I think gaming laptops are going to gain big in market share.

They are about to release the RTX 3000 models, and people aren't going to have to fight miners or corporations working on deep learning for them. Pairing them with AMD CPUs (ryzen 5000 series) instead of intel's should also help keep costs down on some models.

Remember when 350 was all you ever needed to spend max on a GPU to kick every game's butt?

except Crysis lol

$250 in 1999 is about $390 in 2021, so still well over $300.

Certainly true, but when playing the "memba when" game all prices are fixed. That's why we had 2.5% of people thinking the PS5 was gonna launch at $399.

And this article said $220-250 was on a premium. So being about $300 inflation adjusted dollars, or sub-200 was pretty much in-line for 20 years ago from what I recall from living in that era.

When was this? I just looked up some old MSRP info from over a decade ago and it looks like the top end cards have always been at least $500.

I bought a GTX 285 in 2009 (which was the best single GPU solution on the market at the time of release IIRC) for $330. It launched at $359.

Keep in mind this was a high end card. Mid range cards cost this much these days, even more due to stock shortages (even taking inflation into account).

Unfortunately, my R9 290 is completely dead. It's corpse is boxed up in my apartment somewhere.

RIP, you loud, hot, beautiful bastard....
My 280X died back in 2018, replaced it with a 570 for $155 that came with an offer for RE2 and DMC5 so it was really quite the deal lol.

It's crazy how expensive the GPU market is right now, on all levels. Makes you not want to look into upgrading at all. I think I'll continue to use my trusty little 570 for a long while. Thankfully it seems games will be crossgen for a couple of years. :P

I'm still rocking my rx580 which I got for 230 dollaridoos (about 160 Burgerbucks at the time) in 2018 with vouchers for RE2 and DMC5. I don't see myself getting anywhere near such value any time soon, but I only game at 1080p60 so I can happily bide my time. I hope we see the return of a healthy, suitably priced mid-range within the next couple of years.

I built my nephews midrange PCs for Christmas over the summer (one of em had an RX 580/Ryzen 2600 and the other a 1060 6GB/i5-8600k) and I'm SO glad I got the components early. Managed to build both of them for <$500 each and with quality parts too - about 1TB of SSD storage and 16gb RAM in each, plus some basic RGB lighting and overkill PSUs so they can add more demanding components down the line.

I used a 1660 TI in my own build over the summer and that was the best midrange GPU I've owned. Ran everything at 1440p/60fps with medium-high settings. Now their price is super inflated.

My recommendation is to buy used and hit up FB marketplace as much as you can. That's where I got my 1660 for $150 and an RX 5700 XT for $200 back in August. People just dump stuff without paying any attention to pricing sometimes.

There's been nothing like the 480 to push pricing down hard since the crypto fuckers ruined prices twice.

I got my bro a new 1650 super a few months ago, it's a nice little card for a 6700K

Asking because I don't remember - what was the RX480/GTX1060 equivalent for the 360/PS3 generation?
