You can't beat Team Ico / Gen Design on this subject

Naughty Dog games are amazing, and Cuphead is incredibly, so choosing only one is hard.
But in TLG, Trico is animated like ... You believe that thing is alive

It's the most lively animated creature ever in a game, and it doesn't even exist in the real world for reference. It's incredible.

RDR 2 shouldn't even be in the poll.
Animation blending is terrible. For example: you have to be in a especific place to loot a body, otherwise the character awkwardly goes from one place to another just to loot the body.

But it has a lot of different animations, I'll give you that

If I'm not mistaken Naughty Dog is the only Studio rendering characters touching their face and deforming them accordingly.

For Honor is an incredibly responsive game. That is in spite of the part where they have A class animation blending.

What you're arguing would be akin to arguing that Uncharted's animation is janky because it speeds up in response to player input.

The human character who's wonderfully animated? And Trico is clearly the highlight of TLG, as getting that character to work was a gargantuan effort for the entire team, which also involved skipping an entire console generation due to the complexity.

animated well but not as well as this

rdr 2 has the least amt of "skating on ice" look to its animation of any game released. smoothest transitions as well. has any other studio blended animation with an actual physics engine other than that football game from years back that may or may not have ever released?

That can absolutely happen in Uncharted 4 too, just usually faster since RDR 2 is slower paced.

So many awesome games with even more awesome animation, I agree with every game posted here. Shame on anyone trying to downplay anything.

My two cents: you can't quantify animation to a point where you can call something the best. So everyone is a winner that finds many people who enjoy it.

whenever I imagine animation in rdr2 I just remember the side step shuffle to line up with an animation prop.

What? No, it doesn't happen

The body is looted no matter where you are positioned

Do you have any gif or video of it?

Yes, this 2 seconds clip from the trailer looks good

But my point about the looting animation still stands
Characters having to get into place for a specific animation's playback is a reality of game animation. Even when it comes to games like UC4 and Red Dead.

I agree with Red Dead, but not so much about UC4. I really can't remember of it happening while playing.

But feel free to show an example if so

I know it's a common situation, but we are talking about the best of the best.
You won't see it happening in TLG, for example.

Some studios mask this limitation sometimes by smart design or tech

I mean the climbing can be considered an example since the game is very lenient.

... This is a glitch

Not something that the developer intended, or that the player will be seeing throughout the campaign

That's like picking an animation bug from RDR and displaying it as an example
I played through that section multiple times. It's not a glitch as the game is consistently that lenient. So the only natural conclusion is that they felt most wouldn't notice. As most people don't. And as a said, stuff like this is literally just a reality of game animation.

And thus really has very little if any relevance when it comes to discussions about animation quality.

I voted for God of War because it managed to keep some sort of realistic spectacularity while still being gamey as fuck.

I'm sorry, but apart from Cuphead those are all titles that make extensive use of mocap. That disqualifies it for me.
?

Motion capture requires a ton of polish via keyframing. Even high quality performance capture.

Trico might be the liveliest character in a game, but the boy's animation is ps2 era.
I really disagree with this.

This is some really expressive animation that's a very natural step up from their previous games.

Overall I think it's RDR2. The quality across such a broad range is ridiculous despite its small flaws.

For a something more isolated it's Trico in The Last Guardian. The entire game hinges on how Trico acts like a real animal with its own intelligence and the animation does all the heavy lifting for it to work. If you get the chance to play the VR demo it really hits home to how lifelike it is.

Both Final Fantasy XV and Uncharted 4 blew my mind when it came to animations, absolutely nuts.

RDR2 was insane as well, but that one already got a lot of love in this thread.

For me animation quality is about whether it is available during gameplay which means cutscenes that are hand-crafted do not qualify. That said, the thread should be renamed- "Look how far animation quality has come"

I honestly feel like it is a disservice at this point to actually choose one over another even though motion-matching tech has the farthest reaching rippling effect within in the industry (TLoU pt 2 and Horizon Zero Dawn 2 are said to be incorporating it).

Also, thanks to this thread, I learned about the game, 'Gris'. What an absolute stunner of a game.

I still can't believe that Monster Hunter World isn't in a poll about animation. Nergigante alone is an animation masterpiece compared to some performance captured and hand tuned facial animation.

DMCV no doubt, RDR2 is good but at the cost of the gameplay it slows everything down way too much

From that list I voted RDR2, but my favorite animated game this generation is Street Fighter V.

It's not doing any physics-based shit like other games listed, or any fancy animation blending, but aesthetically the animation just looks great and is highly detailed.

has there been any talk about granblue versus here? its limited animation, but it just looks so so good. arcsys is really the best in the biz right now in that regard imo.

GG 2020 might take it even further

Yeah,I didn't expect this response from a dev,if was just simple mocap every AAA game would have Uncharted or RDR2 quality of animation.

Not the ACOs. The hell happened with animations in Assassin's Creed? They used to be top notch.

The Last guardian, Trico's animation and the way he moves and interacts with the game world is astounding to watch. God of War 2018, Spider-Man 2018 & Nier Automata's combat animation all are great!

Probably not anywhere as impressive as the poll examples, but I think horse riding in botw looks great.
