It's gotta be N64 games, gotta be.

Mario 3D All-Stars dies on April 1st, and they aren't going to launch it without Mario 64. Plus OOT and MM to tie into Zelda's 35th.

I'd die if they added Goldeneye too but I'm not expecting it.
I'm going to die if Zelda 35th celebration ends up being a crummy release on nso.

It deserves better. Like proper HD versions of the 3ds releases. The WiiU Remasters, everything really. It's the best ip after all. :P

can't wait for the "where the hell are Earthbound and Super Mario RPG???" style complaints to multiply tenfold when there are no Rare games on N64 NSO

I feel like most people on an enthusiast site would know why those aren't there, at least. Unless DK64 and Diddy Kong Racing are inexplicably missing.

Could be giving folks too much credit though.

I mean we'll probably get DK64.

DKR has the issue of Banjo, though that may have been smoothed over with the deal to get he and Kazooie in Smash.

Have any insiders hinted at an indie world coming soon or is it just about that time again that people are expecting one?

it's hard to tell where the original Diddy Kong Racing stands after they scrubbed Banjo and Conker out of the DS version

that game's in a real weird place

In a world where Nintendo was able to get Banjo in Smash, and as well as DK64 with Jetpac fully included back on Wii U, I don't really see why they can't work it out with Microsoft to get the original DKR on NSO, with Banjo and Conker in-tact. Whatever happened with the DS version was eons ago.

Oh true true, forgot about Banjo (and Conker) being in that game somehow.

I guess the Wii U got DKR DS?

Yep, but that replaced Banjo and Conker with Dixie and Tiny.

Although Tiny inexplicably aged a decade.

My hope is that if N64 games are added, that they're given the Mario 64 in 3D All-Stars treatment, with button prompts changed to reflect Switch buttons, games up-rezzed to at least 720p and the option of both inverted and modern camera controls.

Just being able to play with friends online would be amazing. Assuming they carry on that functionality from the NES and SNES apps.

Some Rare games would be the icing on the cake, but I would expect the usual 20 or so games Nintendo normally provide. Mostly first-party with a couple of third parties for good measure. (crossing my fingers for Mystical Ninja starring Goemon but I know that'll never happen).

The better these sticker star-styled Paper Mario games get, the more heartbreaking it is that the core game design and character design flaws are still there.

Like imagining TOK with an actual form of progression for completing battles, and more unique character designs, such a massive instant improvement. Because there is just SO much good there, it's just frustrating at this point.
Paper Mario is a series caught between two worlds. It's good, but could be so much more. TOK is quite uneven - it's charming for sure, but in terms of game design, it feels scattershot and underdeveloped in places.

I reckon you could cut TOK in half and make a few tough design decisions and end up with a better game. It's an odd game that feels bloated, but barebones at the same time.

I enjoyed my time with it though.

Thank you. I felt alone that I couldn't quite encapsulate why TOK didn't grip me without coming off as a diehard TTYD fan. Barebones certainly with its lack of sidequests, and yeah, I'd agree with bloated because halfway through the fourth ribbon I just got super annoyed with the frustrating minion battles and was doing everything I could just to blitz through and say I finished the game. I know now I'm not buying any future Paper Mario game at launch; the series has moved on without me so I know I can put it on the backburner.

I don't have much detail regarding the upcoming NSO rehaul besides the fact that there will be 2 subscription tiers; Mario Kart on the other hand, you can bet your bitcoin profits on it!

Like the chump I am I'll pay for that second tier at first, but hell Nintendo better make it worthwhile if they're gonna charge $60 (CAD) a year

While i totally believe they're working on a new Mario Kart, i don't think they need it for the Pro or generally before Switch 2.

Launch the successor with a brand new Mario Kart day one and you're set for the launch.

He's back... and he brings GOLD. Which, naturally, attracts the attention of Wario.

Or Elon Musk.

Nintendo of Europe are offering 10% gold points on a Nintendo Switch Online subscription until early May...

Knowing Nintendo, the current SO tier will become more expensive and have perhaps GB games added, while a tier with only online play access will be created and have the current price.

jk, but not that much

Hmmmm

$20 for NES/SNES games (which we currently have right now), and then $40-$60 to get N64, GCN and Wii games (starting with the 3DA versions of 64/Sunshine/Galaxy)? That'd be something.

$20 to not have your Switch stomped on by hired goons

$60 to keep the current subscription

If this whole subscription tier addition to NSO has any merit to it, I wonder how that's gonna affect Family Plans. Also wonder whether we'll have to reset our subs to take advantage of the higher tiers since a bunch of people are still likely subbed annually from the latter half of the year, or if existing subs will get auto-upgraded for the remainder of their sub period.

Tbh, I wish online play was the base service, for like 10€/year with NES/SNES/whatever else being seperate opt-in subscriptions, but I'm probably alone on this.

They kinda have to do a Virtual Console like setup if they ever plan on going beyond N64. Those Gamecube Roms ain't work with an app setup that auto dl's every new addition.

At least it won't work without Nintendo massively bumping the internal memory of the Pro and any future Switch system by like 200GB.

Gamecube (and Wii) games are not coming to NSO as free, automatic downloads. The files are large and the games are still modern/valuable enough to sell individually. Sunshine and Galaxy when emulated in widescreen in HD resolutions look enough like current Switch games to populate a service like "HD Classics" or "Virtual Console HD".

N64 is hard to guess. I could see them selling the big first-party games (Mario, Zelda, Star Fox, Donkey Kong) in "HD" (960x720) emulation (like Mario 64 was). I think those would still sell, even with the low-poly/retro look. Publishers that have brought N64 games to Switch are selling them individually (Star Wars Racer, Doom 64, Turok, Turok 2) and not part of collections (like the Contra/Mega Man/Castlevania collections of 8/16-bit games)

Regarding N64 games on NSO, I think the library would run out pretty quick after Mario/Zelda/DK. There's a tier of games that would be great on NSO
(F-Zero, Kirby, Yoshi, 1080º, Wave Race, Excitebike), but a big chunk of the library was Rare games, licensed games, (movies, sports), and games that have current entries already (Smash, Mario Kart, Pokemon Snap, Tennis, Golf).

I think for NSO, Game Boy makes more sense. There's a lot more to the library and it's relatively easy to surface a gem every few months.

I stopped thinking like this in 2019 and it's been swell so far

(All joking aside: if they killed off Virtual Console like that, there's really nothing they can't do.)

Marth also dies on the 31st. At least for most folks. I saved his life late last night upon realizing I'd not yet done so.

I would be okay with it if Advanced was there. But we all know Nintendo. They'll milk it and leave GBA out for now.
4 years in and all we've gotten are a bunch of NES and SNES games. All we've left to hope for is that they don't restart the service when the succ comes along and we end up having to wait another 3 years to get the donkey kong country games.
