I played it launch and platinumed it. Beat every horde and never had any issues. The only time i got framerate issues was when i wnt to the second area and all of a sudden framerate started stuttering but only when driving and it wasn't all the time.

Its clearly a streaming issue because i beat a thousand man horde with no fps drops.

It most definitely is streaming issues - there's a crazy amount of pop in and the game would straight up pause at times so things could catch up while you were on the bike. It goes worse when you upgraded the speed too. The performance on foot was pretty much fine but then you're dealing with the absurdly low FoV which completely gimps the scale of the visuals and feels claustrophobic.

Hmm. Did you play on the base ps4 by any chance?

Of the games I played this year the two that impressed me the most were Modern Warfare on the PS4 Pro, and Gears 5 on the XB1X.

Both pushing near native 4K and running at a mostly solid 60fps, with incredible HDR and lots of effects. Can't wait to see what the next gen consoles bring starting next year!

I don't think Indirect Diffuse Lighting in Control is the same as RTGI in Metro Exodus.
It's not. It builds on top of the voxel based GI they made for Quantum Break. It looks much better than what's there with it off, but it isn't as precise as what Metro does. As I understood DFs explanation, Control adds an RT step to its GI but Metro's GI is 100% RT (if you enable the option) start to finish.

These guys are obsessed with ray tracing. Not denying it's damn cool, but yeah lol. I don't really think Metro looks all that amazing outside of the RT.

Metro Exodus with Ray Tracing looks incredible. Wish they would have included ray traced reflections. "Old" screen space reflection solution breaks the otherwise great visuals. Lighting and shadows are insane.

Control on the other delivers on everything but it doesn't look just quite that spectacular due to Metro's dynamic day and night cycle and exteriors.

Death Stranding and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare are the best from what I played this year.

COD absolutely shocked me, was not expecting it to look so good. One of the best of the gen.

One of those years where I don't think I could say this game here is a clear winner. I like various things from Control, Metro and Death Stranding.

DMC5 in terms of striking art design and life blood of the characters coming through is something I've had in my mind, it's how I would've executed an action game to look today. It's very stimulating visually and something that I just feel thrilled exists that I can cherish and keep appreciating. It's like a lighting bolt of creation in video game making.

Days Gone is an Unreal Engine title, and Gears 4 did it 'better' at 60fps, etc.

I can't wait for Death Stranding PC.

Death Stranding was really bland graphically. I realise that on a technical level it is impressive and the "blandness" was an artistic choice, other games such as Gears 5 impressed me more.

Playing A plague tale since yesterday, and wow, how did they create such a beautiful engine? And apparently they are behind Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020??
These guys are going places.

When DMC5 is firing on all cylinders - best environments, tons of enemies, particle effects, wild animation systems going on, on top of running 60 fps, even on a base Xbox One... It's pretty fucking great.

Death Stranding looks amazing though. It's mostly flexing it's environmental scale and not much else, but those vistas look great.

And these are pretty low quality gifs / images. But I didn't want to put something that's a big file size here.

Good picks overall, I'd personally favor control over Metro Exodus. Exodus was excellent from a technical perspective graphics wise but the art design is pretty ugly IMO and not in a good way necessarily. Still really enjoyed the game though.

Control married ray tracing with excellent art design. Death Stranding is truly impressive for a console game.

Gears 5 was very impressive from a technical standpoint. I still can't get over those character designs though. That's just a personal taste thing though. I was very impressed with how great the levels looked though and for how smooth it ran considering the amount of effects it was pushing.

This. Best HDR I've seen too. More impressive than Gears 5.

The sunsets, the bike lamp, just incredible. Oh and the world detail. It is absolutely one of the best looking video games released in the year 2019.

Did DF even mention it? (Haven't watched video)

Modern Warfare isn't even mentioned? That game looks insane even without RTX. Definitely a top contender.

Days Gone is the best looking game this year, easily.

Metro is bland as fuck, yes it has RTX bling, but those effects/enhanced lighting don't save the visuals for me.

Both DMCV and Death Stranding also look far better than Metro.

The shout out for Gears 5's HDR is well deserved, really makes makes the game stand out, especially after playing Control before hand. Also it's exciting to think what their list next year will look like. Will TLOU and Cyberpunk make it or will the next gen titles completely outshine them?

Love the praise for Gears 5 being Jonhs number 2 pick. Best HDR of the year they agreed on :) let's see what Gears 5 with RT on XSX looks ;)
Coalition mastered UE4 on current gen. It's amazing what they did with that game, also on Xbox One.
I wonder what they will do with all the power of the XSX, our eyes will melt.

Count me in the Days Gone was one of the best looking games this year camp.
I also liked Death Stranding and RE2 along with A Plague Tale. These games are just beautiful.

Next year will be Ghost of Tsushima most definetly. That game has it all.

Since they're personal choices I'm not going to argue or disagree with them

I'll just say while It never gets any credit I was quite amazed at the graphics in F1 2019. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare looked incredible also Call of Duty: Modern Warfare had the best audio design of any game this year. Was also taken aback at how good Mortal Kombat 11 looked as well :).

I would end with saying Death Stranding isn't just the best-looking game this year but of this generation on the consoles Sadly it's also the most borning game of this generation too ;)

I would love to see someone like Digital Foundry deep dive into complex animation & interaction systems.

Whenever a typical game graphics discussion comes up I always favor the games that push the benchmark in that category.
The reason being that it is the most broad and cross-discipline heavy challenge in gaming. It combines A.I, physics, environmental conditions, game design and rendering.

The ray-traced GI in Metro Exodus is great but it's an achievement that has a lot to thank Nvidia R&D for and the extra iron in your gaming box. A single rendering developer or two probably came up with that GI solution in a reasonable amount of time. And similarly it could be easily implemented in other games and the switch can be flipped.
But when you compare that to the animation system in i.e. Assassin's Creed it is a very small effort as that animation system likely involved dozens, maybe hundreds of people and years of research on the developers part as it involves all aspect of the game. Due to that reason the implementation cannot simply be exported/imported/quickly-re-created either as it needs to be tailored for the particular game.
