So Tekken 6 introduced us to Lars Alexandersson:

latest

who was intended to be the new main character after the previous protagonist Jin Kazama seemingly went rogue. However it appears that this didn't catch on as Tekken 7 focused on Kazuya and Heihachi with Tekken 8 returning Jin to the spotlight. Most discussions on Lars often talk about how he is a bad character and how much he is disliked. I was wondering, how come Lars failed to catch on?

I think he's become a weird poster boy for the oddball Tekken designs. Worse still is he's seen as a main character. Usually the weird looking characters are side characters in the overall story, but Lars is front and center with the robot who can use her head like a bowling ball.

He looks like a JRPG villain who is a guest character in Tekken.

I remember how for some random ass reason he was added as a guest fighter to one of the Naruto games, like wtf was up with that

OP, are you making book on Mishima family or something?

His design sucks but he is probabaly the only actual "good" Mishima.

1. Bad design.
2. He was the primary lead in a game advertised as the big showdown between Heihachi, Kazuya and Jin, and ends up feeling shoehorned in with the reveal that he's also a Mishima.

He's a tryhard loser with a robot girlfriend. Cringe.

If he wasn't a Mishima I think it would've been fine. I think trying to make him a big deal upon debut annoyed people. Which is a bummer for him because he's my favorite character to play in that game.

Awful design, and to me his name just doesn't fit a protagonist of a game like this for some reason.

That's enough, I think.

I would say "because he looks like a dork", but realistically, almost every Tekken character nowadays looks like a dork so that explanation doesn't hold water.

I actually really like Lars and his Goku ass hair.

I saw a Leroy dressed as Trunks online today, it was pretty fucking cursed.

To be real in answering the OP, Lars looks like a tryhard. His moveset is also tryhard with all the horizontal movement and lightning coming out of his ass. I'm more ambivalent than a hater but I see why he's easy to clown on.

Love the character and fighting style.

I also love how angry it makes people when they lose to him. Can't wait for the racist death threats to start pouring in again on release.

Edit: as seen in some characters polls he's pretty popular, but the people that hate him are super vocal about it.

He was peak wannabe Naruto meets Advent Children Cloud. And he just kinda waltzed into the spotlight during a mid-game update as a sort of amnesiac protag buddy-ing it up with a poor realization of Dr. B's daughter (too cornball anime) kinda fucked with the lore strengths for many. The concept of a bastard Hei child isn't the problem, just poor execution which was everything about the scenario writers from T6 onwards which REALLY made me want a job there once upon a time (and still).

Anime af design and sudden 'lol here's Heihachi's kid we never mentioned' definitely didn't help him. I like Lars though.

Hear this all the time. Music has sucked since this Tekken. Designs have sucked since that Tekken. Mechanics have sucked since Tekken whatever.

People calling this dude a tryhard when super edgelord Jin exists. I love Jin too.

I think the only character I've ever disliked in the series is Combot.

I also don't like that all the women look like porcelain dolls that never age.

I figured it was how he was shoehorned into the storyline as the (at the time) seemingly new lead protagonist of the series and the execution of said introduction:

-the advertisement for him and Alisa was essentially jiltch right up until just before the game released, which lead many to think the game's story would have Jin (or some other Mishima) to be the lead
-you were locked into playing through the story mode if you wanted to unlock the rest of the cast for other modes, so you felt 'forced' to have to deal with the pair (when the game was first released anyway, not sure if that was rectified with any subsequent releases).
-both of their stories were seen as bad and ends with Lars seeming falling in love with his robot companion, on top of being a secret son of Heihachi and possible only good Mishima, which probably bordered on Gary Stu levels for some in its execution
-their designs are seen as bad
-both characters were heavily pushed after, once again reenforcing that the story wanted them to be the two main leads moving forward (like Alisa being the secondary lead in the following Tekken movie after the game's release)

Personally, I'm over their designs (Tekken 7 certainly helped me in that department…) and I've been ignoring the Tekken story for a while now, so they don't bother me. Lars is fine to play as and Alisa has actually been one of my favorite newcomers gameplay wise since her introduction.

But then. . .I unironically like Lucky Chloe, so I may be the worst person to ask. XD
