Realistically? I'd imagine restricted rights for women in terms of abortion, marriage, and domestic abuse/rape, a prominence of Christian-Judeo values in law, with a harsher attitude towards "bad" religions like Islam; this would be found in government and public schools mostly. Public schools would be underfunded in poor areas, minimum wage would be incredibly low if not nonexistent, social programs would be stripped down to their bones. I wouldn't imagine many POCs would feel comfortable living there, though I doubt those living there would have any representation in the government. A lot of pointless military spending at the cost of axing said social program, similar to what Boris Johnson is doing in the UK at the moment. Horrible neglecting of climate. And so on.

Would be interesting to see how the parties would form there, I assume there would be a party of Trump which would be borderline monarchical at this point due to his cult of personality, but their grip may not hold since there aren't as many opportunities to be a demagogue in a mostly homogenous population in terms of race and religion, so maybe the Jews would get some flack for being Jewish and pushed into the opposition party as well as any POCs willing to live there. There would be a lot more unfiltered populism and a tolerance for conspiracy theory as it is politically advantageous. To be fair, a lot of what the Framers warned our country of is exhibited by people like Trump, so if he is able to hold power then I'd expect democracy to slowly erode overtime unless they can get their shit together.

But yeah, I could see it slip into fascist rule easily. Getting flashbacks to the Weimar Republic from the whole situation with a party of Trump having that much control.

A fascist theocracy. Homosexuality criminalized. Abortion punishable by death. Full on Christian white nationalist virulently racist hell-hole. State-controlled news only. Schools would turn into bible camps. Constant misinformation about anything related to science. Millions dead when there's even a remotely deadly pandemic. Runaway environmental pollution and destruction.

Probably fuckin cops ticketing people on the street for dressing immorally.

I wouldn't put anything past that society. Any moderate Republicans would either be run out, keep quiet or decide they actually like this form of theocratic rule.

Republicanism is really only about achieving a straight, white Christian ethnostate. All other so-called principles that they hold are only in service to this ideal. For example, these fuckers would actually be happy to pay higher taxes to better their community's infrastructure and amenities. The only reason they're about low taxes now is because the thought of a black person in a public pool they helped pay for is completely offensive and untenable.

The real question is seeing how long they would last before they fucked around and found out regarding expansion, whether that expansion was through things like trade or for when they originally got restless in their own borders and felt the need to try and colonize some non-white folks (because racists can't just leave others alone). 50/50 they either get destroyed or perhaps get smart enough to hunker down into a NK-esque scenario and just stay in their misery for all eternity.

Why wouldn't it just look like America from earlier in the 20th century instead of something crazy like Handmaid's tale? The average adult back then would probably be considered far-right if you plopped them into our time.

Just in terms of medicine, since Republicans embrace anti-science & anti-vax ideals, it'd be a hell hole of disease with the revival of many ancient afflictions that vaccinations eliminated.
I don't think it's hyperbole to say that women would be little more than sex slaves, their bodily autonomy robbed from them en masse. Rape would basically be classed as a non criminal act or, at best, only people in the elite class would be free from consequences of committing it.
It would 100% be a police state rife with abuses of power & corruption as well as zero accountability.

Some would consider conservatism to be a lot more radical now. The Trump era was quite a bit different from the Reagan era.

Completely white with every POC either dead, enslaved or in jail. Every white person gets a free gun as soon as they're born and medical costs are triple what they are now to fund a military twice the size of our current one. Police are also a branch of the military.

There would be no middle class and people that aren't at the tops of corporations would be making the minimum wage of $3 an hour because anything more than that is socialism.

The air is full of smog because every environmental protection is unconstitutional.

Eventually it all falls apart because they run out of people to scapegoat and "other" and since everyone is armed the forever war comes home.

Without any non-white people they would find ways to make different types of white people non-white. That's the thing about whiteness, its always defined in relation to exclusion. "Mediterranean" people might be the first to get considered sub-white again
And the Catholics. And then Protestant and Evangelical beef.

Probably what Chicago is like but nationwide. Just more heavily segregated communities with heavy doses of gentrification in once "liberal" cities.

Conservatism is much more reactionary now than ever. The goal is to run in the complete opposite direction of anything proposed by liberals and progressives. Republicans will vote against their own policies if they get widespread support from Democrats. A modern Republican state / country would be built on the complete and total rejection of progressive policy and culture.

Similar to a North Korea or CCP in terms of the number of political prisoners, work camps, cultural genocide, isolationism, and state run media. I really think North Korea would be a perfect example of what the US might look like if the current GOP were able to take full control of every state and branch of government.

Yes, I know fictional character Ron Swanson isn't a Republican, but there's a lot of overlap in libertarianism and today's Republican party.

"We" whitewash and idealize past Americans and their time period, so yeah.

American history has been one long dystopian period, depending on your perspective. We're just trained to think through a straight white male perspective so American history isn't seen as destructively violent & inherently fascist as the plot of some tv shows

I think it would fall apart very quickly. The GOP bases their entire platform on white christian identity politics. The wealthy leaders use minorities and liberals to deflect from the fact that it's their own economic polices that don't work. They can argue theory all day long with folksy metaphorical tales about how trickle down will work, but the evidence is clear that it doesn't. Without that "other" to blame either the working class rides the train all the way to destitution or they eventually figure out the real root of their economic anxiety and remove them from power.

It would be an ultra capitalist country thats so capitalist they would self destruct. Infrastructure would fall apart in less than a generation and the rich folks would be so rich they dont care, and so you end up with a shithole country where the average person is poor but there are a few families that concentrate the wealth more and more. It would deteriorate until the US ends up as a third world country. Of course with many fascist elements too like state run media and concentration camps.

It's honestly easier to figure out what would happen if conservatives got what they wanted in America. Since their goal strives on a scapegoat, it's only a matter of time until they start a war with another country to take its resources and victimize its citizens. If they're all by themselves... my best guess is they whittle down to WASPs before they devolve into infighting due to lack of infrastructure and willing women until they run out of weapons and actually have to run a country.

Based on that, my people would've never made it out of Europe, well half my family at least. The other half would be living on the Long Island Jewish Reservation (that half came over in the 1700's).

Pretty much an impossible idea. No mono-partisan/mono-cultural secular democracy has ever really existed for very long. Even when we joke, "Look at Alabama..." it's not single-party like that. THe state government is largely dominated by Republicans, but individual city governments of places like Huntsville, Birmingham, or Mobile are largely Democratic or at least more evenly split. Nearly 40% of the state of Alabama voted for Joe Biden.

The closest single ideology state is probably Utah, but Utah doesn't even really break down the same as the national Republican party, largely because of the influence of Mormonism in Utah. A similarly, Biden actually won Salt Lake County in 2020, the first time a Democrat won that county since Lyndon Johnson nearly 60 years ago.

Countries like Poland and Turkey are among the most conservative for typical liberal, secular, democratic countries, but within both there is a lot of political division, though both have fairly conservative, populist ruling parties.

A lot of the small details in The Handmaid's Tale are based on real restrictions on women. It wasn't until 1993 that all 50 states made spousal rape illegal. Before 1979 most states specifically excluded spouses from rape charges. Unmarried women could not take the pill legally until 1972. Banks could deny women credit until 1972 and before the 1960's women could be denied checking accounts. It wasn't until 1983 that women could attend Columbia college.

The other more sinister stuff was based on the actions of various despotic regimes.

Margret Atwood talks about these influences in the interview below.

Nationalism would be taken to a whole new extreme:
  • Can't speak foreign languages in public
  • Anyone that is not Christian is shunned
  • It would probably harder to travel to the U.S. as a non-citizen
  • Everyone gets a gun license along with their birth certificate
  • Gay republicans would have to go back in the closet
  • They would probably start lynching black republicans now that they don't need their "African Americans over there"
