He's obviously wrong about that being why it failed, but I'm not sure I'm following how that makes him an asshole. Isn't he complaining about people getting hung up on the bathrooms instead of caring about the game? That's absolutely something some idiots on the internet do, it's just not what killed the game in this instance,

Blitzball was a great mode, character designs were just meh and the game was more complicated than it needed to be, also it got like 0 marketing budget, and came out at a terrible time. "woke" is the last thing i'd use to describe the game.

Gone full Trump, or is he talking about the shitty reaction tweets about the game? If you read the (very brief) article it's pretty clear.

From the article:

One big epiphany I had was that I pushed my own personal political beliefs in a world that was increasingly divided

Dude wanted whatever version of diversity in his game, and it was one thing the shitty internet latched on to. Obviously the game had other issues (timing, competition, etc) but OP is entirely misrepresenting what is said here.

Reactionary OP is unnecessary for the contents of the article.

He's saying that making a game that reflects his politics was a business mistake, which certainly paints him as a cowardly fool, but it doesn't turn him into any kind of Trumpet.

Lawbreakers is so insignificant that at first I thought "Wait, wasn't Lawbreakers the game where the devs tried to promote rule34 porn for it?" But no, that was Battleborn, another game that died in obscurity.

Wasn't Lawbreakers kinda good?

I heard good stuff outside of it bombing because nobody really cared.

Being woke (i didn't even know it was supposed to be woke) suerly wasn't the reason for its demise. Hero Shooters weren't that hot anymore when it released.

lol. he's always been like this - man with a giant ego who released fun games. except - the last time he released a good game was 2011. that's a long time.

I'll take out the trumper part, but throwing inclusitivity under the bus as any kind of reasoning that a game fails reeks of cowardice. that's the kind of thing that pisses me off

The characters were a bonus for me, I didn't play the game because it looked too hardcore for me, and I'm no longer into FPS like I was tow generations ago. I can't even get into Destiny 2.

Maybe I'm misinterpreting his comments, but they seem more critical of what the journalists allegedly focused on than they do of the need for diversity and inclusion.

It'd be like if you made an action movie with a diverse cast and were mad that people only ever talked about the diversity and not how cool the action was. It's a criticism of people focusing on something that you think isn't the crux of what you're making.

I mean, Cliffy seems deluded, of course. But I don't see his comments as being anti-diversity or pro-Trumper or whatever. I just see them as deluded.

Edit: just read the full article. It seems like he's not only confused about why his game did poorly, but thinks that him championing for better representation is the crux. It's an incorrect takeaway on both fronts.

Being "woke" didn't harm the game.

Only Cliffy B would complain his own game failed for being too woke, when literally no one ever mentioned how woke that game was

Rich white man is confronted by a moment of failure in his career.
Rich white man lashes out and blames everyone and everything for such a ludicrous pitfall instead of taking responsibility and learning.
Rich white man looks foolish and irrational.

Maybe Lawbreakers failed because his self-protective attribution bias prevented him from accurately assessing and adjusting to market conditions.

Nah it's gotta be the bathrooms.

Overwatch may act woke but I have yet to see them do anything but act that way. And considering Blizzard is the company making and supporting the game, nah...
The cast is pretty diverse. What more wokeness can you expect from a teambased shooter with no single player story campaign?

I wasn't interested in Lawbreakers the moment I heard the name tbh.
I respect your achievements Cliff, but no.

The game sucked. That's why nobody liked it. 🤔
It didn't. It was pretty fun.

But it didn't fail because people didn't like it or him, it failed because no one cared about it. They didn't do a good job hyping or marketing it, and when it came out, it was a super polished floaty old school style shooter, that no one was paying attention to and stepped over.

Also Cliffy B being an asshole is not news. The man craves attention and he gets in to twitter feuds over less than nothing.

I love how he says this as though Overwatch & Apex didn't make all kinds of diversity moves and become the huge and sustainable successes he wanted his game to be.

Okay, I don't love it.

Cliff "I don't understand why Gears has a reputation for being bro-y" Bleszinski doesn't actually have a handle on the tone of his games nor what the public likes or doesn't like?

I'm shocked, SHOCKED.

Anyway, the guy has been a tool, and continuea to be a tool. Money can buy a lot of things, but it can't buy you self-awareness.

I don't think representation was the issue for Lawbreakers. People just didn't find it very engaging or fun to play. There were other popular team based shooters. I think it's okay to be disappointed that something you poured your heart and soul into didn't find its way into popularity, but you're taking the wrong lesson out of this Cliff.

The cast is pretty diverse. What more wokeness can you expect from a teambased shooter with no single player story campaign?

Most of the 'wokeness' isn't even in the game but the stories they've told outside the game. In any case, Blizzard is a terrible company at this point and I have a hard time seeing anyone compliment them with what they've done over the past few years. Perhaps that's my issue.

Lawbreakers failed because people love to hate Cliff. There are other reasons. Very valid reasons. But this was and will always be the main reason.
Just look at the comments in the instagram post. He's being attacked by both conservatives and liberals. From one post, people are angry at him because the game should have been "unique instead of "woke" and push sjw politics into everything." Then others say things like "I don't recall a single 'woke' thing about LawBreakers. Just 'X-Treeeeeeme Mountain Dew Headshot Skillz!"."

I want to make sure If I understand the word Woke.
Isn't Woke a term used about being aware of the social issue? if not, I would love to know what Woke means.

Reactionary OP is exactly the kind of thing Cliff was referring to. People who hated on the game for every reason possible, even if unrelated to the game.
