Look dude, don't get me wrong, God of War looks incredible. It's flooring. But literally everything the player can touch emits particles. It's madness. I just can't see how it all improves the game's look. It doesn't make the game look more realistic unless you live somewhere with perpetual blizzards and the fastest accumulating dust on earth.

I think it will hold up graphically overall, but those particles are going to date it to 2018 pretty hard.

Battlefront 2. It's subtle but the best replication of particle effects I have seen in a game.

Not really technically special, but snowfall in the Resistance was masterful.
Such a gentle dance of snowflakes in midst of a warzone.

This is an example I actually like because the particle effects here never occupy every significant space on screen. Your character is never obscured or just utterly surrounded by sparks. It's crazy, and there are a lot of fucking particles, but they seem purposeful.
While this Destiny 2 example is cool until 6:00, when the screen is just a mess of blue and orange magic blings dominating everything.

Probably Infamous Second Son or Killer Instinct. That neon stuff in Infamous is amazing and was one of the first really proper next gen things that I saw this gen. KI didn't wow me overall in the same way but the particle effects specifically are crazy good.

Sony 1st party really nailed particle effects this gen. All the talk about GPU accelerated particles actually amounted to something in the end. Also nice to see things improving continually with each new first party release.

Horizon isn't a game that pops into mind when thinking about particle effects, but the game actually uses them a ton to give the combat some weight and indicate impacts (I guess animating impact on these huge robots isn't all that simple, so signaling it with the help of particle effects is a smart idea):

InFamous: Second Son has some amazing particle effects. The Neon stuff in particular. Also, the final boss battle when all of the rocks are flying around on-screen without the frame rate dying was probably my first "next-gen moment" on the PS4.

God of War and FFXV are up there too.

I love particle effects, they look amazing. Since some of the ones I was going to list have already been mentioned I'll add FFXV and Nier Automata, both have some awesome particle fx.

The Alterna spell from FF15. The sound it makes as enemies gets sucked in makes it even better.

Vagrant Story on PS1 did a lot of really impressive stuff with particle effects way back in the day.

Coolest particles ≠ The most particles, a lot of examples posted here are way overdone

Promethean Knight deaths in Halo always were super cool to me. The way they slowly dissolve from the point where they were shot out is awesome.

The dynamic physx smoke effects from firing weapons in Metro 2033 are leagues above anything I've seen since and it's been 8 years. No where near as exaggerated as other uses of Nvidia tech. The redux version eliminated them entirely which is a bummer.

Especially for games that go beyond just generating glowing flecks for a more superficial effect, the train station crash in Quantum Break is definitely up there for showing an actual environment change with crumbling particles.

Infamous second son was noticable great on this front :)

FYI OP, That first pic from killer instinct isnt a particle effect. No particles involved. Its a sprite effect (you can see the pixels of the image along the edge of the effect)

this thread reminds me of the time I used a particle emitter to make "2D" animated grass. Some great examples in here.
