May I suggest one I am a part of? [if it's not allowed, I will remove it]

I make videos for Famicom Dojo. We have been doing this for over 10 years. Most of them are informative videos, but there are lots of different types and to the OP, there is a podcast as well.

For example, her is one we did about the Famicom Data Recorder:

Many years ago, when I decided to check out what "podcasts" were all about, one of the first I started to follow was 4cr, and I loved your "Rebel in Japan" segments :)

mrbtongue is the ultimate youtube channel for gaming and all things nerd culture.

the first video he uploaded in a year was 4 months ago tho, not very active.

in any case, its very much worth it to go there and binge on all of his videos.

Always loved this channel. Too bad it isn't as active as it used to.

I'm seconding My Life in Gaming, they go very in depth with how best to play/emulate previous platforms, as well as explaining the best games for that system.

For those of you who understand Spanish, you should check out Scanliner. His Rockstar series is just unbelievable.

For 'essays' I'd recommend these
GVMERS - Great videos about cancelled games and dead series
Raycevick - I like the X Years Later videos the most, but his other videos are good as well
Digital Foundry (mostly Retro series) - Analysis are good, but my favorite gaming related content on youtube is the story of their creation and history behind them and Retro is one of the best series for this
NakeyJakey - Funny and original content about things that don't get much attention

For shits and giggles I watch Funhaus

Cool Ghosts is a great channel by Matt Lees and Quintin Smith. It doesn't get many mentions over here but I just love it.

The thing is, the channel is updated very infrequently lately. It's still worth the effort as no one is doing anything like this:

Cool Ghosts is rad as fuck, I second this.

brazil, unfortunately
Shameless self-promo and all that, but I humbly submit my channel for your enjoyment. I found my groove doing a series called "My Favorite Games" where I basically pick games I really enjoy from any era and I talk about where I was when they came out and why I love them. Recently, I've also begun looking at old issues of PSM Magazine, starting with the first issue in September 1997. You get to look at every page with me as I call things out or reminisce a bit, then I link to a video of one of the games I played from each issue. I'm only up to issue #5 right now, but I'm working on this at my own pace and trying to at least do a new one every month. I have issues all the way up to 2001 so I plan on trucking along until I've gone through all of them.

If its not what you're looking for, that's cool but I wanted to share.

nice job.

Most of the ones I'd have posted have been linked, I'd like to add to them Lorerunner. He does ruminations every friday that usually cover games, occasionally movies, where he goes really in depth with his thoughts about it (he also covers Star Trek episodes on other days if you're into those). He's also on Twitch where he sometimes does "loreruns" where he covers a game in depth discussing its lore. These are his two channels: YouTube Twitch Archives

Not sure if they really fall under what you're looking for exactly, but I love Danny O'dwyer's Noclip and Drew Scanlon's Cloth Map. Cloth Map is still ramping up w/ output, but Noclip has been on fire.

No one mentions him very often but Nostalgia Need is brilliant if you are after British centric videos.

Reycevick and GVMERS are the highest quality gaming documentaries on YouTube. Also helps that GVMERS have the best voice over guy in the Industry

I second Game Sack for (mostly) retro goodness. It can be cheesy, but they seem self-aware enough.

Whilst i'm not a fan of lists as videos, I enjoy most of Outside Xbox/Outside Xtra. Again, quite cheesy at times, and they only seem to cite like 5 games for their lists, but good production and quite fun. And they're British and Jane is awesome.

OutsideXbox and OutsideXtra are both fan-tas-tic, I love them so much. So consistently funny and positive, no drama or outrage just happy people celebrating a fun hobby. Their live D&D stuff is downright hysterical too.

Wait, Matt starting checking games again? OMG! I didn't know. I need to check those videos now, always loved his weird quirky humor

Also, somoene already mentioned Gaming Historian and Raycevik, those are also cool. I would also mention Matthewmatosis. I love his long videos.

One that I almost never seen anyone mention is Strafefox/Splash Wave.

Retro, mostly Sega, focused game mini documentaries with INCREDIBLY high production values and gorgeous visuals! Dude has been making really quality stuff for almost a decade now and has just now finally started building a small audience.

The Making of Streets of Rage 2

I enjoy MetalJesusRocks. Not really because I'm a huge fan of the content, but I can tell the dude really genuinely enjoys making his videos. I like watching collectors show off their stuff.

I also enjoy The Completionst and his schtick. I don't really laugh at the jokes, but it's a different take on game reviewing that I appreciate .

Been mentioned a couple times, but Matthewmatosis is next level. He's been putting out some more content lately than he usually does.

Holy crow, what a bunch of channels. I thank the guys that posted some of non english or spanish speaking, but brasilian or german (for saying something) with closed captions doesnt goes well with my gaming habits.

How can you focus while playing with a YouTube video going on? How are you going to hear the in game music and the dialogue?

Mainly, games where sound design isn't very important, and are games i've input a lot of hours and know a lot, like as i said, Overwatch and Binding of ISaac...

Shadiversity does some great videos where he looks at games through history perspective and talks about things they got right/wrong, as well as just "trying" to build/make game objects in real life and finding out how they may or may not work. It's not always gaming videos, he does historical videos and movies, etc as well. He's quite up beat in his videos which makes it fun to watch, if you like history you will probably like it.

ACG , great reviews but I really enjoy his "walking the walk" videos where he basically takes a deep dive into the game and the technology and details that it has, graphics, sound, gameplay mechanics, etc.

Larry Bundy Jr, does great videos based on gaming history and obscure things throughout gaming history.

My thanks for mentioning the Walking the Walk videos. Those don't do as well as reviews of course. But its been crazy seeing devs from the game talk about them, and fans sort of dig that kind of approach. I wasn't sure how it would go.
