Crunchyroll and the production companies of Idris Elba and his wife, Sabrina, are joining forces for an animated fantasy series with the working title Dantai. It is the first producing collaboration by the pair, who married in 2019.

The news about the project comes as Crunchyroll also reports surpassing four million subscribers. The WarnerMedia anime specialist is in the process of being sold to Sony's Funimation in a $1.2 billion deal.

Crunchyroll passed three million subscribers just last summer. At that time, it added two higher-level subscription tiers beyond the $8-a-month "Fan" basic tier. The $10 "Mega Fan" and $15 "Ultimate Fan" plans have been "very successful" and comprise a "significant portion" of the overall subscriber base, a company rep told Deadline. The company has not broken out numbers by level.

"For more than a decade, through anime and anime-inspired originals, Crunchyroll has been leading the charge for the popularization of adult dramatic animation and we are fast becoming the epicenter for the next generation of animation fans, as is evidenced by our incredible growth in registered users and subscribers" said Joanne Waage, Crunchyroll's GM. "Gens Y and Z have experienced superhero fatigue and are hungry for the new stories and ideas that our creators tell. This development deal with Sabrina and Idris Elba is another example of how we're working with best-in-class partners to bring in new audiences and tell fresh and compelling stories through a medium that transcends genres and generations."

Described as a "dark fantasy" and an "Afro-futuristic science fiction series," Dantai comes from Idris Elba's Green Door Pictures and Sabrina Elba's Pink Towel Pictures. Each is an executive producer.

The series will be set in a city where the rise of biotechnology has created an "ever-widening gap between the haves and have-nots," according to the official logline. "Two rising stars from either side of this divide are pitted against each other in a story that will ultimately explore equality and kinship within a corrupt society."

The price AT&T sold CrunchyRoll for still seems to be a big talking point.

It's either AT&T absolutely fleeced Sony by charging them well over the odds or the Japanese corporation got a pretty good deal for a platform with lots of potential.

I think we'll see in the next year or two whether Sony got a good deal or not.

I'm down.

Please be better than Canon Busters.

Also if you're gonna go with Polygon Pictures (which they almost assuredly will) please give them a decent budget so it ends up looking more like Drifting Dragons and less like Berserk.

"Afro-futuristic science fiction series"

Uh, yeah, sign me up.

I'm hopeful Idris wouldn't sign off on some bullshit looking Netflix level CGI garb.

Has any Crunchyroll original not been terrible?

I mean, I don't know if the actual moniker means anything anymore as it seems like its just them publishing overseas. Like, Spider-chan is an original, but that show was going to be one of the biggest of the season regardless of CR's involvement. A lot of people I know, myself included, consider it to be the only good Isekai.

Tower of God though, unifying anime fans everywhere in collective hatred.

A lot of translators are saying "please pay me" in response to the 4 mil subs.

CR apparently pays like shit to translators.

Hopefully its better than Cannon Busters. Was really excited for that show and it landed with a wet fart. What a disappointment.

As long as it has better production values than that other Crunchyroll made anime, Ex-Arm.

AT&T sold the largest (I assume) anime streaming service with 4 million paying subscribers for $1.2 billion. That is roughly $300 per subscriber, which is significantly on the cheaper end for a streaming service.

Honestly, very curious about that decision for AT&T.

As excited as I am for both this and Yasuke, I wish there were more black characters from Japan. So far it's basically Americans deciding that we like anime enough to make it ourselves in the anime style. And contracting Japanese studios.

I am really happy about *this*, mind - I also just want the other thing too. But the odds are low, so.

Really curious what that average life of a subscription and churn rate is.

I was a subscriber for years despite not watching anything just to support the industry. I re-subbed with AoT S4 but may cancel once it's done. Can't quite seem to find anything of interest as I get older.

What was the issue with Tower of God besides the pacing? Or did people genuinely hate the pacing that much?

Oh? I ignored it on GP. Maybe I'll give it a look then.

I think they are referring to what is above in SnakeBurton745's spoiled text.

Fuck Rachel

This show was pretty good.
Man I feel like Vincent Vega in the cafe at the end of Pulp Fiction.

"Bam if you try to forgive her after this I will chop her head off on general principle."

On one hand I'm all for more afrofuturism. On the other hand, Crunchyrolls other original "adult" anime has been nothing more than gory schlock, so I hope this is different

Hopefully it's not some CG anime, ever since Berserk 2016 as soon as I see a remotely CG anime character I get flashbacks to that abomination of an adaptation.

On the subject of Crunchyroll originals, I tried watching Nobellese and as soon as I watched the first five minutes with the typical Bad-Guy-Squad-That-Has-A-Guy -Who- Licks- His- Knife I knew I wasn't going to bother with that crap. I liked Tower Of God but it wasn't the best anime out there (It was good, just not great outside of a few characters I liked). They need better material and a production team that gives a damn about it, plus the time to get it right rather than rushing it out the door. Something like David Production for Jojo.

Since Crunchyroll is now part of Sony and Funimation, hopefully the service improves.

My first exposure to a Crunchyroll original was Ex-Arm...

My biggest fear is that Ex-Arm is like The Room where they legit thought they were making the next sci-fi animated smash that would embarass Akira and GiTS, and now future projects will be like Wiseau's other films where he fully endorses the "lol it's bad on purpose" mantra and they're just forgettable.

What I'm basically saying is they should get Neil Breen who is straight up to god authentic in smelling his own farts to direct a Crunchyroll anime.

Man I saw 1 episode of that mess and just laughed.

Someone thought that thing was going to be the next big anime. That person was WRONG.

I wish it wasn't based on a pre-existing manga because the plot so far is serviceable and generic...

Really wanted to see what someone producing that animation and thinking it was master class would go with in terms of writing.

Is it? I think this is original.

It's not this.

Nah there's an Ex-Arm manga, which you're reminded of when there's manga-style drawings used as the eycatch.

Not sure how far the anime is following its plot but I know it exists.

Crunchyroll originals have so much trouble getting off the ground. Historically anime English coproductions are bad and will always struggle to find a audience. The biggest anime shows are also stuff with existing source material.

Just spent 5 minutes laughing at the definition of isekai on urbandictionary when I looked it up.

I really needed that today. 🤣

Japan's population is too homogeneous. There's no real push from its population for my diversity and their home country is their real base.

Maybe it's me, but $300 per subscriber seems way too pricey unless the licensing cost is expected to go down significantly.
