2013: Terrible
2014: Bad
2015: Meh
2016: Good
2017: Excellent
2018: Outstanding
2019: Terrible
2020: Decent

So 2018 followed by 2017,2016 then 2020

It's real tough for me to pick.

2015 for Bloodborne
2016 for The Last Guardian
2017 for Yakuza 0 and Nier Automata
2018 for Yakuza 6, 428 and SotC
Or 2019 for Death Stranding

I think I'd go for 2017, though I like The Last Guardian individually more than any of those other titles.

Whatever year Horizon was. For me at least it was a real 'how the hell' in terms of what could be done with living, breathing open world games. Just blew me away.

the 1-2 of TLOU2 and Ghost of Tsushima (plus official Dreams release) - 2020 was super slick and amazing, but that 'first time' feeling with Horizon will live with me for a long time

2020. 2017 is 2nd place. 2018 is third.

2020 had FF7 Remake, the last of us part 2, persona 5 Royal, dreams, demons souls remake, miles Spider-Man, Nioh 2, ghost of Tsushima, & bugsnax. And the PS5 being their biggest console launch ever? Yeah 2020 was PlayStation's best year in history.

Since this is only about exclusives I'll have to go 2020. Dreams, Persona 5 Royal, The Last of Us Part 2, Nioh 2, FF7R, Ghost of Tsushima, 13 Sentinels, Sackboy and Miles Morales is ridiculous for one year.

I've got a PS4 at the beggining of this year, so 2020. Bought all the exclusives for cheap, hehe.
Talking about exclusives... then 2018. God of War 2K18! That's a console seller if I ever saw one.

2016-2020 was really an incredible run. Think 2021 might be a little soft if stuff gets delayed, but then that just means 2022 will be incredible.

2017. Had some of my favorite games for PS4: Nioh*, Gravity Rush 2, Horizon ZD are all top 10 for me. Plus Uncharted Lost Legacy, GT Sport, Persona 5, Wipeout Omega, Kingdom Hearts HD Collection, Nier Automata*, Pyre, and more. And then plenty of multiplats as well.

There was something for everyone - western and japanese, tons of different genres. It was a great year for everybody really... except maybe Xbox on the exclusive front.

2018 and 2020 are up there as well, but both didn't quite have the variety that '17 did. Honestly, outside of 2019, Sony had amazing years from 2016 onward. Hell, even 2015 had Bloodborne at least.

*had PC ports as well

I will never get the love for 2017. One of the worst years, IMO. 2018 is where it's at for God of War alone!

Really? 2017 is one of the worst years when 2014 and 2019 exist? Nope.

2017 was the year I bought a PS4. Persona 5, Nioh and Horizon: Zero Dawn were on my watchlist and all three were exclusive to the system at the time.

Yes. It's that bad, IMO. RE2 alone shits on everything 2017 had to offer. Horizon wasn't for me and neither was BotW.

Not bad games, just weren't for me. I've played Persona 5 Royal since, not a bad game. Bought RE7 after RE2, not a bad game either. I just found no enjoyment that year, unfortunately, even if I'd played said games that year. 2017 is nowhere near what it's hyped up to be. 2018 eclipsed 2017, again, IMO.

God of War was insane. Probably my GOTG.

As someone who's finished Demon's Souls over six times, nah. Bloodborne is a definitively better game, and that's okay. DeS is much older than BB and From hadn't figured the format out fully yet. That's not to say DeS is a bad game - it's not - but Bloodborne is the ultimate crystallization of the Soulsborne format, whereas DeS is the larval form of that concept.

No lies detected. 100% agree.

It's gonna vary pretty drastically by genre taste but I'm going to vote for 2018 personally.

God of War is a credible contender for Sony's best published game ever, Spider-Man was excellent and they released an actual killer app for PSVR in Astro Bot.

2017, which is insane since it was also the Switch's best year. DanganRonpa V3, Hatsune Miku: Project Diva Future Tone, Persona 5, and Nier Automata all released that year. Also the Japanese version of Dragon Quest XI if you want to count that.

2013: Knack, Killzone: Shadow Fall, Resogun
2014: Infamous: Second Son, Driveclub, Last of Us Remastered
2015: Bloodborne, Until Dawn, The Order: 1886, Tearaway Unfolded
2016: Uncharted 4, Ratchet & Clank, PSVR, Street Fighter 5, Persona 5, The Last Guardian
2017: Knack 2, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Nioh, GT Sport, Uncharted: Lost Legacy, Gravity Rush 2
2018: God of War, Spider-Man, Detroit: Become Human, Astro Bot Rescue Mission, Shadow of the Colossus, Yakuza 6
2019: Day's Gone, Death Stranding, Medieval Remake, Concrete Genie
2020: Last of Us Part 2, Dreams, Ghost of Tsushima, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Nioh 2

2018 is amazing but 2020 wins for me.

2017 was far and away one of the best gaming years in a long time. PS4 was a big part of that.

I havnt played a single 2020 game on playstation, but on paper that looks super strong.

So for me personally, 2017 is still the strongest.

Coincidentally before reading the thread I visited my friend after months and asked him if there was a game he truly enjoyed . He said he was overall disappointed with PS4. With the exception of Days Gone that felt truly like a masterpiece game to offer something different, rest of games he played were from OK to very good (he avoided TLOU2 due to the known issues and did not buy Cyberpunk either).
PS3 had much more awe inspiring games overall and support after next gen lasted longer. Now even Sony want to force players to get rid of PS4 as fast as possible in favour of PS5.

2017. Amazing year, was an amazing year for Japanese games (RE7, Gravity Rush 2, Yakuza 0, Nier Automata, Nioh, FFXIV: Stormblood) and Bethesda (The Evil Within 2, Prey). I get that it's a question for exclusives only and all but even then it's still 2017 (I was playing pretty exclusively on my PS4 that year).
2020 is a close second though.

That little streak of Japanese greatness back in 2017 was sure something, but I think overall I would give it to 2018.

2017, easily.

Nier Automata, Prey, Wolf 2, Lost Legacy, Nioh, Edith Finch, Crash Trilogy, Little Nightmares, RE7, Sonic Mania..

Edit: Should have read the OP - only talking about exclusives? Then discount the above lol. Based on that then probably 2018 for me based on Spider-Man and GoW.

2017 was legit but 2020 takes it. Nioh 2, FFVII Remake, 13 Sentinels, The Last of Us Part II, Ghost of Tsushima, Persona 5 Royal and, even though I personally played it on PS5, Miles Morales.

Incredibly strong year. My answer would be different if we were allowed to count multiplatform titles. 2015 and 2018 would be in the running.

It's definitely 2020 for me, first party output this year has been really impressive, and 2021 for PS5 is looking like a worthy sequel.

2018. I've never been so hyped for something as I was for GoW and it over delivered. Only for it to be followed by Spider-Man, a game not as strong as the very best ps exclusives but still an extremely enjoyable game.

PlayStation make my favourite games easily at this point but these guys have had me captivated since 2016 with U4 and Ratchet.

Wow no love for 2016???!!!

Uncharted 4, The Last Guardian, Final Fantasy XV, Ratchet and Clank, Deus Ex, Dark Souls 3, Dishonored 2, the launch of PS4 Pro, PS4 Slim and PSVR.

2020 was an amazing year as well, probably the best final year ever for a console.

1. All this tells me is that 2017-2020 was one hell of a fucking run.

2. 2019 was one hell of a year if you are into Japanese games.

3. 2021 is going to be the slowest year since 2014 or 2015.

Ratchet/GT7/Horizon/GoW alone makes that last point null (if they all release "on time" of course).

2017 had Gravity Rush 2, Horizon, Nioh, Wipeout Omega Collection, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, Everybody's Golf, Gran Turismo Sport and Knack II, plus all the PSVR stuff I couldn't be bothered looking up and the other ludicrous releases from that year.

I think I can make a case for any year since 2015.

2015: Bloodborne, Helldivers, Tearaway Unfolded, Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection, Until Dawn
2016: Alienation, Gravity Rush Remastered, Ratchet & Clank, The Last Guardian, Uncharted 4: A Thief's End
2017: Gran Turismo Sport, Gravity Rush 2, Horizon Zero Dawn, Matterfall, Nier Automata, Nioh, Persona 5, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy
2018: Astro Bot: Rescue Mission, Detroit Become Human, God of War, Marvel's Spider-Man, Shadow of the Colossus Remake, Tetris Effect
2019: Blood & Truth, Concrete Genie, Days Gone, Death Stranding
2020: Astro's Playroom, Demon's Souls Remake, Dreams, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Ghost of Tsushima, Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Nioh 2, Persona 5 Royal, Sackboy: A Big Adventure, The Last of Us Part II

Actually, pure numbers alone, 2020 is one hell of a PS4 sendoff and intro to the PS5.

For me, Bloodborne by itself was a game I revisited a dozen times and still will revisit, so that elevates the year by itself. Plus, Until Dawn ended up being a really fun party game in its own right. 2017 was quite strong with a great new IP and a full-length Uncharted game a mere year after 4. 8, though.... between a marvel of a VR platformer and one of the best games I've played in GoW, that's up there.

2020, though.... it's hard to deny how strong it was. A JRPG remake, a bunch of games made by regular people, two platformers, an open-world samurai game, a superhero adventure, and one of the most ambitious narratives I've seen put into a game. Despite how highly I think of Bloodborne and God of War, I also think very highly of The Last of Us Part II in all departments (gameplay, sound, plot) and thought about the narrative for a long time after finishing.

So 2020 gets my vote, but I can't begrudge someone for picking something else, whether it was the introduction of VR in 2016 or the year of the underrated and awesome Days Gone.
