This sounds like the reddit post of a rambling poster trying to "fix videogames". But it's a man actually about to waste millions upon millions of rubles actually doing it.

Uhhhh ok, so the 7/10 bit is like 47 minutes into the video and it's even more wild to actually hear him talk about it.

They don't seem to have any understanding of how games are made? They don't seem to have any understanding how games are made. I skimmed a bit beforehand while trying to find it and the way they talk wanting emails of game submissions sounds sort of like they want pitches, but I guess it's more that they want finished games? Because then they talk about wanting strict quality control and probably only 10/1000 e-mails making it, etc. And just...

Who in the world would develop for a platform that could so easily arbitrarily reject them right at the end?

Oh, but don't worry, if you're at least at a 5 or a 6, they might work with you to improve the game. His example is... if the graphics are bad, they could try to get you connected to a different artist. Because I'm sure that would go over well with your team members...

Meanwhile, immediately before this he talks about wanting to build a community to help people make games... but he compares it to Fiver. The idea being people can form a team and make a game even if they only have design ideas by getting other team members that way and like... on a team that small, for the small amount of money you'd surely be getting, is it really worth being bossed around by someone who's just an "ideas person" instead of making your own game? And his example is a 10 year old girl having an idea other 10 year old girls would also like and being able to act on it, which is a neat concept, but... I don't think a 10 year old can manage a team of professional adults or, uh, pay them.
This is hectic

Because developers go into development thinking, "yeah, we're definitely trying to aim for a 6/10 game."
You jest, but there are a whole lot of indie developers who crap out games as quickly as possible to try and earn a few bucks. It happened big-time on OUYA, there were even non-developers posting in their forum asking how to easily make games so they could cash in on its popularity, and thousands of developers who didn't even have an OUYA to test their code on, just hoping it worked (which was extra annoying to those of us who had paid $700 to get an OUYA dev kit in time to test our games for launch)

Oh, I don't doubt that. But, I assume most serious developers go into a game hoping to make the best game possible. Then the realities of development hits and they get a 6-7/10.

I don't know about that. For instance, I am developing a 3D collectathon platformer, and considering even the makers of Banjo-Kazooie struggled with Yooka-Laylee to get above that range (PS4 version is at 68 metacritic), I have no illusions that our own B-K inspired game will get much better ratings. We do intend to make the best game we possibly could and think we do have some nice ideas in some of our levels, but realistically, even if we are 100% happy with the end result, it would be preposterous to assume to fare any better in reviews than Yooka.

This sounds like an idea from someone who doesn't know anything about how to make games who is about 14 years old. Replace my artists? Force a revisionist idea person onto a team? Developers are only about 1 in 10 gonna get on the console when they submit? Yeah fuck this. I make it my way with my folks. I wont be building anything for a console that I may never be allowed to release for without forcing someone else to take over our stuff.

Only 7 out of 10 games or better AND approximately 60 OG IntelliVision games? Isn't that contradictory?

You are mistaking things. What was said was they will only accept games onto their game store that are high enough quality that they would get like a 7/10 or higher in reviews. For the number of games, they said that aside from the old Intellivision games, the device will launch with 20 to 30 games, of which 7 to 10 will be included for free with the device.

The QC comment is laughable. They are going to have games developed and put infront of mock reviewers who rate the title highly (like Mock 7-8s) only to have the game release and actually average in the 4-5 range. I've seen this happen first hand. This concept of quality control will last 3 months before they realize how game development really works.

I think he's just overly excited and ambitious. I think in the end the rule will just be to not allow garbage games. If all games were 4-5 out of 10, that'd still be a better percentage than everything else :)

This sounds somehow even more stupid than the Coleco Chameleon. I didn't think it was actually possible.

There aren't even 7 Intellivision games that would grade a 7 out of 10, I'm not sure how they could judge other games

If Intellivision wants to get back in the console market, they might not want to be so restrictive. At least in my opinion.

I'm down, I love new hardware.

I bought a NGAGE, Ouya and a Vita so why not this.

All well and good but -- the question is -- did you buy the Amstrad GX4000!?!?!

IGN Article reiterating the majority of these points.

http://ca.ign.com/articles/2018/07/...llivision-reboot-console-controller-and-games

Perhaps more importantly, however, is what you won't see on the Intellivision:
  • Violent Games: "[If it's] violent, if it's not E for Everyone, then no it's not going on the console." Tallarico wants the console itself to be rated E for Everyone.
  • Complicated Games: "If you can't explain the game in 10 seconds, or if it needs a manual, it's not on our system."
  • 3D Games: "There's not going to be any 3D. We're not trying to compete with Nintendo. We're not trying to build the next Zelda.... We're not going to be creating 3D worlds."
Also confirms the color touch screen for the controller that was hinted at in Tallarico's livestream.

Haven't heard about Tallarico in years, crazy that this is where he landed, wonder how the audio will be on this system considering his presence.

I am so glad this exists. Everything about it is so perfect in its hysterical misguidedness it almost seems calculated.

I missed having a laughingstock like this so much, especially after the Phantom stopped getting headlines so many years ago. The Ouya wasn't nearly the same, it felt mean to make fun of it. But this? Zero fucks given, grab the popcorn and watch the slo-mo trainwreck.

This console will fail with that kind of strategy.

This console will fail with any strategy except perhaps "cut losses now, burn all design documents, pretend it was all a practical joke".

No ports? They should be happy anyone would put the time into porting to their DOA console.

There is a laundry list of things that won't be in the console:
- Ports.
- Games scoring less than 7/10.
- Violent games (as in, anything above E).
- Games that can't be explained in 10 seconds or require a manual.
- 3D games.
I have a feeling this is already longer than the list of individual, actual games that will exist for the console.

"So at Intellivision, we have a big white board in the office... I write on there 'hardcore gamer, casual gamer, 10-year-old girl, 40-year-old single mom, 70-year-old grandpa.' I put ages and creeds and colors and races and age groups and genders. We have this all on a big wall.

Fuck. All those years Nintendo spent trying to recapture the casual market, and all they had to do was to write groups on a white board. :(

Also:
"My mom, for example, has bought two video game consoles in her entire life. Christmas 1980, she bought Intellivision for the family. She also bought a Nintendo Wii for herself because she could see bowling all she had to do was move her arm."

Obviously the logical conclusion to the above is making a controller with no motion controls at all and a disc pad that was already outdated in 1985. Obviously!

WTF... that leaves major league baseball, advanced dungeons and dragons and microsurgeon out.

So there's a touchscreen component now, too? Glad to see them taking pages from other successful consoles like the Wii U.

Don't wanna get off topic, feel free to respond with a DM, but any public details on your game yet? I always keep an eye on this genre, especially ones that claim to be inspired by the Rareware OG.

On topic, this sounds like some disgruntled, hyperbolic, modern-game-hater's fantasy console. I hope they don't go radio silent though, I love a good train wreck.

...this feels like a console designed by fanboys in the most literal sense. A platform designed to appeal to only the most hardcore of enthusiasts and nobody else.

This console will fail with that kind of strategy.

"Fail" is probably going to be a too nice term to describe how this will perform. I will be amazed if this platform even surpasses one million in sales.
The only way anyone would design a console like this in 2018 (despite the company saying this console is targeted "basically for everyone, but gamers are the goal") is if this was a front for a money-laundering scheme or tax writeoff.

This is worse than Nintendo's draconian third party policies in the Yamauchi era (most notably the NES). It's like a spoof of that. It has to be a spoof and satire, right? This can't be real, can it?

Ironically, their stated goal is literally the opposite (everyone but hardcore gamers).

I'll be pretty shocked if it surpasses 10k, honestly. I mean, all things considered, if they sell more than 200k with this "pitch" I would consider it a resounding success.

They're actually saying that "everyone but gamers" are the goal. I don't blame you for parsing that in the only way it makes a modicum of sense, though. :D

So they want a platform of all exclusive games on a completely unproven platform with several major restrictions for design, content, and quality? Am I understanding this correctly? Are they offering to fund a bunch of teams or what?

I give him credit for not taking any money until its on shelves at least.

You know, I played an intellivision looking game called DOBOTONE over at GDC this year, and it had its own console with twisty knobs that would directly affect the game in real time. It was a total blast and was pretty damn amazing. That gives me a glimmer of hope as to what this could become.

Nothing about this sounds good or legit. 2D games would be indie. And who would give up the steam sales. They would have to finance everygame.

So, a games console designed to target all demographics...except those who play video games... And "the hook" is a redesign of that fugly disc-and-keypad controller... And there are strict, bizarre "requirements" for every game.... Much love, Tommy, but reading through this interview you've clearly gone off the deep end, lol.

Maybe this is the point though. As the article itself states, the original Intellivision was designed to complete with the Atari VCS (1979). Thirty years, later, it's a new type of battle: Which one of these "retro revivals" will be the bigger shitshow? The new Atari VCS, or the new Intellivision? Place your bets now.
I'm betting the Atari one.

I...What? How can they be making a console while seemingly knowing so little? That list doesn't make any sense.

Didn't think it was possible to bomb worse than the Ouya, but this sounds worse and worse as we get more info.
