Has it burned down before? Someone was saying it was bombed out and restored, but then I saw another post saying that was another cathedral.

This is fucking heartbreaking. My wife and I visit Notre Dame when we go to Paris almost every month. It never loses its awe. I'm glad we went in again when we went a couple of weeks ago. I doubt we will be going inside anytime soon.

I'm devastated.

It's bad enough that so much of the structure is being flat-out destroyed by the fire, but I can't imagine the shear amount of smoke damage that will be caused to what's left.

The structure was built so cavernously that all that burning roof is just collapsing back into the base of building. I struggle to think of what will be left.

I'm at the anger phase of a loss, and asking how the hell they didn't have the setup to overcome the fire in this case. :(

I would hope, as the fire wasn't at the bottom of the building, maybe they could save lots of stuff inside.
The fire started at 18h50 local, the roof collapsed less than an hour later.
Whatever they managed to save is probably not a lot.
They are still attempting to take things out, mostly the paintings it seems (source is some dude from the paris diocese)

Everyone should know that it was restored in 1844, and that the restoration was in operation for over 25 years!

I'm not trying to downplay this but the building can be rebuilt, if there is the will for it.

Indeed. It's not even the first time it burns. As a matter of fact like many cathedrals, it's not that well designed, and required several "patches" to avoid crumbling.
Sad for tourism, but well we'll just rebuild it.

From various angles it looks like the stone structure is holding up fairly well, but all that's going to be left inside is char.

I hope whatever's left is structurally sound enough to be rebuilt.

Absolutely terrible. What a loss for humanity. It's a beautiful building. Hope the front facade can be saved...

Everyone is talking about the history and art and stuff, but was anyone inside? Did anyone get hurt?

I hope that they can rebuilt, but a lot of posters have a point - the sculptures and paintings are probably lost already.
Plus, the cost will truly be inmense.

I just saw the footage from the spire going down.... This is terrible.

I was outside it in February, and thought "I'll go inside next time, when I'm here for a proper tourist visit and not just for one day". Massive regret now. I had the time.

Hopefully it can be contained soon.

Imagine standing the test of time for hundreds of years and through World Wars only to burn from likely a restoration incident. What a shame.

It's honestly a miracle it made it almost 900 years in tact. Think of all the amazing treasures that have fallen to disrepair, fire, earthquake centuries ago that we never saw.

BFMTV reporting that the firefighter's water stream can't get high enough

My town has fire code laws for this exact situation, mandating that buildings can't be taller than the fire dept hoses/ladders can reach.

Of course, we have older buildings that got grandfathered in (not as old as Notre Dame of course), and in a fire, those buildings are just toast. Fire Dept would have to just let them burn down.

Notre Dame most likely is already written off as total loss by fire department so they just contain it and let it burn out.

After roof came in there was no saving it :/

With that spire hanging over them the fire department would have to approached very carefully, even maybe not at all until the spire was secured/fallen.

Remember the roof is wood, but the ceiling is stone. If the fire started up top, there's a reasonable chance the main interior space is not burning right now.

How could a fire escalate like this? There must be anti-fire systems in place I'd assume.

I imagine anything on the catacombs is good to go, but everything on the main nave is gone if it's made of wood and will probably need quite large restoration work if it's metal. And as someone else said already, the grout could also be in danger, which makes the rock walls quite dangerous... (I can't quite remember so I'm just assuming there was a crypt or catacombs, anyway)

This is incredibly upsetting to me, the cathedral was among the things my girlfriend cited most frequently when she was studying abroad in France. We were planning to go next year but now it looks like I'll never get to see it.

We spent almost an entire day discussing the architectural style of the building in my AP European History course. I remember falling in love with the design of the buttresses and the central spire. I even modeled it in Minecraft using schematics of the building.

To see the spire fall is just... Devastating to me.

User banned (1 day): Trolling.
And not only the building but the treasure inside. Jesus' Crown of Thorns... just as an example.

Tragic.

The only silver lining here is maybe this will stop people from using these "magic" trinkets to justify religious belief. Like imagine how much human progress has been slowed with nonsense like the Shroud of Turin wasting everyone's time.

The cathedral itself holds architectural and historical value, but these "treasures" are a scourge.
