Just bought a very high end machine (RTX 2080, i9, 32Gb RAM) but my PC monitor is only 27inch 1080p display. I could technically just plug it up to my 4k TV but I'm not sure if that's worth it? My thought is that games will run better on the 1080p monitor and because it's smaller than my 65inch 4k display I won't notice too much of a difference. I don't know maybe I'm just being lazy not wanting to lug the machine up and down the stairs (desk is upstairs, TV is downstairs). What about you guys? Do you play in with a higher resolution? Does anyone have a high end machine but play mostly is 1080p?

i used a 27" 1080p display for a while before switching to 1440p at the same size and the difference was pretty big. 1080p looks a bit rough above 24" if you are sitting close to it, imo

27 inch 1440p

Been for a long long time now. Gonna get another better one next year for desk gaming and whatever LG's top OLED is in 2021 for 4k.

My actual monitor I have my current (10 year old) gaming desktop is 1080p 23''.

My actual device I use for actual PC gaming (my 5 year old gaming laptop) is a 4k TV 75''.

When I get a new desktop rig, I will still be using my 75'' 4k TV.

Mine is 2160p and did use it at that for awhile but I swapped over to 1440p a few months ago since even with my 2060 I couldn't get a lot of games to run at 2160p and good FPS without really sacrificing graphics.

3840x2160. Even on a 27 inch monitor the difference is absolutely noticeable.

It can go up to 144Hz, but a lot of games don't reach that at 4K resolution. Thank god for G-Sync.

1440p is really just the perfect resolution for a desktop. It's so much more freeing for desktop usage, and works well for games too.

I've got 3 monitors.

1080p 24" 144Hz IPS
4K 27" 60Hz IP
32" VA 1440p 144Hz

I'm interested in 32" 144Hz IPS but seems like it is not happening any time soon. For gaming it's not that useful but I just like high refresh in desktop, it makes your PC feel faster and more responsive.

1440p 144Hz with a slightly smaller than most 24 inch screen. It's personal preference but I'd take high refresh rate over resolution every time.

24 inches 1080p. I still don't see a reason to upgrade, but I will most likely do so sometime next year.

A lot of 1440 fans here. Maybe I should look into that, I have literally never seen a 1440p screen.

I have a good machine but i'm still using a 24" 1080p g-sync monitor. I've been wanting to buy a 1440p ultra wide for like 2 years but they cost so damn much that I keep talking myself out of it.

2560x1080 27" on a 2060, don't really want to kill performance by going up on res but might buy the 32" version of the same ultra wide.

Good old 1080p60 - or I guess it's actually 1920x1200, since my main monitor is 16:10.
While I do enjoy the luxury of a dual monitor setup, I haven't upgraded them in forever. With my somewhat older processor (i5-4690) but newer graphics card (GTX 1070) games run very well at this resolution, even at high settings.
I've been thinking about upgrading my monitors for a while now, however. Not even primarily for the purpose of gaming, but rather for work.

I'm at 1080p 144 Hz. Imo, if I want something like 4k, I'll play on a big TV instead of a desktop monitor.

1920x1200. Love that 16:10 ratio. Sucks that some games are starting not to support it.

Thing is over 10 years old, but hey, it still works. Plus I'm rocking a gtx 670 4GB still anyway.

It's super nice, especially if you go with a 144hz screen. With a 2080 I can hit 60fps in pretty much all modern games. Ultra on most, but occasionally a few tweaks to ensure a solid frame-rate. Older or well optimized games really make use of 144hz. With a 2080 my PC has no issues playing modern Doom at 144hz.

Just be careful what size you get. I personally don't like anything larger than 27" at 1440p. If I remember correctly the pixel density is roughly the equivalent of a 21" 1080p screen.

EDIT: You can get a shield or something to stream to your TV. I've got a mesh wifi system with the modem and base unit by my PC, which has an Ethernet cable connected. Another hub is in the basement by my TV and has all my electronics with Ethernet cables hooked up to the hub. Gives a nice solid connection. Anything that's competitive online I play at my PC with a headset anyways.

Mostly play on my 1440p 144 Hz Gsync, I have a 4k on the side that I rarely game on.

I'm on that 1440p/144fps/gsync combo. It's godlike, especially for fast-paced/competitive games.

Just looked up the price of a 1440p monitor god damn maybe next year, lol

? They're not that expensive. Yeah, if you want high-end they can get a bit pricey, but you can easily find 1440p monitors for $200-300 USD.

My actual monitor is 1440p but I only use that for FFXIV and strategy games, the TV I use most of the time is 4k OLED

It's a PG279q. A 27 inches 165hz G-Sync monitor with 1440p resolution.
I don't plan to go "4K" anytime soon. If anything I'm impatient to enjoy this resolution even more in the next few years at its top framerate.

P.S. As we are vaguely in topic: what is the best suggested way to clean these sorts of monitors?
I'm constantly in fear of ruining the panel when I'm wiping it.

22" 1080p/60Hz from forever ago! Upgrading to a 27" feels like it's going to be almost too big but I'd really like to step up to 1440p/144Hz on the next upgrade sooooo...

I guess it's the context that I'm coming from having spent ~2k on the PC which was at the top of my budget.

1440p/144 on the monitor. I'll upgrade to 4k after the next wave or two of gpus.

Laptop, 15.6inch 1080p @ 240Hz.

I have LG OLED in my living room as well, but I gotta say, high refresh rate is slightly more my fancy.

1440p 144hz Gsync.

1440p is for the now the best compromise between resolution and fps.

So you're saying you play most games on the 4k TV unless it's FFXIV or strategy games? If so I was thinking of a similar strategy. Honestly I still want to play my console (one x) so I'm trying to figure when to play on what.

1080/144hz. Higher resolutions at 144hz are still out of my price range. Maybe in a couple years.

1080p, and I won't go higher in years to come. When I upgrade my PC I'll just get better visuals/fps instead :P

1440p. I find it the perfect sweet spot for higher resolution meets high framerates while pushing higher settings with my 1080ti. Hopefully by the next ti variant, we will be able to push higher framerates with RTX as well

Technically 1080p but I don't play games at my PC.

I steam them to my 4k oled and usually use resolutions higher than 1080p

32 in 1080p. Can't do above 60FPS, but it was about $200, so I can't complain.

If I could get a higher res monitor at the same size for the same price, I'd jump on it.
