I have nothing this gen, just redownload, may buy an external drive for PS5, not sure if there's an advantage if it is an SSD over an HDD if it just uses the USB port.

PC
I thought it wise to buy an SN750 for my future PC when it was on supersale on Amazon months and months ago. Now that's its regular price. Oh well.
Will probably keep using my old 525GB SATA SSD and 2TB SSHD until they crap out. It's free real estate.
Maybe next year I'll add one of them PCIe 4.0 SSDs. Possibly 2TB.

PS5
Perhaps it'll come with a 2TB drive by the time I might get one. If not I'd check Sony's compatibility list and get an additional 1TB whenever prices make sense and I feel I could use one. Wouldn't bother with an external drive. I'd just put that money into the thing that makes the games go instead. Of course you'll only get 1TB compared to like 12 or something, but I'm not a gamehog like that, and it just feels like an unideal compromise.

Well it might be an idea to just buy a 1TB SSD for £80 and put that incase a £7 enclosure? Much cheaper than these new cards.

Has sony confirmed the storage is upgradeable?

The storage itself isn't upgradable, but the total storage of the PS5 is expandable by adding another NVME PCIe-4 "Sony certified" SSD (for PS5 games) and external (SSD/HDD) for PS4 games, as told in the excerpts here from eurogamer: Inside Playstation 5

Ever since Mark Cerny first revealed the proprietary nature of the SSD, questions have been asked about expandable storage. What happens when you've filled your allocated 825GB of storage? Well, PlayStation 5 is backwards compatible - and you can save space by running your older games from standard external storage.

We've seen Microsoft's proprietary drives but Sony is sticking with its strategy of allowing users to buy off-the-shelf parts and fit them into the console themselves - so yes, NVMe PC drives will work in PlayStation 5. The only problem is that PC technology is significantly behind PS5. It'll take some time for the newer, PCIe 4.0-based drives with the bandwidth required to match Sony's spec to hit the market.
And then, Sony needs to validate them to ensure that they will work properly. The PS5 will have an NVMe slot, but drive compatibility will be paramount.

As you'll appreciate when you see the deep-dive presentation released today, there's a wealth of new information about Sony's next-generation console plans here, and that's before we go really in-depth with the information Mark Cerny shared with us beyond the content of today's presentation.

Typically only have 1-2 games installed at once. When I'm done with a game I'll uninstall and install a new one.

I plan on just hooking up a 4 TB external drive to the PS5 and hope its easy and fast to move between.

I'll just delete the games which I don't play currently and redownload them later if I'll feel like playing them again.
PSN downloads are slow but this seems like the easiest (and cheapest) option really.

Another option is to get an external SSD and use that to move games off PS5 to PC's HDD storage. But that's a bit of a hassle for no apparent gain.

Do we know what the expansion route is for the PS5 yet? Is there a second bay internally you can put a new SSD into, or do you have to replace the 825GB one?

If it's the first, I can get a 1TB SSD when there's one verified...but if it's the second, there's really no point spending that kind of money to get another 175GB of storage.

No strategy.
Outside of FFXIV (and THPS for when I have little time to kill) I only play SP games, so I just delete them once I finish them.
I usually keep a high profile one in the back that works as a wowzer for guests who are not into games (GOW, TLOU).
So unless things explode, I should be fine with 825GBs.

Archive Series X/PS5 games I'm not currently playing on an external and only keep games I intend on playing on the internal drives.

Large external drive on XSX in the office. Network transfers for games I don't want to delete but don't have space for on the XSX in the living room. I also have fast internet and unlimited bandwidth so I'm not that worried about re-downloading things.

Nothing special. I'll just keep a couple of games installed that I play and remove them when I'm playing something newer. I can always install an older game if I want to play it again. I don't really see a problem. I don't need to have everything installed at once and I usually play one game and move on to the next one. I don't play any online games that aren't Monster Hunter.

When my ssd gets full I will delete some games. Maybe in the future I will add an SSD to the ps5 but no need yet.

Can we get a breakdown of the advantages and disadvantages of having games installed on the default SSD/SSD-like drives vs regular external drives?

I've got a 4TB external drive on my PS4 and X1X, and plan to carry both over to the new consoles. I'll be keeping whatever current-gen games I'm going through on those drives while the newer stuff is installed internally.

Did they say what speed advantages a PS4/Xbox One game gets when installed on the internal drives? Is faster loading the only thing you'd lose out on playing it externally or are there are performance downgrades too?

Gonna just move my 4TB external I have hooked up to my PS4 over to my PS5 and I'll move games around as I need them. I'll buy a drive similar to that and do the same thing with my Series X when I get one.

For PC, moving to Ryzen 4XXX whenever it becomes available. Gonna throw the biggest pcie gen 4 ssd in the system I can and look at one of those expansion cards for m.2 shit and try and just load up on more storage there. My download speed however is generally big enough though to where if I have to redownload something then it's not a huge deal so I might not even worry about extra storage.
Will we have to reformat and re-download to use our current PS4 drives on PS5? Or can we easily switch back and forth.

Wondering if I need to get a new drive for PS5.

I guess we're calling it cold storage now. So yeah, 4tb external.

Nvme ssd maybe a year down the line.

Keep the default size. Don't buy games just to buy them. Play one or two games at most at a time, complete, delete and move on.

I'll stick with the base PS5 storage for a few months and then keep an eye on how the storage situation settles out. Should be fine with just uninstalling games here and there instead of keeping games on the drive that I'm not necessarily going to be playing anytime soon.

Same as current gen, except this time I'll use my existing usb drive for PS4 games.

Buy discs for SP games.
Buy digital for MP and indies.
Delete old games, delete disc installs first.

I might get a 2TB SSD many years from now, but if we can copy in/out of a usb drive it's just a luxury.

hold out for $200 2TB expansion drives

(More realistically, sell my launch consoles in a year to buy new 2TB models)

I'll keep the games on the system that I'm regularly playing, delete them when I'm done, and download new ones. There is no need to have 10+ games sitting on the HD.

SSD only. Preordered the 1TB SSD XSX card today.

Plan to do the same whenever the PS5 solution is revealed.

I am looking to get an 8TB external HDD to fit all of my PS4 and PS5 games on it.
I want to have everything locally on my drive.

No plan.

I had an external storage throughout the current generation, but never used it.

I play a game and move on to the next. This time, I will delete them.

everything not requiring internal ssd goes to External HDD, and everything not playing constantly also on HDD and changing back to SSD when needed

Two external drives on my X for all previous gen games. Series X enhanced and native games will go on the internal SSD until i eventually spend the money on that 1tb card.

Half the game I have installed I haven't touched in 18+ months. My strategy is to move them to cold storage. I also have 100Mbps internet so if I'm at work and feel like playing a different game tonight I'll just download it to my PS5.
