A Christian school in Louisville expelled a student last week after her family said school officials discovered the girl had celebrated her birthday with a rainbow-themed cake.

Kimberly Alford told The Courier Journal that until Jan. 6, her 15-year-old daughter had been a freshman at Whitefield Academy, a private school at 7711 Fegenbush Lane that serves students in preschool through 12th grade.

That's when Alford said she received an email from Whitefield Academy's head of school, Bruce Jacobson, explaining how her daughter was being expelled "immediately due to a post on social media."

Alford had recently posted a photo on her Facebook page showing her daughter celebrating her birthday in late December at a Texas Roadhouse restaurant. In the photo, the girl is wearing a sweater featuring a rainbow design and sitting by a colorful, rainbow-themed cake.

Alford said someone shared the Facebook photo with Whitefield Academy officials.

In the email, Alford said Jacobson wrote that the picture "demonstrates a posture of morality and cultural acceptance contrary to that of Whitefield Academy's beliefs" and follows two years of "lifestyle violations."

But Alford said her daughter is not gay and the cake was simply a fun treat, with the bakery receipt listing the design as "assorted colors."

Alford added that the Whitefield Academy Parent Teacher Fellowship has even featured a rainbow image on its private Facebook page before later taking it down after the expulsion of her daughter.

"I just feel like it's a label (school officials) have put on her," Alford said. "Just because I'm wearing a rainbow doesn't mean I'm gay."

Jacobson, Whitefield Academy's head of school, told The Courier Journal that the expulsion came after "two years of continuous violations of our student code of conduct."

"Inaccurate media reports are circling stating that the student in question was expelled from our school solely for a social media post," the school said in a statement. "In fact, she has unfortunately violated our student code of conduct numerous times over the past two years."

The school added that, ""Whitefield Academy is accredited by ACSI/AdvancEd and a member of the Non Public School Commission of Kentucky, and therefore we meet all Kentucky regulations and laws. Our code of conduct is on pare with other private Christian schools in our area. It is unfortunate that one of the student's parents chose to post internal family matters on social media, and we hope our former student is not adversely affected by what her parents chose to make public about her situation."

Jacobson wouldn't say whether the photo of the rainbow cake and shirt led to the expulsion but said the girl had faced "a progression of discipline."

The handbook adds that students and their parents or guardians may appeal expulsions within three days.

Alford said her appeal was denied. She said Jacobson told her the cake and the sweater "just kind of represents gay pride" and that Alford "should have refused the cake."

I thought God gave Noah/Christians the sign of a rainbow after the great flood as a sign of new hope and never destroying the Earth again with Flood or something...

Social media post of herself out with family during a birthday party. Had nothing to do with school (wouldn't matter anyway if she had a rainbow cake at school) and they decided to make it known that they are totally backward POS.

Furthermore, she shouldn't even have to say "But I'm not gay!"

I'm actually floored that people can be THIS spiteful and ignorant.

It's almost a new low for bigotry for just how absurd it is.

to be fair, from the school:

"Inaccurate media reports are circling stating that the student in question was expelled from our school solely for a social media post," the school said in a statement. "In fact, she has unfortunately violated our student code of conduct numerous times over the past two years."

Seems like there is more to this story. This shouldn't of been something that was a last straw though.

How would a photo of a rainbow shirt and rainbow cake 'be the last straw' for expulsion.

that just makes it worse. Because that means she WAS partially expelled because of a rainbow, because it's against policy.

That is beyond "fairness" to the school.. It's mental gymnastics and there's no need to go there.

The school doesn't deserve the benefit of any doubts honestly.

if this is the last straw; the 'more' to this story could be equally stupid.

I know it's abstractly about fear and control, but it's insane to me the level of hostility that huge portions of the religious community display toward gay people.

How can you have that much hate in your heart? Isn't it exhausting? Never mind that it's in direct opposition to your stated Christian beliefs. Mind boggling every time.

This school epitomizes snowflakes. Imagining expelling a girl over some colourful cake.

Although the fact that she's not even gay is irrelevant, IMO, because even if she were, the school would still be regressive dipshits.

I completely agree. Frankly if this leads to more looking into this school it could be quite the win. Who know what other BS is going on in there.
Think you messed up your quotes there

Uh huh... bullshit. The idea that this in any way is "the last straw" says plenty about the school.

Just more Christians doing what Jesus would do.

Man, this can't be real. Like it's 2020 and people still bother about skin and sexual orientation that much, that they make decisions like this. Why.. just WHY?

Like if someone would've asked me 10 years ago if those things would still happen, I probably would've answered "no". I always said "in 10 years things like these will be nothing we will even think about anymore". Now I know that those things will still persist in 10, 20 years probably.

Do you really believe the school, when they just expelled her because she might be gay for liking rainbow colors?

The school's handbook is a hell of a thing (and, I realize, probably not unique among Christian schools).

Whitefield Academy's Biblical role is to work in conjunction with the home to mold students to be Christlike. On occasion, the atmosphere or conduct within a particular home may be counter or in opposition to the Biblical lifestyle the school teaches. This includes, but is not limited to, sexual immorality, homosexual orientation, or the inability to support Biblical standards of right and wrong (Rom. 1:18-32, I Cor. 6:9). If the home environment is not in harmony with the school's doctrinal belief in the centrality of Jesus Christ and the authority of Scripture and Biblical lifestyle, it will be difficult for the school to cooperate with the home and achieve the goal of a student becoming Christ-like. In such cases, the school reserves the right, within its sole discretion, to refuse admission of an applicant or to discontinue enrollment of a student.

Abstain from sexual activity or acting out. It is the Academy's belief in the Scriptural principal of marriage and as such believes that God intended for one man and one woman to be united in holy matrimony and that sexual intimacy is to be preserved, guarded and set aside for that relationship. Sexual conduct in any other context is inappropriate and will not be tolerated.

The inappropriate public display of affection such as embracing, hugging and kissing is prohibited.

In the case of severe discipline (expulsion, suspension) a student has an opportunity for mercy and grace through contrition. Contrition is therefore defined as a student's "recognition and repentance for sin". Whitefield Academy cannot presume to know who is truly contrite and who is not. Therefore, for the purposes of determining contrition: a student is contrite by confessing wrong doing before being called to accountability by the administration in any way.

Place sounds delightful.

This is what's scary about Trump's "Freedom of Religion" legislation. If the school claims it's their right as a religious school, then they're allowed to expell her.

Before I read the article I thought she was expelled for bringing a cake to school and not wearing a uniform or something lol The real story is even more wtf than that. Is this real life? Who the hell thinks rainbow = gay? I just thought it was a delicious cake :( Beyond that, classic pos admins probably making millions off of people (did you guys see how much tuition is? Ridiculous). Fuck private schools like this.

They might just have a policy of not posting on social media. Christian Schools do weirdo shit. Some old political book from Moore or someone like him talked about how its forbidden in some school a Man and Woman to be alone together or to hold hands and what not.

Not excusing the schools behavior just saying there is more to this story. Frankly if this story opens a light into it or brings down the school all the better. They are probably into other weird stuff too.

What fucking cowardly double speak. Just what you'd expect from bigots who know their bigotry isn't acceptable but do it anyway.

Shit, I only read the discipline section - the intro page of the school's guidelines is way worse:

--

Whitefield Academy fosters intellectual, moral, spiritual and social development consistent with a commitment to Christian truth, morals and freedom which has been provided by our Creator. Because Biblical objective truth directs the learning at Whitefield Academy we reject relativism and secularism that accompany political, ideological or philosophical agendas. Therefore, intellectual inquiry affirms the answers that Christianity offers. The ethical absolutes of the Ten Commandments and Christ's moral teachings guide the effort to develop intellect and character in the classroom, chapel, and co-curricular activities. While many points of view may be examined, the Whitefield Academy unapologetically advocates preservation of a uniquely Christian worldview.

Education is focused on truth, of which God is the ultimate source. He reveals himself to us in nature; in His Son; and in the Bible, the only inerrant, authoritative, and sufficient rule for faith and practice (Heb. 1:1-3; II Tim. 3:16,17)

Christian education is the result of all knowledge being tested against, and integrated with, a biblically based view of God and the world (2 Cor. 10:4b-5; John 1:3).

God reveals himself to students through revelation, both general and special. Through general revelation students learn of God and His world (Acts 14:17; Rom. 1:18-20). Special revelation and regeneration are regarded as essential components of Christian education because a personal relationship with Jesus Christ provides students with the ability to view life from a Biblical perspective (I Cor. 2:14).

Sounds like the girl has been done a favour by being expelled.
