Come on. You could have had a single option in that poll. Green is the all time coolest looking Ranger outfit.

What's the backstory on him being the Black Ranger? I only ever knew him as Green and White as a kid.

Yeah, I have never seen that black before. It is cool looking. And I am with you, I have never cared for the white ranger outfit. There is something too much about it.
It's from the Dino Thunder season where Tommy shows up as a mentor to the main ranger team, which at that point is only made up of 3 rangers Red, Blue, and Yellow.

I love that costume. For me it's the culmination of Tommy's growth, going from the literal enemy of the team, to leader, and then mentor for a new generation of Rangers. Also gold on black is just visually nice, while the Brachiosaurus elements of the design are relatively distinct both within the team and across other teams

Yeah I also really liked that kind of conclusion to his character as a whole.

I didn't really watch it, only caught snippets, and at first I though it was a cool idea that a ranger from my time was back solely as a Zordon figure (especially since it was a dinosaur repeat).

Then I heard he became the N+1 ranger with the extra super powers and I got mad. Did he steal the new team's spotlight like he did Jason's?

Fuckin' Tommy Oliver. Even when Jason was the Gold Ranger, Tommy just has to be the one in charge. Not the guy who drives a flying pyramid.

Not really. Partly because JDF not being able to commit full-time to filming in New Zealand meant they had to work around him (namely, by having him trapped in Ranger mode for a whole run of episodes). But also Dino Thunder is generally pretty dang good around developing out its characters - the actual successor to Tommy as the spotlight stealer is the season's own White Ranger, and even then, he doesn't stop the others from having proper arcs.

Dino Thunder was legit a pretty great season, and even with Tommy being there he doesn't really steal the spotlight because he's still more in the mentor role and while he has his own arc the main three protagonists and the show's White Ranger are the ones that receive more of a focus as the new generation.
