Summoning Salt and Karl Jobst are two of my favorite Youtubers when it comes to speedrun content so I thought I'd make a thread dedicated to their work. I watch their videos as soon as they come out so I'll try to keep this thread updated, stick around if you are interested! You are free to discuss and post videos of other Youtubers as well.

Here are a few videos of theirs that got me to love their content.

Always wondered how much influence Goldeneye had on inspiring speedrunning with how much of the games replay/completionist appeal involved built in time trials.

Two of my favourite channels to watch. Rwhitegoose makes good videos but unfortunately he has some far-right views.

Love Karl's narration and detailed videos, and Summoning Salt puts an incredible amount of work into his content.

So fascinating and inspiring to see the skill needed to pull off all this stuff.

I watched every Summoning Salt video multiple times. Choco Mountain is tied for his best with Blind Punchout. Definitely checking out this other speedrun historian if he's even half as good.

Also, it's like 2 Summoning Salt episodes are missing? The episode numbers jump and I don't remember what they were.

These videos are memorizingly entertaining and I find it kind of weird, like something's wrong with me. I should show one to some random person and see if they "get it". Like, the now legendary "parallel universes" Super Mario 64 video could probably appeal to anyone but it's so weird conceptually.

I never really cared too much for Chasm, but this was a fun video to watch, and made me respect the level a bit more.

I think the more you are into games, and speedrunning specifically, the more you appreciate what these guys do and it makes it super interesting. There's also a big nostalgia factor involved since I've played most of the games they've covered so far.

Speed Docs' Kirby Air Ride video is still my personal favorite. It's just such an incredible story of two communities a world apart pushing themselves and later each other to new heights.

As one of the comments puts it, Yokaze is like a modern day Prometheus.

I love videos like these. It's a shame that RWhitegoose is trying to get in on this genre of video. Glad to have been introduced to Karl though.

I'd also recommend Bismuth
Mostly very technical videos on SMB but I find them very interesting.

I never get tired of Karl saying "and then *player* achieved this run"

I've surprisingly never encountered this video and I watch a lot of speedrun content. Thanks!

For my contribution to the thread, I submit this!

As someone who does video editing, I can feel the heartbreak of this popping up in the first 2 minutes

How on Earth did he pump out the Mario Kart video so quickly? Was he making two videos in tandem? Crunch? Getting video editors/others to help make his videos?

I did recently stumble upon Summoning Salt and found those pretty fascinating in the amount of research. I've always been interested in the scene and videos but never enough to actually do it myself. The videos were great, though I agree that the appeal is niche.

I caught up with Salt, and now that I hear this Karl Jobst fella is promoted alongside him I'll be giving him a watch. Especially since the only negative I can say about Summoning Salt is that the videos are mostly exclusive to the Nintendo games scene and I am interested in seeing a focus on runs from other platforms.

Just jumping in to recommend Karl Jobst' videos some more. Dude's an excellent speedrunner who puts great emphasis and passion into these videos, explaining even to newcomers what makes the things special, how certain tricks work, why certain parts are insanely difficult and whatnot. From exposing cheaters to celebrating great speedrunning achievements, he's got a great spectrum of content. He may not be as entertaining as a person as some of the most famous streamers (he streams too, btw), but his content is fantastic. The Doom speedrun challenge he launched brought an unlikely community together made of people who maybe never touched Doom or certainly not for speedrunning, making plenty of people interested in speedrunning a game that is easily accessible but with endless skill and strategy ceiling. Hell, it made me pick up Doom speedrunning again after juggling with it a little bit before.

Easily one of the best content creators on YouTube right now, a must see for gaming fans regardless of how much they know about speedrunning.
