Yes

Other than data through NPD reports
Interesting. I don't keep up with this stuff and don't mean to derail, but was it pretty much a seamless transition? If you know. It feels like the importance of sales numbers was never going away. Maybe investors are way more in touch with where the games industry is going than I'm giving them credit for and embraced the GaaS model and reporting knowing that it was a good change fro them.

you're not allowed to question the numbers, its a HUGE success!

I like the game but questioning the number because gamepass was practically free for almost two months is reasonable in my mind.
Are Fortnite's numbers being questioned because that's free to play too? Not really sure what relevance Game Pass has here in that sense. And who is getting a 2 month free Game Pass trial?

Not to mention, you said yourself:
for a game like this it doesn't madder how much it sold, it madders how many people got their hands on it so its a great success for Rare imo.

Dang, 30th place on a game released not long ago that everyone with GamePass has access to? Thought it was doing a bit better than than based on Microsoft PR.

These updates are slowly building the game up into something I can really see myself and my friends sinking some time into. They're righting the ship, and I'm happy to see them have success.

everyone was talking about that when it came to pubg back then and now fortnite. its just weird to me cause on one side they report about MAU which is exactly that but monthly and then on players played..not even sales.
People were using steam charts and those things. And those are 2 cases. Console publishers almost never talk about concurrent users. Rainbow six FIFA for honor destiny etc we all get players because that's what's important. It's about engagement.

It is nice, I look forward to trying it again a few updates in. I don't like the trend of games as a service essentially being full priced early access games. It probably saves some projects from being outwright canceled though. I find it curious they cancelled Fable Legebds when it had more content than SoT had a launch.

Excited for this after being a bit underwhelmed by the Sunken Curse (the other two were good tho).

Excited to explore more!

If the game was doing that well why don't they talk about sales numbers for it? Also it stays around the 30's in terms of most played games on Xbox Live. It has it's audience but it really doesn't sound that huge.
Lol. I think you are just trying to downplay the success of the game...when last did MS give sales numbers? we all know how successful FH3 has been yet we still don't know how many copies they sold, all we got from MS was the "9 million players" so why would this be an issue for you now? Rare says its been a huge success for them, MS says it surpassed their sales estimates.

Turns out Sea of Thieves actually sold a lot better than Microsoft had forecast
https://www.videogamer.com/news/tur...sold-a-lot-better-than-microsoft-had-forecast
Sea of Thieves Surpassed Microsoft's Sales Expectations

Anyway Congrats Rare. well deserved.

Ehh, I just don't like how some users automatically disregard anyone that brings up gamepass. The 5m number is obviously directly affected by gamepass; discussing the effects of such service on the success of a game is something that shouldn't be discouraged (or how gamepass is working as intended).

I got something like a month and a half of gamepass for $1 all together. I got my fill of SOT in that time and I feel like a lot of players did as well. (I do plan to buy it in the future because I see something great there; but i'll wait a bit so it fill ups with content).

Come on, 5 millions unique players is not the same as sales, and is not even the same as MAU, but still speaks about people at least trying the game, you think is not a good sign, well, that number not growing would be a way worst sign. Is a positive number, that's it.

I disagree with all the "look how much content they've been adding" because it's really fucking shallow at the end of the day, things like these skeleton crews and the hungering deep end up turning into nothing more than an anecdote or a boring obstacle when sailing from A to B as soon as the timed event ends, at best.

Game content continues to be the same 3 types of missions and the same skull fortresses with a few unimaginative shitty weekly events sprinkled here and there.

Content padding aside, the few hours these timed campaigns give you are fun, sure, but as soon as you do them once there is no reason to come back.

I think the transparency (obvious selectivity) of that concern about whether the player base is "real" is why people disregard the point. It's played out frequently enough in discussion to be roundly dismissed on its merits. Whether it's a discrete purchase or a paid membership, people are being drawn to the game well outside of the launch buzz. We're also well outside of the window where free promo Game Pass memberships could even theoretically move the needle.

At least someone gets the picture. This was my main problem with the game and it hasn't changed since launch. These updates have added barely anything to do. Let me know when the game actually gets substantial new stuff to do that will keep me busy and not lead back to doing the same 3 things over and over again.

I've been coming back for approx 3 to 4 hours virtually every night since the game came out with my group (most of who I've met playing the game). I shudder to think how many hours I've sunk into Sea of Thieves. It's my daily game. It's addicted me like no other game. I appreciate you didn't find the fun and you can disagree all you want but it's opinions. I absolutely adore the game and the content they've added since launch.

Game's fun, and 5 million players since launch is nice, but what's the average concurrent count?
