What's the engine used for FFXV? Some parts of the game looks incredible and some like ps2 era textures but in HD.

It's already in development and didn't epic say UE5 wasn't going to be ready for commercial development until late 2021? Or did I misread that?

Regardless, I'm still concerned VIIR-2 will be UE4 (and part 3 to be full UE5. )
I'd love to be wrong, though. When VIIR looks good, it looks real good. If the next game takes 4-5 years, I'd hope it looks like a legitimate generation jump.

XV used their in-house engine- Luminous.

Their inhouse Luminous Engine. The same engine that will power Project Athia. I think looking at FFXV on PC gives us a good idea what Athia could look like.

Edit: Also funny seeing this thread pop up right after one got made that we don't talk about FF7R anymore.

I'm pretty certain studios like SE would have already gotten UE5 access before it's actual release date

I definitely hope so.
Also- hopefully any work they've done so far on VIIR-2 on UE4 is easily transferable to UE5. To be honest I haven't read much on it, nor am I very tech minded to begin with. 😂

I believe Epic said it would possible to transfer UE4 projects to UE5? Regardless, as mentioned earlier, I'm sure Squeenix has access to UE5 too, if the Godfall guys can get it, I'm sure the Final Fucking Fantasy VII Remake guys can get it.

Lets hope he feels the same way about an SSD baseline and Zen processor...

FFVIIR p2 on UE5 and nextgen-only please

edit : actually y'know what, let's hope the bean counters see value in it rather than pushing for crossgen.

This is the interview, there are other tidbits about the game too.

How Square Enix leveraged Unreal Engine to modernize FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE

<em>FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE </em>Co-director Naoki Hamaguchi shares how Square Enix revamped <em>FINAL FANTASY VII</em>'s graphics, combat system, and world for the modern era while keeping the spirit of the original game.

I also think this point is important what are the benefits of UE.

Did the development team have any favorite Unreal Engine tools or features?

Hamaguchi:
This isn't a tool or feature per se, but incorporating Unreal Engine enabled us to experience points that differed from what we've done thus far.

When developing AAA FINAL FANTASY titles, it had been the norm to use development engines produced internally, so it was necessary for us to keep in mind the learning period whenever new staff members joined the team. However, using Unreal Engine, which generally can be utilized by many people all over, meant that there were many staff members who already had experience working with it. This led to shorter learning periods, which was a huge plus for development efficiency.

Yeah I remember Epic mentioning that UE5 is easy transfer from UE4 plus it's like how almost all the new Xbox studio games (like Hellblade 2) are running on UE5 even though it's not technically out yet. Transistor can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Epic works with their major partners like Sony/Microsoft first with new engines and then start working with other publishers/devs so when the time for actual production release they can show off games like FF7R-2 as an example of what UE5 can do

Kingdom Hearts 4 on Unreal is going to be fuckin insanity.

KH3 is probably one of the best looking games of the generation for me.

Obviously the game will be beautiful, but I want it to be bigger too. Give us the entirety of the Planet, and really jack up the best parts. There's a pretty obvious finishing point for Part 2 and I hope they at least cover until then.

See, developers are so done with this gen it seem. So many restrictions, an annoying HDD making extra work for them to figure out ways to load in assets when the player might need them. Going to SSD and a great CPU must be like a breath of fresh air.

Yeah I'm super excited to see what they can pull off with Part 2 and PS5. I get the feeling that the scope is gonna be insane, like open world continents

By the time UE5 will get it's first production-ready release, FF7R Part 2 will either be out or far past the point where they could switch engines.
Part 3 at best.

They've said you can work on a game in Unreal Engine 4 and easily port to UE5. UE5 isnt a big shift like UE4 was, it is the same codebase. Also I wouldnt be surprised if some companies already have the preview version of UE5

I can't wait to see what Square Enix can do with UE5. FFVIIR-2, if they do use UE5, should be glorious, especially without tight squeezes and behind the scenes loading.

Kingdom Hearts 4 on Unreal is going to be fuckin insanity.

I seriously can't wait for the next big KH project. I'm with ya, 3 is absolutely gorgeous and I was constantly blown away.

What stands out from XV vs VII:R is the way animations and stuff interacts with the environment. XV is on another level when it comes to the quality of animations that game is just amazing to play in on the PC. There was a TON of effort that went into the luminous engine. Just seems to be harder to work with compared to UE4 and probably UE5

I can't wait to see what they'll do in FF7R part 2 and a different team with FF16. UE4.

Hum nope, as said in another response, the engine for FFXV is the Luminous Engine.

>>Final Fantasy XV runs on Square Enix's Luminous Studio graphics engine. The Final Fantasy XV Episode Duscae demo uses version 1.5 while the final game uses version 2.0.<<
