You're in for a ride op.

As someone who never got into the original games I couldn't have been less interested in this release if I tried - Until all of the 10/10 started to hit that is.

I picked it up a few days after launch to see what all the fuss was about and I wasn't let down. It's really hard to pick a GOTG from Sony's exclusive pool but this is definitely up there.

my only GOW experience prior to playing this, was maybe 1 or 2 levels or the original game that i played on my PS3 (hd collection).

this new one really grabbed me. Its visually striking. Satisfying combat....and the AXE. I thought i would tire of it. And it was gimmicky. But i just never get sick of it.

The Boy too. Another thing i thought i would get sick of. But his presence really helped the pace. And added a lot to the story

It's a masterpiece.
GOTG with Bloodborne.
That moment, you know which one Im talking about, still the best set piece of this gen if not all time.

Amazing graphics, but the rest didn't really do much for me. Probably the GoW game I've liked the least, even compared to GoW: Betrayal.

I'll parrot in here what I say in every God of War thread: I'm someone with precisely zero affinity for the series and Kratos. God of War 2 was the only one of the bunch I enjoyed. I otherwise found every game sluggish with weak, unsatisfying combat and encounter design, a boring take on Greek mythology, and a miserable protagonist. God of War '18 is genuinely probably one of my favourite games ever. I enjoy almost every single thing about it immeasurably more than all of its predecessors combined, with exception of maybe the significant reduction in big boss fights.

Really, really fantastic ride. Eager for Ragnarok, even if it's got big shoes to fill.
Wanted to say 100000% this.
truly did not like GoW series until 2018 and one of the most incredible games I have played in the past 30 years.

I love the classic Gow games and I love the 2018 game. Probably one of, if not the best "reboot" out there. Great graphics, storytelling, soundtrack, fighting system...

It's a great game, but not that memorable. I'm positive GOW 3 had better pacing, art direction, music and set pieces / bosses. 2018 obviously is better written but there is nothing special about this aspect either.

I'm enjoying it, but as someone who likes to explore a lot, the metroidvania aspects of "come back here when you've got such-and-such ability" don't mesh too well with how drawn out traversal is and how lackluster the loot can be.

And combat is pretty good. Sound, animation, and pure reactiveness on the axe is nice, but sometimes the lack of any sort of stagger on some enemies make fights a bit more "chip away" than I'd like. That could be hard mode speaking though. Oh, and enemy projectiles passing through enemies who obstruct the view of said projectiles can be frustrating. As well as carefully threading the lines between tapping/pressing/double tapping and accidentally pulling the wrong move. I've often accidentally performed a guard break (double tap L1) when I mean to do a block/parry (tap and hold L1), leaving me totally exposed. As well as some enemies having a bad case of the last-moment swerve where they pull a ridiculous redirect with their attack to chase your position when you try to dodge.

But besides all that, I do enjoy it.

Yeah. PS4 Pro had a performance mode that was around 40-50fps that is now locked 60fps on PS5.

1080p resolution though.

Wait what? So there already is a 60fps mode?? I was waiting for the patch after all the talk about the disc version being able to play 60fps without the updates and digital version not having 60 fps etcetc.

Yeah, performance mode is 1080/locked 60 because it's using the PS4 pro modes but actually able to hit the performance target.

The digital foundry BC test showed off God of War running in it as well as a few other games.

I thought it was ok. I was expecting a lot more spectacles, more set pieces like the old God of War. The few times they did have them though, they were excellent. It's my third favourite God of war.

Yeah.

I think the disc version has the fidelity mode with uncapped framerate in the 1.0 version which allows for 4k/60fps on PS5.

If there's nothing strange the sequel will be even better and I'm not ready for that

Wow, I totally missed that, thanks.

I think I am more than halfway through the game (
got the blades of chaos, went and just came back from Helheim
), and I just can't agree with most of the opinions and sentiments here. I was always wary of the direction Santa Monica took the franchise after seeing it for the first time back in E3 2016, and most of my worries were confirmed by finally playing it. I really don't think the game is as good as it could have been (especially the combat): it's serviceable, but the focus on RPG-lite mechanics, the behind-the-shoulder camera that creates two types of tells for incoming attacks - and also never lets me break away from it, making it feel like a shooter rather than a proper action game, where I move the camera rather than the character, the cooldown attacks that I'd rather have them balanced as proper combo moves I can use then I want, the shoddily implemented child (why would I care for him in cutscenes if he's invincible in combat? I get the notion of avoiding escorting-like gameplay, but it just makes the narrative feel so much less impactful), the underwhelming boss fights, the boring and unskippable slow walking segments... Well, at least it looks very good, is very polished and sounds great. I just don't think it is a good action game, and not very good at what it seeks to do either.

Absolutely amazing game , one of the few games that I bought on launch day at full price . I have played all of the previous GOW games even the PSP ones , so I wasn't new to the series . The change in tone and combat was a welcome surprise , it's the best game in the series for me.

I think this a rare example of a game that gets better and better as it goes on. Easily one of the best games this gen.

When they showed the first reveal at E3 2016 and it looked like a TLOU knock-off i was so disappointed and expected a slowly paced, game with a bad combat and some weird scripted scenes but Santa Monica and Cory knew what's up and yes it's still a "cinematic third person game" but the gameplay was sooo good and the presentation on point.

It's flawed, but still, the 2nd best Sony 1st party title after Bloodborne and my 2018 GOTY.

So I am taking it that, as someone who played maybe half of gow1, it's still worth checking out? It's essentially at the bottom of my backlog now. I picked it up super cheap and am curious about it from word of mouth. But, the initial 3 games I didn't click with and the fact it's become a 30 hour rpgish thing worried me.

I also imagine I should probably watch a quick recap for the previous 3 games ?

This is a very different game compared to the original trilogy so you might enjoy it.

And yeah, watch a recap for sure, shouldn't take that long.

Haven't touched it yet on PS5. Really all I want is 4K60fps locked.

I didn't love it, still not finished it. I'm just missing something others so easily 'get', it seems. It's superbly made but none of it excited me.

I'm in the same boat as you OP.
I've played all of the old GOWs, but missed this one on the PS4. I just finished it on PS5 a few minutes ago, and it's rare for me to finish a game!
I was really pleasantly surprised by the acting, character design, combat (which gets better as you progress) and scope of it.

It is absolutely big budget gaming. So many detailed models and environments, as well as the near constant recorded dialogue. I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would. The old games were groundbreaking for their sense of scale, however their actual gameplay always seemed quite basic and often annoying In places. This GoW has hardly anything in common with the old games, and frankly I'm amazed that the franchise was even revived at all, but I'm glad that they did, and in such a grand fashion.

But still... I would like to see something on the scale that blew my mind back in GoW 1, with the titan with the enormous maze level on it's back (my memory is fuzzy, but it seemed huge at the time).

What I loved about GOW is that it felt like this epic journey. It reminds me of those old 1980s R-rated fantasy movies that I watched growing up. It feels truly timeless.

You know you can't just poke your head in here, and not expect to be asked if you guys are going to patch it for the PS5. ;)
