Probably Celeste for me. And by that I mean the regular story - not the additional stuff which is insane and beyond my capabilities.

Something on NES that I beat when I was a kid without emulation. Battletoads, Zelda 2, Ninja Gaiden or Castlevania. Can't say anything since has been as hard as those that I beat.

I generally avoid action games that require quick reflexes, so it's probably Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest. I've been able to beat the other FE games without anyone dying, but in Conquest I just said fuck it and let a few people die near the end. Mainly because I just wanted to get it over with.

Probably mega man 9.

Please don't laugh at me if it's actually easy or whatever but it was my first megaman game and it was an absolute bastard.

Absolutely amazing game though

Classic question.

I do have a classic answer: Battletoads for NES.

A freaking nightmare - especially the turbo tunnel

Celeste for me. Id say a souls game but i dont think they are particularly hard, rather methodical. But i just beat doom eternal and it kicked my ass backwards (ultra violence). 3 starring every cup on mario kart 8 at 200 cc was an accomplishment for me

Fire Emblem Fates Conquest. On Lunatic Classic. The last missions were extremely hard, especially Chapter 26. It was so damn annoying that I didn't mind losing Flora if it meant to finish the chapter. Chapter 25 is also another pain in the ass; I just reclassed my Corrin to Spear Master and then used her to kill the boss. Fuck getting those keys to unlock the boss room.

Endgame, though, that is plain impossible unless you know some cheesy strategy. All the adds, reinforcements and the final boss special skill will kill you before you reach him.

Definitely Ninja Gaiden NES.

The last area is absolute horseshit due to the fact that unlike the entire rest of the game, it puts you back to the very first stage of that area instead of the stage you are on.

It's literally the most difficult part of the game with all the most annoying enemies like cats and hawks and shit and hard as fuck bosses.
Yeah but you felt like you really accomplished something when you beat a tough NES game .

To answer the OP it's some NES game.

Kingdom Hearts 3 Crit, I've played through KH2 Crit a Million times without issues but KH3 just hits differently. the last Org Fight (Ansem/YX/Xemnas) Was complete nonsense and it's a miracle I beat it.

Is Devil May Cry 4 on DMD considered difficult? Probably Ninja Gaiden on Xbox though. I'm the only person I know irl that finished it, though most of the people around me have at least tried it. One of these days I'll finish a Souls game, but the difficulty is not why I haven't yet.

I would say a lot of old NES games. I collect them, and I can't believe how far I got in some of those games as a kid. Had a couple of drinks last night and played Paperboy, couldn't make it through the entire week!

Fist: The Legend Continues on C64 probably took me the most tries.
fist-the-legend-continues-5.png

Even NES/SMS games like Ninja Gaiden, Battletoads, Miracle World, Thunder Blade, etc. didn't cause me as much trouble as some C64 games.

For games with save functions, I think Phantasy Star II might have been the hardest. I didn't have the hint book.

Probably Sekiro. Nioh was also pretty hard.

I've finished a lot of hard 8-bit/16-bit games back in the day, but it was so long ago that it's hard to compare difficulty on memory alone. So I've picked a couple of more recent games.

Probably The Witness. The final challenge took me like eight hours of constant playing to finally do and it's not like you can use a guide either.
I had to turn the volume down to finish it. The music was wrecking my psyche. Without the ever increasing tempo, I was able to feel less pressure, regardless of how much time I had left.

but yeah, that was certainly hard, and no guide can help you.

I've played a lot of MegaMan in my time. MM9 is certainly not easy. In fact, it was meant to be hard. I find it much harder than any of the classics. MM1 is unnecessarily hard due to the slower pace, but I still think 9 is harder.

I want to say Wings of Vi, but I was never able to beat the final boss.

It'd either have to be Celeste or S ranking all the bosses on Cuphead.

I don't think I've played anything that's ultra-hardcore difficult. Maybe it's because I just finished it and it's fresh on my mind, but I'd say the most difficult game I've beaten is probably Rain World.

Bloodborne. And I hated every moment of it. Until they offer a real Easy Mode I'll never play another From Software game again.

Timesplitters 2 on hard was rouuuugh. Levels only have one checkpoint in the middle and usually only one set of healing/armor I think.

Hacks aside, probably Mario the Lost Levels. Or if i finished something else more difficult it didn't really leave a permanent scar on my younger self's psyche.

Having gone back to it numerous times since 1995 or whenever I did it I've always been very surprised I ever had the patience for it. Those fucking wind levels with bottomless pits everywhere and one-block-wide ledges with trampolines on them. And people complain about Mario Maker for bullshit.

I struggled with bits of Cuphead, Demon's Souls and Guacamelee too but they were at least fair about it.

I am quite confident I finished it, but memories are blurry. You know, when you are a kid and a decent chunk of money goes into a game, you do it.

I have to imagine it would be some random nes/snes game I dont really remember much of simply because so many games were unfair back then. Sure games can be hard today too, but their difficulty ususally has more thought put into it.

Super Hexagon on Hardestestest mode took me a while to beat. A game that takes 60 seconds to "beat" took me like 30 hours to finish.

Mostly Arcade stuff, 1cc, and about that:

Gradius III, the original Arcade version. You really don't know the price of suffering with that game until the very end... it was one of the happiest days of my life as a gamer when I finished it. And probably Mushihime-sama in Maniac Mode too.

Ah, also, I finished Perfect Cherry Blossom in Lunatic once, like 13 years ago maybe... but I don't like Touhou games on Lunatic, I just prefer hard mode because I think the games are more coherent with it's bullet patterns, but that's just me.

Dark Souls on PS3. O&S were really damn hard, but I wonder if the front door of Blight Town was even more difficult.

Finished every Souls game and their respective DLC.
Bloodborne DLC and DS3 DLC are definitely up there, but NOTHING comes close to the boss of "good ending" in Sekiro.
No cheese, no better build or alternate weapon available.
I never had to "git gud" until then, but 3 hours on this boss brought me to manhood.

Sekiro. Also one of the most frustrating ones.

Hoping Elden Ring is more like Dark Souls and less like Sekiro.
