Got about 40 hours in or so, mostly docked. Just didn't care for it and unless the series gets a major makeover, the last Zelda game I'll ever play.

Played on Wii U.
I didn't dislike it, but it's also not anywhere near being my favorite Zelda game.

I do like it better handheld, but having options on how to hold it still doesn't fix the weapon degradation system.

I did like it, playing 99% in handheld mode. Game ran and looked better in handheld mode (imo) at launch.

If the sequel is better optimized I wouldn't using that Pro controller though.

I liked it, and played almost entirely on the TV

I TRIED handheld a few times, but it was so hard on the eyes

The game didn't blow me away in any way, but it wasn't completely terrible either. I voted disliked because the game was overhyped and didn't deliver. I played a mix of handheld and docked. Probably slightly more docked than handheld.

Disliked it 3 years ago and went back earlier this year and beat it.

Do you like open world games? The weapon durability took some getting used to but there's so many weapons available (plus if you get a certain sword later on) so it's no big deal.

I'm having more fun with some games docked for sure, and Zelda certainly is one of them. Odyssey as well. A big screen just changes the experience for me. This can be the other way round for certain games, especially sprite based stuff I just prefer in handheld.

Loathed it on the Wii U. First Zelda I didn't beat. And not only is this the one Zelda you could finish instantly (Because whee who wants to see content in the game they paid money for? What's that, content was bad, wWll if you don't like it you know you can just finish the game right, thus invalidating that content as bad because it was optional all along anwyay) but even for other Zelda's I didn't like (Skyward Sword in particular) I at least was interested enough to finish it (That was a mistake as well, the final third in that game is abysmal).

I always find it interesting how much some players just despise the weapon degradation system. I've always had massive issues hording items in games, but found BotW to be a refreshing break from that as you had to just use what you had and weapons breaking and being short on them made for some intense and exciting moments. I really hated the Korok seeds specifically because the ability to drastically expand your storage directly undermined this aspect of the gameplay. 2nd half BotW was such a cake walk because you could have this enormous arsenal of weapons on hand and it eventually lead to hording of premium ones. I really hope weapon degradation returns but that they significantly limit the number of total weapon slots available to us. I'd be fine if they added in some kind of repair or even upgrade system if that were the case, and having played BotW on Cemu with cheats the loss of weapon breaking really saps a great deal of tension from the combat.

Same for me as well, but I didn't enjoy it more or less either way. It was the lack of progression and general design that I personally didn't like.

Same here. There were some elements of it I liked, and I'm hoping for big improvements in the sequel. But yeah, docked vs. handheld didn't really color my perception too much either way.

I try playing it on tabletop mode and handheld but I felt disoriented so I tried it again docked and while I no longer felt disoriented, the game felt boring for me and just stop playing it. It wasn't until months later where I bought the dlc and play it on master mode, that got me really into it.

Honestly, I don't think many people genuinely dislike Breath of the Wild - I think most just find themselves at odds with the overwhelmingly positive critical reception.

Played 100+ hours on docked Switch. Was fun but FLAWED.

Replayed 100+ hours on CEMU... Now I have decent FPS, resolution and vibrant colors, but the flaws are still there.

My main gripe : once I've found all the shrines in one place, I have no incentive to get back.
Still an excellent game but most of the overwhelming praises it received were hyperbolic or exaggerated.

I liked it. It's got massive issues which being docked/portable has nothing to do with though.

I wouldn't say disliked but I dropped it after about 15 hours because it wasn't really doing it for me. What I played I did docked.

Docked 99% of the time, handheld only on rare occasions.

Personally I think the game is overrated. I think it strayed too far from what makes Zelda unique - it put too much emphasis on open-world exploration and just shoe-horned in a little of everything else. What was in quantity was repetitive/stale (shrines, weapon durability, side quests, story) or not enough (dungeons, bosses). I know this was the point of the game and overall it was okay, but not what I wanted. Spent over 100+ hours to explore the entire map and do everything in the game, but it wasn't rewarding and felt forced.

I hope BOTW2 reigns it in and puts a focus on dungeons, items, progression, and gives it a good narrative. You know, like a traditional Zelda game.

I don't really see the connection between liking or not liking it and the mode you've been playing it at. Then again I only played it on an emulator so far and really liked the first few hours but I'm not too much of a fan of this sandbox/playground open world and while I enjoyed many mechanics, I prefer the more "linear structured" design of older Zeldas.

I disliked it but I am willing to give it one more go. I could not stand how bad the game looked on my big screen so I almost exclusively played it handheld.

I liked the game and played it handheld but I'm just gonna say I can't imagine this ever being something that changes my opinion of a game entirely. It's...the same game.
I didn't like it but same, I don't think the way I played it is relevant to what I think of the game.

Edit: To say what I think of the game, It's an unfinished prototype, I can't believe this what they wanted to create and I have high hopes for 2.

I hated it since launch day. The constant food crafting and weapon crafting was a chore.

I did like the subtle music though, when the music would ramp up it sounded great.

I enjoyed it and played it docked with Joycons in each hand. If it's really necessary to express how I feel about the game, I'd have to say I don't agree with all the high praise it got. It's a nice game, but nothing wowing past a certain point, and for all the freedom regarding gameplay, the level and encounter design barely encouraged people to use said freedom.

WiiU then Cemu. Getting rid of weapon durability made the game less of a chore but I still got bored for the same reason I would get bored of No Man's Sky or Minecraft; empty open worlds just aren't interesting to me.

I like/hate the game at the same time. Its hard for me to describe how I feel about BotW. More hate probably. Played it entirely in handheld mode. If it wasn't a Zelda game I probably would be more lenient on it, but then I likely wouldn't have played it either.

Handheld was only really a problem in some of the mini-dungeons where you have to use motion controls to move things around. That didn't cause me to hate the game.

I played docked and disliked it. My lack of enjoyment had nothing to do with the way I decided to play.

Disliked it. Played it on WiiU at launch.
The game has so many flaws like lack of dungeons, repetitive shrines, empty open world, forgettable bosses, generic battle system/gameplay, and a really lame final boss... And none of them are related to playing it docked or on the go.

Thanks for summarizing my thoughts.

Docked, Pro Controller. I even played it at 4K60 afterwards and that didn't do it. Just found it to be a boring drag with mediocre combat in the 5-6 hours that I've played.

I don't think the way that you play it will help in any way.

I liked it, didn't love it, handheld.
I feel like it's better in smaller chunks. "ok, I want to get up there" "ok, I went through this trial and I'm good"

To be clear, I hate open world games, and BotW innovated enough for me to like it, but I can't help see its flaws more than most people.

Docked more since I remember the battery didn't last much with that game running in portable mode (about 3 hours or so). Didn't like the game, dropped it after 6-7 hours, my least favorite Zelda for sure (not considering the NES and the GBC ones)

I heavily disliked the game. Just wasn't fun for me at all, but that was mostly because of the lack of narrative and not really from graphical issues. The game looks good enough as is.

Mostly docked, and I dislike it.

I just can't get past the combat system/weapon degradation, the empty open world, and the Assassins Creed gameplay.

For a game about freedom and exploration, it sure likes to slow you down or stop you with stamina and degradation systems.

Disliked it and played docked. I keep wanting to revisit it because it feels like the type of game I'd like, but I think what people dig about the freedom of the game is something that just leaves me going, "Ok, what should I focus on? Where should I go?"

I can't imagine that I'd have a better time playing it handheld, especially since I rarely play my Switch handheld in general - even for the games I like on it.

Lol the poll assumes the wii u version does not even exist.
I did not like it that much, at least not as a zelda game. I beat it after many months of tying to get into it on Wii u, then got it again on switch lite (so all undocked) a couple years later and tried to play it again but it just didn't hook me. The lack of direction gives very little motivation to keep playing imo.

I loved it but I played on the Wii U! I guess technically that is "docked"?

I'll add, I loved it because you could ignore the story and just go wherever and mess around. This is what I always really want to do in games. I spent like a year playing Majora's Mask as a kid afraid of the dungeons so I'd just get the items and masks and just play around in the overworld. It's my favorite part!

the open world was absolutely not empty everything is just spaced out way more and the combat is way more complex than every Zelda before it
