It seems pretty solid to me! Just a handful of games won't work. I don't see much to complain about at all.
I wonder if that means games with unlocked framerate like FFXV and MHW can hit 60fps now?

Boost mode is a toggle that you can disable to make games run as they do on original hardware.
There is no functional difference between PS5 with boost mode enabled and Xbox in this regard. An uncapped game will benefit on Series X and PS5. A capped game will not.
Boost mode is a toggle implemented primarily for instances in which the extra horse power might cause issues. It never did on PS4 Pro, but its better to have the option given that there are 4000+ titles.
If you don't sub to ps+ and don't have cloud saves, this is how you'd move saves over.
If you don't want to redownload the games over Internet you can also transfer them wirelessly.
That means you can transfer your PS4 data (games, patches, saves and probably images / videos) using the Wifi connection of both consoles.
We always knew the list of incompatible games was going to be inconsequential so the biggest news for me is that digital games and saves can be transferred by wifi.

Nah. It's clear the PS5 was designed for this and that decision to include BC was probably made in like 2016 or so.
This wasn't a knee jerk response. Especially considering Sony has largely pursued backward compatibility when viable.

See, I got the opposite impression. Why wouldn't they say ps4 or playstation external drive rather than a ps5 drive? That makes me think the external drive has to be formatted by the ps5. Maybe I'm reading too much into it cause that would mean a ton of downloading for me.

That's exactly what I'm talking about.
Games that with capped framerates that usually dip should no longer dip and games with uncapped framerates will get a boost.
Same should happen with dynamic resolutions too.
Just don't download the update same as you can on ps4.
I do this with no mans sky as I prefer the vanilla version you the updated.
Not sure how updates work on digital games mine you as mine are all physical other than persona 5

No, the games are tied to your account. You can always redownload them.
Yes, you can play PS4 games off an external hard drive directly. Only PS5 games have to be on your SSD storage.
