Games been out for a year to practically universal acclaim. This design has gotten a spot in both Mario Kart and Smash Bros. Is this something you'd like to see them stick with in future Zeldas, even though you could wear anything or nothing in BotW.

iu

I just NOW realized that the design on his shirt is supposed to look like the Master Sword.

The color might change in future iterations. But I could see the hat being dead for a while. As graphics advance, the hat looks stupider and stupider.

Problem is that "a hero garbed in green" is woven so deeply into the mythos and legends. Even the associations with courage and Faron are connected with green. I much prefer the games that stick to the traditional Triforce lore, but I guess if they keep drifting from that as in BotW then they can do whatever they want with Link.

Since we have like 4 threads on this, I'll just say it just baffles me that people are looking at the image and OP and thinking "oh yeah, that stumpy, oddly proportioned facial feature Link with bad hair and messy outfit is the best Link design of all time."

Out of all these guys...

Eww no. Either go with a new design in the next game. Or keep the traditional green. Keeping with the blue seems to be missing the whole "Customise your look" thing the last Zelda have.

And Green looks leagues better anyway.

I mean isn't this what they always do? Whenever a new Smash comes out, it usually features the Link from the most recent entry from the Zelda series.
Yes exactly. This is nothing new and this thread is just reaching really. Whenever the next Zelda and smash game come out we'll see Link updated to match that version as well.

The hat is iconic but it's also old af. Not modern anymore. It's not vintage or classic, just old.

I hope there's a happy medium. I loved BotW, but I have next to no desire to ever replay it. It's way to long/big.

I doubt it'll be his set design going forward. Link's design always changes in each game and the classic tunic design just so happens to look awful in BOTW's engine.

They'll probably continue to change it up however they wish in future games, be it a variant of the classic green tunic, his BOTW garb or something else.

Champion's Tunic made sense because he was the chosen champion among a group of 5, all with similar clothing. Link having this look again in a future installment with a different setting would be weird, so no. I don't think it should be default. I also don't think it should go back to the Green Tunic though, keep innovating and changing things up.

Innovate through gameplay - keep the tunic AND the hat. Keep it out of the story until near the end of the game if you must, but I love all the lore around it and want it to stay.

Thank god they moved away from it. There wasn't a single design worth saving in that game. ALBW Zelda in smash almost made me tear up, she had more expression and personality in one screenshot of the game than a decade of her being in smash.

100% agree, the way she emotes is fantastic and she just looks like such a bright, cheerful, and fun character. It's such a welcome change from boorish Twilight Princess stuff (and I liked Twilight Princess, a lot!).

The blue tunic can still be optional, the point is for him to still have a NEW consistent iconography. Sure, he can wear a dress in the next game, but you still need a default to put on the box. I'm anticipating that to be the blue tunic.
I'm confused as to why he needs a consistent look.

Give him a new look to suit each game. Green, blue, red, yellow, a suit of armor, whatever. A good design is a good design and he'll still be recognisable as Link.

I think there is still a good bit of room to maneuver in while giving him a green tunic. I don't even need the hat, but to boil down character design to just a shirt (which you aren't doing but I think others are) is a bit silly.

Yes.
The Champion light blue color is really great looking.

Even with a new design to the Green Tunic in BOTW, it still looks bad in modern time.

Of course, if we are talking about the darker green Twilight outfit with chainmail and leather then it would've been a harder choice between the Champion and it.

As someone who has never played a single Zelda game yet, the old design was lame. The new one is great though.

I would expect that they keep iterating his design for each new entry, perhaps not if they were to make a direct sequel to BotW (which would be unusual). Link and Hyrule does look better than ever though.

Why are you assuming they will keep using the blue tunic for Link in the next games? Maybe he'll rock some red garbs next time we see him

I like both designs but I think the original look is iconic, like Mario. The option to wear it should always be in the game.

I changed the outfit in BOTW as soon as I could, so I have very little connection to it. Seeing it treated as the new default feels odd to me.

Either go for another brand new design, or back to green.

I'm actually not a big fan of games these days just dumping loads of different outfits on us. I get that people like customization, but I'd much rather have one standard look, maybe with slight variations here and there. I never use any of the different outfits in BotW, just the ones with the best general stats. Most of them look horrible anyway I don't think I've even used the champions tunic for longer than a few minutes.

We will have agree to disagree.

Breath of the Wild is better game than Twilight Princess, no question there. Now it comes to Art Style, Twilight Princess is just on another level. It's not just Link but that dark atmosphere, nearly gothic, stills the shows.

I really hope Nintendo returns that darker tone that was around well before the Dark Souks games.

I mean it won't be that exact outfit, but I expect hatless Link with a blue-colored tunic to be the typical look for 3D Link going forward. The traditional design will still live on in the top-down games.

I'd be good with a return to OoT Link too, if that ever happens.

The next Smash having Blue Link, Toon Link and OoT Young Link will be awesome!

New design for each game with a new Green Tunic being attainable in game is the way forward.

The way BoTW went.

I prefer the champion's tunic look regardless, but if the hood was available in Smash, there'd be no contest. That hood is heavenly

I'd be okay with this. I'm open to more shakeups

I associate the Champion's Tunic more with WW Link's pajamas than BotW itself

If there was any justice in this world the Hyrule Warriors looks would become default for everyone
