Last summer, authorities began blocking pictures of Winnie the Pooh on social media given that the character has become a symbol of the resistance in China with foes of the ruling Communist Party, namely Chinese leader Xi Jinping. Bloggers have drawn comparisons between the pudgy bear and Xi, which has put the country's censors in overdrive. In June, Chinese authorities blocked HBO after Last Week Tonight host John Oliver mocked Xi's sensitivity over being compared to Winnie the Pooh.

These rulers all have this desire to be seen as strong and serious., but they never have the confidence to match.

Damn, imagine having that much authority and still being so pathetic. Is it so naive to want leaders that lead for the betterment of the people they lead, rather than for their own aggrandizement?

I don't think Xi even cares enough to give an order. This would happen to a meme against any leader in China, cause it makes the party look bad.

Is or will the new Christopher Robin movie be on chinese cinemas? It's ridiculous not to have an innocuous movie just due to political petulance, even for China's tightened foreign movie quota.

At this point just own up to it. If you own it then the mocking becomes hollow. State-sponsor the shit out of it. But, alas, the vanity of these governments really get the better of them.

The degree and consistency to which the leadership in China proves to be petty worthless garbage never ceases to amaze me.

Total Barbara Streisand effect. What would have been a silly internet meme is now pretty much a sign of resistance.

Was that really just because of the Pooh comparison? The whole segment wasn't exactly praising Xi, but to be fair, I don't know how the censors handle other china critical media.

What is the most enjoyed/consumed product from the west in China? Maybe we should plaster it with Pooh images so it gets blocked and the masses rise against the censorship when something of utmost worth is withheld from them. Sounds like a plan, right? :P

German cars? Avenger movies?

I would say transformers, but the last one did a lot worse in BO.
