BOTW : I defeated Ganon but there were still a lots of shrines and other secrets to discover.
I learned the hard way that you can't have more than one save with the same account :(

Not quite a save file glitch, but I didn't finish Metal Gear Solid 1 until around 8 or 9 years ago, despite playing it to death on PS1. There was a scratch on the disk which made it impossible to get past the fight with Rex at the end. The game would just keep loading forever at this point. I did finally complete the game when I finally bought it on PS3 though.

Oh a whole lot of SNES RPGs when I was heavy into emulation.

Total noob, didn't realize that changing directories also changed the path to saves.
Breath of Fire, Chrono Trigger, Tales of Phantasia, Terranigma, and more all lost.

At least Chrono being on Steam gives me a incentive try again.

Pokémon Silver back in the day, when my younger brother had started a new game without telling. I was mad.

My Titanfall 2 save kept coming up missing, so I gave up. For whatever reason, it kept starting me at the beginning of the first level.

Demon Souls. I had beaten several bosses but I just really didn't want to start over again after losing so much progress.

I did half the shrines in Breath of the Wild and 3 of the divine beasts, and like one of the memories, then I let my boyfriend create a new save file thinking there is more than one and it erased my progress.

Worked out for the best though as I waited for all the DLC to come out before starting again and I'm currently playing through the champions ballad DLC and have completed the master sword trials and all the divine beasts. Really enjoying it more than I did the first time with the extra added content

I don't know if this counts but Front Mission 3, 40 hours in and it won't load from my save file. I still have it but considering the disc cannot be read up to that point of the game, I just gave up.

Banjo-Tooie on the N64 a few months ago, played up to Terrydactyland (which is about 2/3rds of the way through the game? Maybe?) and the battery save failed and wiped my whole save. Never bothered returning to it since then.

Once played an entire day of Dead Island on my day off. 10 straight hours. Must not have saved, because I lost all that progress.

Wasn't a fan of the game as it was, that was enough to get me to drop it completely.

Snake Pass. My nephew was messing around and accidentally cleared my save file. I think I was on the last world, and just haven't had the desire to reply all the way back to that point, though I probably will at some point.

I had 168% on DKC:TF

My then 3,5 year old son saved over it with a save on the very first level. I cried. There was just no way I was ever going to get that back..

With that said, I've bought it again for the Switch and in my long term plans - I will get that 200%

I have up on the entire Metal Gear Solid franchise after foolishly saving my game near the end with no ammo, rations or whatever during some chase sequence or something. I don't remember the specifics and I know it isn't exactly what the thread is about but it still fucking soured me.

No Man Sky
The Witcher 3 finished all but wanted to plat the game (reason why i didn't begin a NG+)
Demons Souls NG++

Aside from DemonsS which is copy protected fuckery. I lost all my saves on the PS4 because the backup method corrupted them

Zelda: Wind Waker

Was playing it at my cousin's place and one of them pulled the memory card (REMEMBER THOSE?!) out as a joke and it corrupted my save file. I was at the part where you have to sail around and find the pieces of the triforce. I remember it being annoying and I was on the last piece. After that I said screw the game and never went back.

Witcher 2. Decided I was bad enough to handle the perma-death mode. I was taking screenshots in front of some fire to look badass. The fire spread and I caught fire and died. Didn't return back to the game for a long while.

Grand Theft Auto IV - thanks, GFWL

Sleeping Dogs - thought it used Steam cloud. It doesn't. Lost everything when I reinstalled windows.

Grand Theft Auto V - same as Sleeping Dogs. I do intend to go back to this one, one of these days though.

Blue Dragon and Dark Souls. Was about 60 hours in both games, near the end of Blue Dragon, and accidentally deleted all the save files on my 360 like an idiot.

I didn't give up on it, but my little sister deleted a ton of saves off of my PS2 memory card one day, one of them being Final Fantasy X. That was my first JRPG & it stung badly, but I eventually got back to where I was in the game.

Dark Souls 1. Made it through Anor Londo and was going up against Nito and my savedata got deleted, so I quit for a while, finished Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3, then came back to 1

I had lost my 3DS while a good third the way into Devil Survivor Overclocked, that was 5 years ago. I'm thinking of finally starting it up again now.

Demon's Souls, but the crash that corrupted my save happened after I had beaten the game and was working on getting the Platinum. Took the wind out of me sails, it did.

Bully Scholarship Edition. My 30 hour game got a game breaking glitch. It's too bad. I very much enjoyed the game otherwise.

My PC HDD bit the dust and I lost my saves for the Witcher 1 and Dragon Age 1. I was probably about 3/4 of the way through both games and I've never gone back.

Child of Light for me. The game crashed literally as I entered into the last boss, and the save corrupted. I still have not gone back to it, 4+ years later.

My Persona 5 platinum
Lost 110 hours, was already well into my second playthrough when IT happened.
Definitely gonna try and platinum it at some point, but I am still heartbroken by this
And it happened in like September. A PS4 update corrupted all my savefiles

I continued my game in Catherine one night on my One X after getting it on sale about a week prior. I was already about 4 hours into the game, and played for about a solid 2.5 hours. We got some breaking news that I needed to make sure my writers had covered (Shenmue I & II HD), so I pressed the Xbox home button and returned to the dash before running down to my laptop, assuming that this would act like a normal Xbox One or Switch game and just chill there in a sleep state.

Welp... about 15 minutes later I come back and hit the Catherine icon, and it boots up the game fresh. 2.5 hours of climbing and puzzle solving (and checking my cell phone) gone. Literally out loud I said "Well, I'll never finish that game."

I have gone back to it since, but it was so frustrating. I learned a valuable lesson about Xbox 360 games and suspend states though.

LA Noire. Made it to vice, clenching my teeth at how much I hated this game. Then my Steam drive dies, taking out the game. Reinstall, and then realize it doesn't do cloud saves? FUCK THIS SHIT.

Wasn't angry though, I didn't like the game anyway.

I fucked around & deleted my Gravity Rush Remastered save sometime last year. Think I was around halfway through the story.

Haven't touched it since.

Final Fantasy 5 on the GBA. I accidentally overwrote my own save file.

I was at the end of the game too... Honestly though, I didn't care too much. I didn't really care for FF5.

I almost stopped playing The Last of Us when I played it for 17 hours on launch day and wanted to exit it. Upon doing so I could see that the autosave appeared greyed out and stuck. I thought it couldn't be a glitch so I went on to exit anyway. Immediately afterwards I realized it had been glitched that whole time and I would have to play it all over again and inquiries on Twitter confirmed that there was a game breaking save glitch in the day 1 build and ND worked hard to fix it.

My external Wii U hard drive broke last year (literally a hardware failure, rendering the disk unreadable unless I opt for a costly and risky recovery method that would cost several hundreds of euros with no guarantee of full recovery due to the very specific formatting needed for the Wii U).

I lost everything. My Wii U is dead since, I am still mourning.

120+ hours in Xenoblade X, with me just starting chapter 8 (I loved mucking around, story progression came last for me in this game). I had 4 mechs.
80+ hours in Zelda, I never bothered to go to Ganon's castle, and I guess now I never will.
Completed save file in Tokyo Mirage Sessions, waiting for me to return to New Game+! I mean NOT waiting for me anymore.
Mario Kart 8 with even the gold tires unlocked already.

Worst of all, because absolutely irrepairable (unless hacking with a game shark or whatever): My Wii mode save file from The Last Story with all weapons from the now completely defunct online multiplayer unlocked.

I can't go back at all. Every time I boot up the Wii U and my home menu is just EMPTY because everything from my hard drive is gone, I immediately turn it off again.
My 400+ hour Splatoon save is still there at least. But yeah, haven't touched my Wii U since. I can't.

There was a glitch during the first week of release that could delete your save file. I was 10 minutes from the end of the game and got the glitch. I just watched the end on YouTube and never touched it again. I lost "only" 6-8 hours of progress but I almost never replay games and the thought of all that wasted time soured me on the experience.

Little King's Story (Wii). I forget how many hours, but I was invested. I really liked it, but the loss (my son accidentally overwrote it) halted my stamina. Was a very charming and enjoyable game, though.

Super Meat Boy. I uninstalled it, I thought it had Steam Cloud saves support. :((((((((((((((((((((((

To be fair, every game I had on steam at the moment used steam cloud so that came to me as a surprise. :((((((((((((
