I'm from the U.K. so,don't know much about the American Supreme Court.

but isn't how they are chosen and manipulated completely and utterly corrupt and undemocratic?

This is amazingly good news, and it will likely lead to more protections down the line. And personally, seeing conservative media lose their shit over this gives me life. I could sustain myself for weeks on the salt alone.

No not really. It was for Gorsuch but not typically. Nominated by the president then confirmed by the Senate. Senate just pulled a bit of a coup in 2016 to delay Obama's nom from being confirmed.

I mean im shocked because of the polarization of our politics, but it makes sense on every level that it shouldnt happen. time for these things to be enshrined in law.

Just Alito comparing same-sex attraction to "the urge to rape" in the dissenting opinion.
In a sane country, this would be ground for automatic disbarment.

Lots of ppl don't seem aware that this isn't solving everything, as just recently plenty of religious discrimination for LGBt adoptions opened up and healthcare got fucked for LGBT ppl last week...

this ruling doesn't make any decisions on religious reasons and there's many more wins needed to stop what Trump is doing

Still, this is nice to have. Florida and many other states have long been smart enough not to give this as a reason for firing though.

I'm certain that Trump must've thought personally appointing two justices for the Supreme Court would've helped get his fucked up shit pushed through, I'm damn glad this was NOT the scenario that happened with this SCOTUS ruling where his personal appointee Gorsuch ruled in favor of expanding the legal interpretation of Title VII to protect LGBT people.

This victory should also apply to healthcare as well right? Cant Trumps rule on discrimination applying to trans people now be overturned?

I am genuinely shocked. Thank you, Gorsuch, for doing the right thing.

Thomas and Alito need to fucking retire. They've been anti-progressive assholes for years.
Thomas and Alito can retire when the WH and Senate change hands! Don't need Trump and McConnell to push another pair of 50-year-old federalist society shitheads onto the bench.

So was the decision made recently or awhile ago and just released now? Or is the decision released quickly after it is made? I'm just confused about how it works.
The process can be roughly simplified as this:
- Oral arguments happen.
- Judges take a vote on how they decide, usually within days of oral arguments if no other documents are to come.
- One of the "winners" takes on the effort of writing the decision and lead the effort of getting everyone's input or disagreements. This part can take months.

Alito always was scum. Fitting that the court's two likely rapists, Kavanaugh and Thomas represent the remainder of the hateful three. Surprised to see Roberts join the majority, shocked to see Gorsuch join as well. Then again, Gorsuch can be a bit unpredictable at times even though he's still far right overall.

Not usually, they are appointed by the president and confirmed by the Senate. This is basically how it worked in the last 100 years or so, until Obama's last term where he tried to nominated a judge and McConnell blocked him with a Republican Senate majority by refusing to confirm his pick for the court. They did this until Trump won, who then filled that seat with Gorsuch.

This is kind of a perfect example of WHY the court is hard to manipulate though, all that fuckery with Gorsuch and he has still ruled against Republican interests a few times. Overall he is still an extremely conservative judge and imo pretty terrible, but once justices are on the court that aren't beholden to anyone. Roberts an even better example, because he was appointed by Bush yet breaks ranks with the conservatives a decent amount, usually on civil liberties issues.

There are many problems with the modern court, but it's definitely the least corrupt of the 3 major branches of US government

Roberts is concerned with his legacy in US history. Doesn't make him a good Justice, mind, but does mean that he'll use his wiggle room in cases that are likely to be recorded going forward.

Great news for you lovely folks over there! Hopefully this leads to greater things for the LGBT+ community, and it's a relief to have this after the bullshit pulled the other day.

Agreed. I think based on this case and his concern about judicial independence, he's going to join the liberals to rule against Trump on the subpoena issue.

Is this the first good news to come from 2020?

I've forgotten what that concept is like.

It sucks that my first reaction to this as an American living under this administration is surprise, but I'm also elated that it happened. This is huge, and is a big swing against some of the injustices this country is riddled with. Such a relief.

Would this ruling extend to the cake maker who refuses to make a cake for a gay couple, for example?

But it's an election year! Surely Mitch McConnell would wait and see what the will of the people decides rather than pushing through a new justice, right?

mcconnell may actually go down as the worst senator in american history, fuck him so much
