I have several things I absolutely always do in games. Expecially JRPG's drag out my gaming hoarding compulsion. For example, I really need to fill out my inventory. Limited inventory space is a saving me (games where you can only carry so much of certain items), because when I play Final Fantasy, I need these 99 potions. I know I never use them but I really need it.

Another thing I do: keep one type of every weapon. Most RPG's you can sell your older weapon and get some cash for them to lower the costs of new weaponms and armor. However, I'm always afraid the gear comes in handy later in the game. Plus, a game never feels 100% complete if I don't own all the gear in the game if it's possible to obtain it all of course.

So what are your gaming compulsions, stuff you absolutely need, want, and have to do every game you play?

Mod edit: Removed unintentionally insensitivity.

I wish they'd tick over to 100 rather than sticking on 99 because 99 is an odd number.

If I'm playing an RPG and the dungeon splits into multiple paths, as soon as I figure out that I chose the "right" path I immediately back-track and check the branch-offs I missed.

I get particularly antsy about the frequent misuse/abuse of the term OCD in gaming.

Well, my OCD is more along the lines about collecting, I try to only get games if they're CIB and if they aren't Greatest Hits/Platinum Hits, etc. I have re-purchased a fair bit of my games throughout the years as I've become more obsessed with it.

I think I used to not care about numbers in the past but recently I can't stand numbers like 4 and 6 for some reason.. it's annoying me.

yep. it's a mental disorder. there is a big difference between slightly annoyed by something and having a mental disorder. i can't stand people who misuse OCD. hmm maybe i'm wrong and your life is seriously affected just because something ticks you off in a video game. people struggle with OCD every day and it's not fair that a lot of people claim to have it when they don't.

In fire emblem. I would sell any item in my convoy that didn't have its max durability.

So if a killing Edge had 19/20. I would sell it, if none of my characters had room for it....yeah lol.

Also in Xenoblade (or any game that lest you choose a party). My party has to be Rex, Nia and then Mòrag. Because that's the order in which you recruit them.
In Final Fantasy VII it was always Cloud, Tifa, then Red XIII or Yuffie. Or Cloud, Barret then Tifa.

Saving at least twice every.single.time just because I'm never sure. I don't think I've ever saved once and called it there.

It was 99 Rare Candies in Pokemon. Also, yeah, I save multiple times, even if I go to Load a save and notice my first one logged - I will still save once more.

I have a minor form of OCD (need to obsessively put objects straight and parallel to each other, can't stand if something hangs slighty off), but I don't mind if people use the term OCD for this. It gets the message across and you don't need to explain it unnecessarely long.

In terms of games, I also have a thing with inventories. In stuff like MMO's or Deus Ex, where to can sort your inventory, I spent way too much time tidying everything up.

Yep this.

Also when i sell items in games, i always sell enough to make even numbers.

Say i have 47 of a rare item and i need money. Ill sell 7 just to get it too 40. Or if its 108, ill sell 48

Multiple save slots cuz what if something fucks up, but also save before every little thing.

Notifications, get em out. Anything new that's higlighted, I need to check it and make sure the notification is gone.

And of course never use items in character action games, cuz you know then you gotta restart

All the things on the map need to disappear! Every last box needs to be checked off.

3.000.000 random things to collect without any real value? Hold my beer while I get on that.

The explore every path and going back and forth a million times to find out what the main path is so I can go the other way is also very recognizable.

Games like Skyrim with endless random quests are the bane of my existence btw.

When having in game counters (items, stats, etc) I have developed a certain preference for the numbers. Ending in a 5 or 0 is the best. Afterwards come 3 and 7, which are good. Then 2, 4, 6 and 8 being alright if I can't help it. I always try to avoid 1 and 9, except if 99 is the max.

I would have games where I'd never use items, but I got past that.

Constantly reloading guns in shooters. I pretty much reload after every kill even if i'm in the middle of a fight.

Just because it's a mental disorder doesn't mean people don't experience it in slight ways. There is no black and white with mental health, and conditions like OCD are defined on a scale.

Don't get me wrong, I understand how it can be insensitive to joke about one's "OCD", but it can still be very real in a huge number of people.

I save over and over just to make sure I saved.... lol.

I know that doesn't make sense. But I do.

I know this isn't exactly what OP means, but still ocd related...BoTW was driving me nuts at the end because I maxed out the hearts instead of stamina and even after getting all the shrines they weren't even/both maxed out...holy cow that was driving me crazy lol

Related: I like having at least double digits of every item in an rpg.

Missables. I stopped playing God of War after finding out I permanently missed a bestiary entry.

The only way I can overcome this is if I know there's still some crazy way to get the missable item/entry, like letting the clock roll over in FFIX to get the Excalibur 2 lol

But yeah RPGs tend to have the most missables and I usually do a lot of research into them before even starting.

Some of you would not like watching my play rpgs. I walk right past doors. Walk around with partial hp and mp. I wasn't always like that, tho.

I tend stock up on skill points instead of using them to upgrade, I don't want to pick wrong tree upgrades so unless required to progress. I tend to end up with so many by the end of the game.

Just to be clear:

It was never my intention to belittle people with OCD, to belittle the condition itself or to make fun of it. I thought the OP would be clear enough to what this topic is about. But I guess not.

Multiple save slots or save at least twice every time to make sure the game is saved. Try to save as many restorative/status healing items as possible only to have them serve absolutely no purpose in late game; same goes with attack items that would help tremendously early on but weak in late game.

Can you have the title changed? Just to something less insensitive. I know you had no intention of it, but it would be thoughtful to do so.

I've lost meaning of the words "optional content" in my internal dictionary.
Makes a lot of open-world games very challenging to get through.

Collecting everything is also a big one, but I honestly enjoy doing that. Most of the time.

I've got a huge problem with RPG's with a static level system. I want to do every sidequest and then outlevel the main quest and the supposedly epic fight becomes trivial. And them I'm dissapointed of course. But I keep doing it...

I get what you are referring to with OCD.

But as a person that has to video record everything (electrical outlets, windows, stove, refrigerator etc etc) before leaving my home and looking at my alarm clock for 10 minutes straight because as soon as I look away, I don't trust my memory of turning the alarm on, I get a little bit frustrated by the way people think OCD works.

I gotta have at least one of every piece of equipment. Armor, weapons, etc. I also have to have the maximum number of health potions.

I'm constantly backing up my save files. Just in case something happens.

I have to check every nook and cranny. I'm always afraid that I'm gonna miss something.

I'm sure there are other things that I can't think of at the moment.
