Yeah this is definitely my new favorite MI film. They just keep getting better and better. Hope McQuarrie sticks around for the next one.

I really dug the score; felt like a cross between Zimmer TDK strings and even some Jonny Greenwood synthy stuff (thinking specifically this track).

I rewatched all 5 movies over the past week before going into Fallout and it really helped me appreciate the movie a lot more. The villains, Ilsa, Baldwin, etc all just clicked immediately into place and it was great.

Fan fucking tastic in Dolby Digital, gonna go watch it in IMAX next week to compare. I know some people say the movie is a tad overlong but outside of maybe 15-30 seconds they could have cut from an action scene or two there isn't a lot of fat in here. Its moving at a fast clip and the beat is pretty solid.

9/10 from me, it really saved the summer action movies. I sort of had reset my expectations to a new low after Rampage, Skyscraper, Jurassic World 2, Oceans 8, etc but Tom Cruise really saves the day. The Rock needs to fire whomever is handling his jobs or action choreography or something, because his movies are looking pretty weak right now in contrast.

The final action scenes in Kashmir were drop dead gorgeous, between that and the Paris car chase scenes this is definitely now somewhere in my top 5 action movies list.

Is it really that hilarious? At some level it starts to get silly how riddled with moles and double agents major intelligence agencies are, and the way it tends to work in the villain's favor often feels strangely contrived.
Well, it's pretty funny that you're concerned about CIA background checks in a movie this divorced from reality. But it does get annoying with all the double crosses and secret internal bad guys all the time.

McQuarrie is such an adept writer, he gives every character a moment to shine and humanises them, gives them lives of their own rather than leave them as archetypes. The franchise did nothing with Luther after the first movie, until this one where he's an actual character again and not an exposition machine. Compare this movie to MI: 3 with its cardboard cut-out team, McQuarrie is on another level.

I love the small moments he gives his characters in the middle of action scenes, like Walker cursing when his weapon is out of ammo in the climactic chopper sequence. Just small moments like that sprinkled throughout the movie make a difference.

I also found it intriguing that Hunt had several moments where he could have let innocents die to maintain his cover but didn't. If he did, it would make him a compelling tragic figure that you see in the genre, but then again, him going out of his way to never allow an innocent to die is also admirable too. The movie could have gone in either direction and still been a compelling character study.

Lastly, count me as another frustrated trailer viewer disgruntled that scenes didn't make the final cut, like that insane shot of Hunt steering his chopper directly at a truck!
I think it was interesting (and correct me if I'm wrong) that Ilsa was willing to potentially let Benji die to subdue Lane, while Ethan probably would have let him go and gone right for Benji when he was hanging.

Lane probably wouldn't have gone away (he was quite content to die), he'd have gotten up and tried to kill them, I think. So arguably that was Ilsa knowing it's not safe to go help until he was knocked out.

You know I am remembering more scenes from the trailer I don't recall ever being in the film.

The blood dripping off barb wired fence.
Ilse walking past a bullet riddled jeep with bodies.
Ethan approaching the bunker door.

Am I completly blanking on those or did anyone else notice?

It also looked like Ethan was originally going to swing from a rope in the club scene, there's like a split second of it in one of the trailers.

I don't remember seeing the bit where the helicopter is going to collide with a truck either.

The director is on record saying that they write and edit the movies around the stunts, so there's plenty of footage that they shot, submitted to marketing for trailer cutting, but that story beat likely just never made it into the final story edit.

When Ethan talks about "I'll figure it out" every time they get into an impossible situation, that's also the director/screenwriter telling the crew "I'll figure it out".

It's not an uncommon practice. Movies shot like this tend to have trailers featuring scenes that don't make it into the final cut. It's been a while, but I remember a similar discussion surrounding Iron Man 2's trailers.

Can everybody finally agree now that short hair Cruise is best Cruise?

I'm not super crazy about this franchise, but I thought Fallout was pretty good. Might be my favorite.

I still feel like after a couple weeks, I'll remember nothing about the movie except 1-2 setpieces. I have a similiar experience with every MI film.

Am I the only one that purposely looks away from the screen during the intro sequence to stay unspoiled?

I love the MI movies, but hate the tradition of the stupid 'lets show you glimpses of different things you'll see later in the film."

I didn't look a way but I kind of zoned out intentionally so I didn't absorb it too hard.

This movie has such a wide breadth of amazing moments:

Nuclear attack fake-out --> HALO jump --> Party scene --> Bathroom fight --> Heist planning / execution --> truck chase --> motorcycle chase --> Ethan / Ilsa walk meet in the woods --> Walker / Lane fakeout --> Bomb sequence --> Helicopter chase --> Rock climbing

But everyone's completely right on the sound mixing and soundtrack - having now seen the movie twice, they're so damned good. Especially while they were setting up the Lane kidnapping - the fast-paced drums synced up with the helicopter rotor sounds! Such a cool detail.

I also loved how the movie handled Julia. From her instant willingness to help Luther, to her speech at the end. What an awesome way to give her agency and purpose even though she was a relatively minor character in the movie. She completely existed outside the fact that she was Ethan's wife.

So many movies which exhibit boring sexist tropes can learn a lot from how Fallout handled Julia.

I thought the movie was good, thought it started with high energy and dragged a bit near the end. I would have been happy with half an hour less.

The random bathroom guy was badass, pity he only got the one fight.

Ethan Hunt is basically Batman now.

I miss the simplicity of the original film. Everything since has gone further in the direction of turning the character into an all-powerful superhero. I caught up with Rogue Nation last night and Baldwin's character declares Hunt the sole savior of the planet. It's insane.

Entertaining movies, but there's something troubling about the latest films' commentaries on global law enforcement, accountability, etc., especially when characters raise concerns about the IMF's actions and then everything works out and the critics suddenly forget all their concerns.

Just got out of it.

I highly enjoyed it, but I gotta say...

The main conflict of the movie is straight out of the fourth movie hahaha

Can everybody finally agree now that short hair Cruise is best Cruise?

Especially at his current age yeah.

For some reason, long hair makes him look like a sleaze during action scenes.

So I'm the only one that missed Renner?

That said, the cast was pretty stacked with characters already. Maybe Renner can take over as head of IMF.

Saw the movie and loved it. Great action all the way through. That bathroom fight !

I would like to see the next movie(s) focus on a "normal" IMF mission. The whole mole, agent double cross, triple cross, working for the other side is a bit played out now.

Also, it's getting really annoying seeing these trailers with awesome scenes, only for said scenes to not be in the film. If your going to hook people with that, keep it in the actual movie!

It is comical that Ethan is always getting framed but I think quadruple-crossing mole agents is a "normal" IMF mission. They're a wacky bunch.

I was actually relieved that he wasn't in there. I found his character to be the worst part of the last two movies, even though I loved both films, he was the weak link for me. Glad to have Luther & Benji as the main sidekicks, and Alec Baldwin as the "but the mission is impossible" suit character.

I had the same thought that Renner would probably take over as head of IMF in the next film.

There's a sequence halfway thru which is the epitome of the Tom Cruise run. There is no way he can ever top that sequence. Like... It's the run. He's just running full out for ten minutes, there's parkour and shit, emotional stakes, they got everything.

Probably the best action film of the year. Tom Cruise is fucking bonkers for doing some of that shit. Cast, story, cinematography, everything be firing on full cylinders.

He also does that thing where someone's following him and he disappears several times like he's hiding but then he appears right in front of them.

The run was insane and I couldn't stop talking about it after the movie. He's over 50. He is fitter than most people in their 20s. The insensity of the run is something CGI or stunt doubles can never capture. Just crazy.

Lorne Balfe working on this for the music was super appropriate by the way and he did a good job. To the point where I don't miss Giacchino that much anymore, barring his Julia motif.

So I'm the only one that missed Renner?

Woulda been heavier if he got offed instead of Baldwin to be honest.
