Why is there controversy surrounding CD Projekt Red and Cyberpunk 2077?

CD Projekt Red has a history of transphobia. This is well documented at this point and not a matter of debate. Due to this context there is particular concern about transphobic or insensitive content in Cyberpunk 2077 itself, such as the decision to tie gender to voice in the character creator, and trans fetishization in illustrations in the game—and these are just examples from prerelease footage. Additionally, there have been concerns about racist imagery and stereotyping. This article goes into depth about some of these issues.

What incidents of transphobia have occurred surrounding the game and the company, and why are they hurtful?

This list will be updated over time as more examples come to light, especially as the game releases and more content is uncovered. If you wish to have something added to this list, please send me a DM and get my attention.

Why is ResetEra allowing an official thread for this game?

There has been a lot of discussion about whether there should even be an official thread for Cyberpunk 2077, and many points of view were considered for this decision. Ultimately, a thread like this can serve as a platform for minority concerns to be aired and discussed respectfully, and given appropriate attention. We've also heard from minority members, including some trans members, who have asked for a space where they can talk about the game without needing to worry about trolling and bigoted posting. We expect all posters in the thread to extend the consideration and empathy to give them that space. We will be moderating as strictly as necessary to make sure they do.

What can I do to help fight transphobia?

Transphobia exists in many aspects of our lives. From casual discrimination such as the continuous misuse of a person's preferred pronouns, to more serious ramifications such as housing being denied, legal rights being taken away, and being discriminated in the legal system. Every trans person either has experienced transphobia in their lives, or will experience transphobia at some point.

Moreover, transphobia is a systematic issue that is present in every level of our society. Politicians fight to take away our rights. Celebrities use coded language and religious justifications, if not outright hostility, in order to continue to deny our existence. Media continues to portray us as the butt of a joke, or acts like we're something to be fascinated by, rather than treated with respect.

Actions speak louder than words: Become active in your local politics, donate to transgender causes, stand up for these issues wherever they arise, and if you know transgender people in your life be there for them and support them.

Here are some pro-trans organizations around the world where you can make a donation and show your support
  • For those of you in the US, The Trevor Project is one of the leading LGBT organizations. They are dedicated to crisis intervention and suicide prevention for people who are in need of support, love, and care.
  • For those of you in the UK, Mermaids is dedicated to the support of transgender, non-binary, and gender-diverse children, young adults, and their families. They have been around since 1995, and have been one of the most vocal voices speaking out against transphobia in the UK, including showing the dangers that transphobia imposes upon our youth.
  • If you would like to donate to CDPR's native country of Poland, you can find the Trans-Fuzja Foundation website here. The Trans-Fuzja Foundation has been around since 2008, and is dedicated to the support of transgender people in Poland in many aspects of life and society, including politics.
We are your friends. We are your family members. We're your coworkers. We're the people you meet on the street. We're the essential workers who keep society running in a pandemic. We're everywhere. We're not some sort of freak or joke, and we're not going away.

I want to give major thanks to Uzzy for lending her talent, time, and effort in putting together graphics and material for this official thread. Without her, this would not have been possible on such short notice. I would also like to give a shout out and thanks to Kyuuji for allowing me to use images and links from her own thread for this posts.

Wonder if the DLC will include Morgan Blackhand

i fuckin hope so, at least in some capacity. ive already spoken at length about how bummed i was
not to see him in any of the flashbacks or interludes (even if the suggested in-game explanation is fine).
was something i was looking forward to as a 2013/2020 fan prior to the game.

Went nuts trying to figure out this Delamain quest. Even made a wall of cars to try and stop one of the taxis. Turns out its just bugged for me and I can't complete it...

He also randomly shows up in the background of some of my phone calls too. Is this a bug or is he a rogue AI taking over my phone? WHO KNOWS!

Finally got around to getting the Cyberpunk car in Horizon 4. Whens the reverse cross over where we get the handling for it from Horizon 4 into Cyberpunk?

Just got the title screen. I have a question.

How is the chip and Johnny associated? I get that the chip triggered Johnny's mind to overtake V's but why is the chip associated with him specifically?

Which one is that? A few of them just require being close to them so maybe it's that but some of the quests are bugged it wouldn't surprise me

You'll see it in the scene right after the title drop. And a bit more explanation as the story goes on

Right, I just saw the scene but I might have missed it from Vik.

I have been bouncing back and forth. I am having a hard time finding visual differences between the two. I do know for fact that AI Pedestrians/Vehicles are running equal to the High Setting on PC where as the Performance mode seems to be equal to Medium on PC. There are some scenes where when I switch back and forth that the grain in some textures is a lot less. With the 1.04 patch I know DF said that Quality was running at a much higher resolution...but I think since 1.05 Performance was increased a bit.

I am switching back and forth so many times though....there are times where they look identical and other times where i find Quality looks better (the grain in some textures). But then in Performance you just get that raw smoothness where it makes the visuals look good. I need to have DF do another analysis to see what other things that I may be missing between the two settings. I would say 75% of my time has been in Quality because I really like the world filled with (brain dead) AI walking around and a ton more vehicles driving around.
I'm still toggling every now and then as well and it's definitely resolution, ambient occlusion and reflections.
SSR seems to be a setting higher on Quality, you get longer/stronger reflections which is noticeable at night with rain.
Plus reflections during day time get some weird noise where it looks like TV static, those are smoothed out on Quality mode.

And possibly volumetric lighting.I don't know if it's just a timing issue but I noticed that some lights "glow" a little more on Quality mode.

But yeah it's still all so minor that I'm mainly on performance mode.

Some people are saying you shouldn't be expecting Deus Ex-level open-ended mission design in this game, but honestly some of the gigs do manage to feel like Deus Ex-lite in terms of level design.

There aren't vent shafts everywhere and shit, but once you get double jump you can approach gig locations from almost any angle, and often there's an open window on the roof or an unlockable back door or something. Sometimes it even feels a little Mirror's Edge-ish. From there it kinda depends on how you choose to hack things, which is really becoming the game's strongest point gameplay-wise for me.

Outside of that the regular gigs are sort of like Fallout/Elder Scrolls dungeons -- you just go in and loot them.
Haha I just somehow managed to jump off a skyscraper because the elevator wasnt working due to some bug. This game is wonky yet amazing at the same time.

It's a bug and it's permanently glitched all my holo phone calls since that mission

That's weird seems to be a bug with hud elements since that's what is blacked out. Most of my bugs were HUD based (that and cars spawning in the ground) so I hope they iron those out quickly.

Despite all the bugs, crashes, dumb AI, and all the other crap wrong with this game, I really enjoy the story, and I can't stop playing it. I will definitely do a second playthrough when the PS5 version comes out.

Gaaaah, game didn't stick the landing for me. I love Cyberpunk as a genre but all the options were very paint-by-numbers as far as creativity goes.

Enjoyed my time with it big time but the core storyline just didn't get to the heights it should have.

Johnny is such a huge fucking disaster that I'm kind of bummed the whole game isn't about him in his glory days and leading right up to the tower attack.

Would have been great.

They probably did not go too far into his backstory, motivations and overall personality possibly because the CP 2020 P&P game covers this. Some of his stuff was changed though, but it would have been nice to delve deeper into seeing more for people new to the series. Though if you do some of the side gigs and he shows up, there are snippets of events and his ideas that he talks about.

I was pretty down on my experience with this before but after going back and completing the other endings I warmed up to it a lot more. As many wrpgs I've played I feel like a dunce for not discovering the alternate paths to the ending during my first playthrough, specifically...

the Panam and Johnny focused routes. Holy shit those endings were a lot more satisfying, and Johnny's arc in particular leading up to it was so much more engaging than the Hanako/Arasaka one. The only thing I would've changed is the choice to have V's VO being the predominant one during the times Johnny is in control. You've got all these moments of Johnny throughout the game and the playable flashback on the initial raid of Arasaka before his death made it jarring to just hear V with a muffled Johnny on top of it. I feel it took away from Johnny's redemption arc to just hear V's voice during all these Johnny controlling V segments. Like I get the in world explanation is you're in V's body so why would the voice change, then again this is a world of implants and AR overlays, and if you can see and hear Johnny via the chip why that couldn't carry over into your perceived voice being changed to his is a puzzling bit of logic.

I think my favorite ending is probably the one post Johnny-Arasaka raid where you as Johnny choose to sacrifice yourself, with V waking up in the swank high rise pad. That ending shot of her going out into space towards the casino was just :chefskiss.

I hope the dlc expands on the aftermath of the three endings, something with Panam in their new life outside NC, or the heist on that orbital casino. I can see why they'd want to leave those somewhat ambiguous as to the outcome though, sense of wonderment and all that.

Also one area I think ripe for a dlc story that I feel was underutilized in the game is exploring the virtual space that Alt is a part of (name?). It could make for a good psych horror story similar to Observer, with a mix of the Matrix-like visuals and more real world visuals interspersed, not knowing necessarily what's real or being manufactured by the simulation. Alternatively just something about existence in this construct, something Raised by Wolves touched on.

I tried the legendary ping and contagion combo on some missions where the enemies were 10 levels above me. It's a little harder. Instead of one contagion wiping out a dungeon it takes like four.

Honestly reminds me of Witcher 3, where combat only got really interesting when fighting monsters 15 levels above you.

I'm in act 2 now, and I have to say, I haven't been this impressed by an urban environment in a game since GTA IV. Exploring Night City is an incredibly immersive experience.

Outside of a few visual oddities, my experience has also been almost completely bug-free. Started with patch 1.06 on Series X.

Can someone explain Contagion? Sometimes I'm detected, sometimes I'm not.

Once you drop the Contagion, it dials up the alertness of the target and all who can see the target - that means their detection range and speed of detection go up, so you probably stealthed just outside their normal range and then got caught inside the alerted range. You can buy a piece of cyberware early on called Synapse Accelerator that slows time when you are detected, that should be more than enough to move out of range or into full cover.

Huh, so is Vik gouging V?

You get marked up for a 21K debt when he gives you two pieces of cyberware... but a Mark II Kiroshi (one version up from what he installs) goes for 3000 eddies and a Ballistic Oppressor is worth 9000. Biz is biz, I guess. Or maybe some quest designer made a typo and turned 12,000 into 21,000...

Worldbuilding aside, I also question the design here: the debt is a bit of an odd thing because it locks Vik's cyberware clinic for you but he's the main source of early, non-rare enhancements. I'm guessing most players no longer need his services by the time they generate enough money to pay him back (without grinding for it / handicapping themselves in the early game), because they could put that money straight into better wares than what he offers.

I feel like the start of Act 2 is a good time to shelf this. I really like a lot of parts here but I am playing Valhalla at the same time and something has to give. Valhalla, surprisingly, is less buggy than this, so perhaps it's better to go there and finish that up. By the time that's done, CP will probably be in great shape.

After modding the car behavior, crowd handling, HUD RGB values, controller ini, and implemented toggles for scanning and removed the crouch vignette, I realized I'll just fucking wait until February and see what's fixed and what isn't. 😂 I am solidly in Act 2 as well.

i remember this mision and as far as i remember you can actually go into the compound as a "driver" of a delivery truck, which i thought made the guards not to aggro when seeing you since, well you entered the area "legally"

once you steal whatever you got there to steal they immediately became hostile or somthing,

so other than the npc walking on air, i dont think is a "stealth bug"

not that the stealth is not in need of improvement

The final mission of this game was the buggiest mission I've gotten all game. Like, non functioning weapons, enemies disappearing and getting stuck, preventing progress, dialogue getting hung, ui getting hung, etc.

Was the worst exp to get through. Hopefully the next couple times aren't as bad smh.

Is there a way to level my character a bit faster? I'm 70ish hours in and I'm still at level 36 with max street cred. It's so slow to level my character.

EDIT: Also, is there a guide on how to level perks? I'm trying to level Annihilation, Engineering, and Athletics, but progress has been grueling.

Wow she looks awesome. How much dialogue does she have? Does she perform music at all?

edit: nvm watched on youtube. Liam Northom, kind of similar to Elon Musk, or am I reaching? I did not see, however, if she ever performed any music. Game doesn't look so good from what I saw, but it's cool that Grimes and Keanu are in it.

edit2: ok the screenshot photos people are posting look good but they look nothing like the vid I watched. Maybe I was watching someone playing on a console?
