1996 was a huge year for IBM compatible PC gaming running DOS, Win 3.1, or Win 95. After years of 3D gaming, more complex games were coming out never seen before, and things got taken to the next level even more when more advanced video graphics cards were introduced. Which popular game from this year do you think is the best?

Quake followed by Diablo.

Both became templates for the genre for years to come.

Daggerfall would be the only other that is competition for those 2.

Quake will probably win the poll, but Hell March still slaps. Red Alert all day, baby

Duke 3d, personally

as much as I love Quake and Diablo. I think Duke is the peak of the 90s FPS and part of why it still holds up today.

Looking at that gif of Daggerfall... that must have been absolutely mind-blowing when it first released.

Between Red Alert and Diablo. 96 is when I got internet and those were my first big online games playing with friends after school.

I love Red Alert but it's between Quake and Diablo - gotta give the edge to Diablo simply because of how much damn time I spent harvesting ears in that game (and the demo, which was awesome as well).

There are areas that look better with weather effects too. Was truly something and the game world itself was huge, was considered the best successor to Ultima Underworld at the time which many of the PC games spawned from (including Duke 3D, Quake, and Tomb Raider among others in whole or in part.)

Toss up between Quake and Diablo. Feel like Diablo is the better game but Quake is the better platform and it lead to some legendary mods.

This shit right there, is my jam.

(Admittedly, this game came out in 1993 just a bit 3 years ahead, but still this shit is my jam)

I love Red Alert, and Hell March is one of the most iconic videogame tracks of all times. But Quake wins. Quake left a more impactul mark in history. Plus it still holds well these days.

Came to say Tomb Raider or Broken Sword. Glad to see I wasn't alone. I am now tempted to do a play through of Broken Sword again.

Quake, Duke Nukem 3D and Master of Orion II (among others) were my jam when I was kid.

I replayed MoOII a couple of years ago and I was surprised at how enjoyable it still is.

The answer is Civ 2 but since the poll absurdly lumps it in with "other" I went with Diablo.

I put more hours into Red Alert so I voted for that but Quake is the winner overall.

And yeah pretty sure Diablo was 97

Quake is life. On top of pushing the industry so far with its technical accomplishments, it's just a great game. It holds up well even today.

Master of Orion 2 set the standard for space 4Xes, can't go with anything but that.

Helluva year.

Personally, Quake. That game sent me down a rabbit hole that led me to understanding computers on a much deeper level. I literally would not be where I am today (professional non-game dev coder, because game dev seems like its own circle of entitlement hell) if it hadn't been for Quake, its multiplayer, and especially its mod scene and GPL'd engine scene.

Duke Nukem 3D easily.

I was lucky enough to be doing work experience that year at a software developer (I was only 15) and it was my first taste of online multiplayer, as we played it on their LAN. So much fun.

Duke Nukem 3D. One of the most-immersive PC games I've ever played. The amount of interactivity remains impressive even today.

It's followed by Quake.

A game that stands up today still - Master of Orion 2. But if I had another vote it'd be Quake.

I love Screamer 2 and Red Alert, but it's Quake.

By a long way. I still play it today (though I do have Screamer 2 installed!)

I was hoping I could say X-com, lol. That came out in '94, though.

Quake from that list is my definite answer, though.

I LOVED Red Alert and Mechwarrior 2, though.

Objectively, Quake.

Subjectively, Diablo.

Personally, probably Leisure Suit Larry 7 Love for Sail.. Toonstruck and Broken Sword were both wonderful adventure games too.

Or Red Alert, the original Red Alert is still most fun I've had with an RTS besides Red Alert 2. Westwood always remained the king of that particular genre for me.

What a great year for PC gaming, I think this was around the time I fell in love it until the mid-2000s when I got frustrated with how games were running for me.

On this list, it's a coin toss between Red Alert and Quake. I think Quake had a stronger legacy for the FPS genre, but both are classics.

I played Red Alert the most when I was younger because I had a computer with a slow CPU and no hardware rendering, but these days I'd absolutely go with Quake. It's great to play even with its most recent rerelease, and the stage it set for 3D, FPS, multiplayer gaming and modding was absurdly significant.
