Sci-Fi.

For some reason, I can't get into fantasy at all, whereas sci-fi will always grab me as long as the story's well told.

Fantasy for sure.

That being said, it's weird because I've never been able to get into Lord of the Rings.

They're both pretty appealing to me, but the world of fantasy has always been my escape, so I voted for that. The world of magic and swords and heroes fighting evil to save the day. Or adventurers going on a quest for fame, fortune, and glory~

Usually fantasy. Always felt like fantasy worlds are more unique and distinct than others, while most Sci-Fi worlds feel exactly the same as other Sci-Fi worlds. Rarely see any uniqueness within them that amazes me

I don't like fantasy settings in terms of say Warcraft but something like Final Fantasy IX I absolutely love.

In gaming there hasn't been one single game thats sci fi and has excited me outside of Mass effect series while i have quite a few fantasy series that i have wholeheartedly enjoyed.

When it comes to stories in general I can go with either, but for videogames in particular I always find fantasy worlds more interesting to explore, the enemy variety is usually more interesting and the combat tends to be melee focused, instead of the usual shooter / tactical RPG, which appeals to me more as well.

I also like contemporary settings more than sci-fi, like in the Persona games.

I think in games I often prefer fantasy because I think the setting lends itself better to more interconnected open environments. I think sci-fi games often feel more inclined to have the player hoping between many planets which can lead to each environment feeling under explored.

As an example, in a game like Mass Effect the developer really wanted to give players a sense of scale to fit the sci fi theme, so you only get a slice of each planet, but in Dragon Age Origins you get a much deeper delve into a specific area.

It doesn't always have to be that way, I think games like Horizon offer the best of both worlds but I think sci fi does push developers to stretch their themes thinner overall.

One of my very favorite things in anime or cartoons or whatever is fantasy with giant robots or fantasy where the ancient civilization is clearly sci-fi so I guess I like a mix. It's the year of sci-fi for me though so I'm going with that.

I can do Fantasy, but prefer Science Fiction. Hard Science Fiction not Science Fantasy.

I like both, but I don't typically care for either in their most generic form. I find the sterile future aesthetic to be pretty boring, and I think the classical Tolkeinesque fantasy setting is played out. Creativity is king.

I voted for fantasy but I actually can't stand elves and orcs anymore, so I dislike the post's framing. Fantasy is so much more than this tired stuff

I love them both.
Fantasy is great because it offers me an interesting adventure that scratches my wanderlust itch, to see and experience fantastical worlds and events.
However I've found that scifi stories are generally more engaging for me because the themes often relate to human experience that I can ponder, and in my increasing age I find it extremely interesting and important.

Ursula Le Guin said it best:

" Science fiction is not predictive; it is descriptive. "

My main reason for choosing fantasy is that fantasy settings usually involve melee weapons like swords and spears, whereas sci-fi settings almost always revolve around guns, and guns are lame. The exception I suppose would be stuff like Star Wars which prominently features (laser) sword fighting.

I like sci-fi more. Fantasy seems a little too repetitive or tropey sometimes. Not that sci-fi can't be tropey either, but I feel like sci-fi gives more freedom for authors to create their own frameworks from which to create new story angles. Fantasy can do it too, but it seems harder to do, and it's so easy to fall into just more swords and orcs and shit.

And in the end, I think I just like space more.

Sci-Fi

People in the future probably take more showers than in Fantasy settings, I think

I like both quite a lot. I used to like Sci-fi more but in recent years have skewed over to Fantasy more but not enough to pick one over the other in the poll. It also depends on the medium. For all games I prefer fantasy (though do have some huge favorites that are sci-fi) and for books harder sci-fi can be just wonderful and on a different level from fantasy. Movie and tv are a wash.

Really depends on the writing. These days fantasy is a tad played out for me, ooh swords and knights, getting stale. So fantasy in general vs sci fi in general I will take that.

Fantasy more often than not but I go through stages of preferring Sci-Fi sometimes. I appreciate when a setting combines them.

Both. I want to get lost in sci-fi and fantasy worlds. Mass Effect is a different experience than Dragon Age, but their settings appeal just as much as each other to me.

Sci-fi

I really don't care for traditional medieval-styled fantasy. That stuff is so tired and played out. If it's another kind of fantasy, I can dig that.

I like both almost equally. But I think science fantasy a la Destiny (as a more recent example) with space magic and space elves is more up my alley than both the individual genres on their own.

Pendantic: Sci-Fi can be fantasy (and I prefer my fantasy outside of medieval settings)

I also hate Tolkein m'lady fantasy since it's boring and has been pretty unimaginative since Tolkein was alive.

Fantasy! I really love nature aesthetics, trees, forests, natural materials, that sort of thing.

Both, but leaning more on sci-fi.

Especially sci-fi that heavily features more natural elements (like alien forests, strange worlds, etc) rather that straight up ships in space.

I like both but if I were forced to chose it would be fantasy.
Old school D&D and book cover style fantasy art still has a powerful effect on me.

Outside of gaming I definitely prefer sci-fi. Inside of gaming I don't have as strong of a preference, though I still voted sci-fi. Though thinking about it more, fantasy settings are generally more conducive to combat systems I have a greater fondness for (Melee combat vs. shooting). Disregarding that though it's a slight sci-fi preference.

I'm a Sci-Fantasy kind of gal...
After all, Classic Phantasy Star will always be my top rpg from the '90.

Now, real answer, Sci Fi, the closer to Space Opera the better... Which is a shame, because I don't see too many big games on that direction outside of Mass Effect/KotoR.

I would say I'm more sci fi BUT I think most fantasy stuff has been done better in the visual medium

It's harder for me to follow fantasy plots, because when you have Elves and Dwarves and stuff, I'm bringing in all my per-conceived ideas of how Elves and Dwarves are supposed to act from all other games and books and movies. Sci-fi games make up their own aliens. Even if they're just palette-swaps for Elves and Dwarves, I'm not thrown for a loop when the space-Elves are clumsy or the space-Dwarves aren't smithys.
