A lower budget remake would be great, something like Trials of Mana.
They should go crazy and remake Trigger, Cross(god know how much it needs) and do Break.
Don't @ me, let me dream.

Trigger? No. But I would give a vulgar amount of money for them to take another crack at Chrono Cross.

If it means they'd have to split the game into multiple parts, no thank you. I'd rather they do a Trials of Mana style/quality remake using Toriyama's art style if it meant the complete game in one package.

How many copies did FFVII sell compared to CT? There is your answer.

That said, I would settle for a remake in the same art style as Ni No Kuni.

To answer the question posed in the title; realistically, no. Barely anyone played Chrono Trigger.

The best you could hope for is one of those hideously ugly 3D remakes they create Ă  la Secret of Mana.

The poll is waaaay different from your thread title

They might, if they can get BIRD STUDIO/Toriyama on board.

I would like to see it.

I feel like FFVII was perfect for this kind of remake because, as much as I like it, I'm not that fond of any particular element of the gameplay. Anything they decide to do with the systems and balancing, I'm in. Chrono Trigger, on the other hand, has incredible gameplay and pacing, wouldn't be too happy with them changing it just for the sake of making it fresh.

People asked for FFVII Remake to explore that world in high fidelity, but personally if I get Chrono Trigger again, I want that specific experience of playing it.

Also what terrifies me about a Vagrant Story remake. I'm currently playing through it for the first time, and it's such a brilliant game. They'd totally ruin it in a remake. A remaster with some QoL changes would be very welcome, though.

Giving it the FF7 Remake treatment (minus splitting the game into several releases)??? Hell to the fuck yea.

they won't. chrono trigger is a beloved game but it was never a huge seller, they won't give it anywhere near the same budget as ff7r.

also it's pretty much perfect. what they need to do it port it to current consoles.

Square/Enix has never demonstrated that they share the widespread community sentiment that Chrono Trigger is their best and most prestigious game.

Moreover, the last thing Chrono Trigger needs is padding. One of the reasons it stands so tall is how absolutely packed it feels for how lean it really is. The additional content on DS was roughly the upper limit of expansion it could bear. If it's remade as a dazzling single-volume release, sure, I'd love to see that (in my head I'm already imagining the dynamic flashbacks of the courtroom scene), but it doesn't need to be stretched out.

Maybe they should remake it. I tried playing Chrono recently and I thought it was pretty bad. Kinda sucks because I loved that game back when I played it during release. I probably should have left it alone so I could remember it being awesome.

I would hope not. Chrono Trigger doesn't need any expansion to its narrative. If anything, a Trials of Mana style remake would be the way to go.

They won't because on the business side it would be a waste of money, it won't sell enough to recoup its cost. Personally I would give anything for this to happen, i'll even take a Trials of Mana budget game for the Chrono franchise. Just give me something Square, you gave Mana, Nier, and Saga a chance, can you give Chrono another stab at least?

just checked the sales of chrono trigger it isnt bad its very good actually its comparable to dragon quest, so the chance is that it would be a dragon quest 11 scenario, a game that would sell very well in japan but few copies on the west

sooo i dont think chrono would bomb like you guys say, but it would not be very successful in the west. So should they make something like FF7 ?probably not, but should they make something similar to dq11 budget, yeah they could make money.

summary
So answering the thread question. No.
Answering the poll question. Yes.

Will they do? Probably not

btw looking by sales and popularity pov, FF6 could receive a 7 treatment the sales of 6 were outstanding.

I don't want it. I'd rather a game that could use a remake get it, or a new entry. CT still holds up. I played it all the way through for the first time in 2017, and I enjoyed it.

Honestly, as much as I respect Chrono Trigger for its role in my history with video games, I do think a lot of improvements could be made to it. It's one of the few games I've played through 20+ times, and I love it for how it approaches time travel is a surprisingly intuitive and interesting way. That said, I don't think the battle system is particularly well-executed, as it doesn't make sufficient use of the line- or AoE-based abilities. It needs something similar to the positioning system in the Grandia or Lunar games to really make combat more interesting. That said, while I'd like to see improvements made in this respect, I'm not so sure I trust Square-Enix to execute on those expectations in a way that I'd like.

I'm not interested in Square touching Chrono Trigger. They couldn't even port it right.
The add-on DS content showed me that I don't want SE fucking with Chrono Trigger, lol.
Man, the DS additions all missed the mark on what worked about Chrono Trigger. Static backtracking sidequests, palette swap bosses dropped in with only higher stats and no fanfare, fields with a bunch of unskippable enemy encounters. Just depressing.

There's about half a dozen Final Fantasy games that would get the 7 Remake treatment before Chrono Trigger.

The game isn't that popular

Hmm I don't know. Chrono Trigger has a lot of cred on the internet, but Square Enix doesn't do much with it. Rare rereleases, no merchandising or anything. I wonder if they're not aware of its legacy or if they just don't think it's particularly marketable. Maybe its popularity is confined to a small number of enthusiasts on the internet 🤷

Personally I think a fully 3D remake would be cool. I wouldn't want it to be as realistic as FF7R though. I'd want it to keep the Toriyama look. But not like DQ11. It definitely has a grungier look to it that needs a more specialized art style to do it justice. If they could make it look really close to the original art that would be awesome.

No, because I'm tired of remakes/remasters of games easily accessible otherwise.

Just release a fucking sequel already.

How about "no, the game doesn't need it." Those 2D graphics hold up much better than the original FF7.

Nope. Square execs simply do not view Chrono Trigger with nearly the same degree of nostalgia as the fans do.

I'm bringing this thread back from the dead as the topic is timely enough to continue the discussion.

Chrono Trigger is a popular game. The original game sold really well, the DS enhanced released sold really well, too. Why wouldn't it be remade? However, I don't see a Final Fantasy VII Remake approach to this. Instead, the smarter option would be to remake the game with a Dragon Quest XI facelift. Not only do you have the framework to build from using a game that has Akira Toriyama character models, but there's this, too.

A Chrono Trigger remake that has both a 2D and a 3D mode would make the game equally accessible to veterans and newcomers.

This might be controversial and is definitely not MY opinion:

Chrono Trigger's artstyle is quite 'dated' and I imagine would not have the broad appeal amongst consumers in 2020 to justify the cost of such a full-on remake.

Plus FFVII is considered by many to be a legendary game in general, not just a standout JRPG. Whilst true gamers and those who experienced the game back in the day are aware of Chrono Trigger's greatness - it is nowhere near as revered as FFVII to the average joe.

I imagine if you asked 100 people on the street if they had heard of either game, the amount of respondants who recognize FFVII but not Chrono Trigger would DWARF the number the other way around.

Would I want them to vs if they would is different. They would never since the game isn't referenced/talked about as much despite being better.

I too would prefer a third Chrono game (more in the style of Trigger and less like Cross).

I would gladly take a AAA ground up remake, but I would rather those resources be redirected to a new entry.

The dream team would have to be involved, and I would love to see the time traveling mechanic explored even further.
