offered someone a job and that happened, I wouldn't give them a second chance. Who knows how they'll act in the future and what kind of damage it could do to your organization or your own reputation, as you were the one who offered them that opportunity.

Homer Hickam comes out of this looking pretty well. Naomi comes out looking like a dumb fuck who hopefully learned that social media means that random person you just told to suck your dick might be important.

By "loses it" I thought this was going to be a feel good story about a person celebrating and losing his/her mind over twitter over the fact. Turns out I was wrong.

Ehhh an old guy telling a young women "language" has always rubbed me the wrong way because boys are allowed to be boys and girls are expected to be models of decorum.

I'm glad they're resolving things and came to a happy conclusion.

Moral of the story:

Stop screaming on social media thinking no one's watching. People are.
Mentorship programs are great and we should endorse them way more than we do.
Your dumbass friends will always get you in more trouble than you would get into yourself.

Goddamn she's a dumbass. And she's still accepted at NASA? Christ lol

I know a lot of genius level dumbasses.
