Loved this game! I remember being so happy when I unlocked the revolver in multiplayer. The online trophy requirements were bonkers!

I'd love for some sort of Battle Royale with this artwork and setting. Rolling through cities in a gritty sci-fi setting like this would be great.

If I remember correctly the multiplayer maps were kinda large in size. I remember a specialist that could throw respawn points adding to the insanity.

I've always surprised killzone 2's cover mechanic didn't take off for other FPS games. I though the hold a button to pop out but stay stuck to the code was cool and something you didn't see a lot of outside 3rd person perspectives

(unless im forgetting examples)
It's present in a lot of games, just more refined and sensible as it's contextual. Instead of having to press a button to stay in cover you just stand against a wall or crouch in front of a chest high wall and when you ADS you automatically pop out of cover to take shot and when you let go of it you go back in the cover. You can see it in Farcry, Battlefield, Call of Duty infact majority of FPS games this gen.

Wolfenstein kind of does this but also different in that it asks you to hold a button and when you do you can lean left right or pop up or down.

Will watch later. Killzone never really grasped me. Those games bored me really quick which was a shame because I kinda liked the universe.

Would love a remaster of KZ 2 & 3 on PS4 or PS5. 4k resolution at 60fps would really make these games shine, as they still look gorgeous today.

Hopefully GG aren't completely done with Killzone and can give it new life in the future. Shadow Fall had decent gameplay and was technically sound, it's just a shame the story was so weak, which let it down.

I remember being at a gaming convention and I was told to find a guy dressed as a Helghast. He took me to a back room where KZ2 was being shown and I got to play the demo. I remember thinking it actually looked better than the pre-render one some ways, and I see I wasn't exactly wrong. I was especially hyped that the real game had actual blood.

I wish we got a remaster of these, too. The Pro might be able to manage 2160cb at 60fps, that would be a hell of a sight. Not to mention how cool a VR mode would be.

It's strange that Killzone 2 and 3 was never remastered. They're quite unique feeling. At 60fps and ~4K I bet KZ2 would still hold up surprisingly well.

Killzone 2 mp was outstanding. As if Blade Runner and Team Fortress 2 had a baby but with the game's Warzone MP changing game types on the fly during the match. Loved the classes with support robotics like turrets and drones.

I've never had very much interest in ANY kind of multiplayer, least of all FPS multiplayer, but I sank dozens of hours into KZ2 online. It was gorgeous, exciting and tons of fun... and there was no additional cost to play online (those were the days!)

Killzone is a weird franchise.

The lore is legitimately interesting, yet the games fail to really capitalize on it. I could never tell if Guerilla was intentionally setting up a morally grey universe where the protagonists are arguably the "bad guys," or if it was something they accidentally stumbled into due to bad writing. The Killzone 3 intro came across like "oh shit we made the Helghast too sympathetic," then Shadow Fall came along and backpedaled towards a "both sides" theme again.

Anyway, great video! In hindsight I think that Killzone 2 might be the best looking PS3 game. The Naughty Dog games are starting to look like worse versions of current-gen games, whereas Killzone 2 still stands out due to its very unique art direction.

I'm surprised John didn't make a joke about the protagonist coming across as a midget due to the way they mounted the player camera on his crouching model.

It's actually surreal to look at this and see how obviously... dated it is. Yes, it makes sense, it's 10 years old, but looking back at graphically groundbreaking games that looked "real" at the time and having their shortcomings immediately jump out is always weird.

I'll say it, Killzone 2 was a damn fine game from a tech and multiplayer standpoint, and I would like to see a port to newer systems, but if there was one other game in the franchise that probably deserved it more, it would be Killzone Liberation. It's certainly the most interesting game in the series, in what it tries to do, having to deal with the PSP's lack of a second analogue stick, an I think having to work around that limitation helped it excel in my eyes.

Doesn't look dated to me. Many features highlighted in this episode aren't present in current gen FPS games.

Killzone 2 was probably the most amazing-looking game I'd ever seen at the time. I'd replay the second mission over and over because the visuals and spectacle were so incredible.

Still looks great today, IMO. In some ways, it has aged way better than the CG trailer.

I think it looks surprisingly impressive still, mostly due to its bleak, oppressive atmosphere and art design. Visually it's still a very well executed game.

Highly mediocre experience to be honest though masked by amazing graphics at the time. And that final boss is trash.

Dark1x You mentioned KZ2 uses MSAA but I thought it used Quincunx AA, which is what gave it its overly blurry look.

The line right after it he says "sure it is of of the Quincunx variety" I think.

The biggest waste of graphics and fictional universe ever. The game looks amazing even to this day, and the Killzone universe has never been better represented. It's really cool. Too bad they couldn't make a more interesting game.

Visually superb game that drove me bonkers due to a tragic amount of input lag.

I had forgotten how dynamic those levels were though. Great stuff (and I have no idea how you completed this video in just 2 or 3 days!) Dark1x

The game had lots of input lag, but not total unplayable, but the game also came out at a time where TV's had enormous amount of input lag of their own. So combine killzone with HDTV's of that era, and you have a game that unplayable to many. I know whats how I felt when I played the game for the first time on a 1080p TV that had loads of input lag. I need to revisit this game though, I think I could enjoy this game more now, then I did back then.

Such an amazing showcase for the ps3. I'm still baffled by the intro when a ship flies though some smoke and you can see it get all churned up through the engines.

Such an incredible game. I'm glad it got the critical acclaim it did; it was much deserved. One of the best FPS games of all time.

Even today it holds up. They did add an option for more responsive input lag, which does help quite a bit. But, the input lag never really bothered me that much but I know it annoyed some people. I really do wish Sony remastered Killzone 2 and 3. Killzone 3 wasn't nearly as good as Killzone 2 but it was still a damn good game.

Awesome, awesome video Dark1x! Keep up the great work!

FYI Dark1x, the MP is still (sort of) available with bots.

It's a shame what they did to the MP in KZ3, chasing that COD money.

Can you elaborate? Positive or negative? Today, if this screen was released for a game in 2019 we'd probably pick apart the blocky shadow being cast by the muzzle flash lol

Man, pixelated shimmering shadows bothered the hell out of me even back then. It was one of those "one step foward, two steps back" tech progressions that felt too jarring compared to previous implementations that while more primitive didn't wear their fidelity-to-performance concessions on their sleeve like that.

PS3 OS and online functionality all being fragile syrup...
Killzone 2 input lag & games of that gen in general often missing their framerate target...
HDTV lag...

Things massively improved this generation.
Next-gen with a Zen 2 CPU & HDMI 2.1 we will likely see 60fps be very commonplace.

This was a great game with some shitty input lag. But I played the MP loads and while it was completely unbalanced and classes were gated behind levels it was a blast.

I really played alot of this game when it came. I fell in love with FPS all over again since Halo 1 on Xbox. I remember I got pretty good at it in Online also, and that felt amazing at the time. This video brought back memories! Thank you! I really would apriciate a ps4/5 remaster/remake.

I loved this game so much. I beat it on two of the hardest difficulties and loved every moment and I played like 150+ hours of MP with a clan.
I still remember the mass amount of messages I got a month before release when I got the press copy. Playing the game so early on was awesome!

The game was one of the few that felt like it has nvidia physx turned on on a consoles. Red faction Guerilla is the only other one that I can think of.

Killzone 2 was the reason I bought an high def TV. I thought "well if this game is supposed to have the 'best graphics ever', then I should experience them." No regrets. I still remember being in aw while playing it.

I really enjoyed KZ2 despite the flaws. The game looked amazing and the input lag didn't really bother me. Outside of the texture and shader work, it holds up really well today.

Awesome video John! Crazy to think of the PS3 as a retro console but it is old at this point.

KZ2 and Resistance 3 have the best campaigns last generation. KZ2's multiplayerans Warhawk were the best as well.

I'm hoping Sony brings back Killzone for the PS5. Just don't rush it to launch like they did Shadowfall.

Warzone mode was an absolute blast to play, and I say that as someone who seldom plays online FPS modes. The slower pace and things changing up made it very managable for me. I do remember one capture the flag time when I was protecting the person holding the flag and he had no idea where he was going at all, I think that was my only time of voice chat rage :)

It's impressive how a lot of details still look pretty damn good, if Guerilla return to this scale and tone for another Killzone it could probably do quite well, but they need better mission design and writers to help it cross the line into true classic.
