Do you remember what the reaction was like in message boards, the press, and the like? Coming from MGS2, it must have been a huge shock.

You can still find the reactions on the old site. Famitsu scans dropped a couple days before TGS(?) and we all went nuts looking at the screenshots, which were mind boggling at the time. I thought it was awesome.

In general? Mostly shock.

Personally? "FUCK YEAH".

And to this day, Old Snake is my favorite version of the character. Followed by the one in the original Metal Gear Solid.

I didn't believe it was real till I reached the last part of the game, it was jarring for me

Oh boy when those scans dropped I couldn't believe the graphics. I actually couldn't even imagine controlling a character that detailed.

As a latecomer to the series around MGSV, my general opinion is its stupid and skips the coolest age hed be(late 40s/early 50s like venom) and went right into lame grandpa. The liquid fist fight is neat, but the disguise he wears is still the best solid snake design sans Iroquois

I was almost in tears when he puts the gun to his mouth in one of the trailers.

I loved it. I was sad to see that he aged (and could tell it was accelerated since Otacon was in the reveal trailer and didn't look much older), but excited about the storytelling potential. I wish the game lived up to the promise of that TGS 2005 trailer, it was a very ambitious title that we now know couldn't have been fully realized on that hardware.

I remember initially seeing the Old Snake design I was sad and intrigued.

I think they could've done better aesthetically if they had him look a little closer to his MGS2 self. But I think his behavior and general morale is even more different.

That Lee Van Cleef moustache didn't do him any favours, but I liked him anyway.

MGS4 reveal was fun. I remember not caring for old snake but thought the game looked crazy good.

For some reason, that was the time I started to give up and stopped relating with the "Shonen anime cute 16-17 years old boy saves the world" trope.

Seeing an old man being the main character was shocking, but I quickly embraced it.

Very very shocking. It was sort of sad in the way that one of the most iconic characters ever was on the brink like that. But then I just watched this trailer on my PS3 over and over and over again and could not believe the graphics of it all. Countless times I watched this video.

Thought he was gonna die in the middle of the game. I think old snake kept the tension high. I wish more games were willing to make their heros end up in a sad state like that.

I was on the Vestibule and the MGS boards back at IGN, but it was shocking to a lot of people. This includes myself, but I quickly understood where Kojima was trying to take the story. A lot of people assumed that he was going to die. I liked the original design a lot better than the final design that was kept for the game.

I like the look of Old Snake but they unfortunately destroyed the character and everything he stood for just to prop up the proxy war of Big Boss. Didn't even get his own epilogue for himself. Sad end for such a legendary character

I liked the fact he was old but I didn't like the reason. Should have just skipped ahead to a future where he aged naturally.

I remember the TGS 2005 trailer when it was revealed. It started as an FPS before the camera shifted and revealed Old Snake.

After the MGS2 Raiden switcheroo and the MGS3 Big Boss switcheroo... I didn't found it shocking. I found it expected.

I personally didn't care because well, every MGS title always had some crazy shit going on anyway and I was used to it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I remember overall reactions being slightly towards the weirded-out side of things, no?

MGS4 is one of my favorite entries in the series but it makes me sad every time I play it. I use the Act 3 disguise a lot, although I tend to take it off before cutscenes since it looks weird to see a young Snake coughing up a lung every two seconds. I've always wanted another MGS in between 2 and 4 before the accelerated aging kicked in. Just one last adventure with Solid in his prime.

The craziest moment during the build up to MGS4 was when they showed the cutscene that seamlessly pans the camera into gameplay. I couldn't believe how good it looked.

Oh man, pure denial and crazy theorizing. First, no one wanted to believe it was Snake. The running theory was that you were playing as Big Boss do the eye patch and the use of CQC, which Snake never used before. Nevermind the eye patch being on a different eye and all that. Then people were convinced you'd play as Raiden for part of the game, if not at least half, because the gameplay trailers where Snake uses the Face Camo Mask. And, because his hair sticks out of the back of the mask and his hair is grey from being old, people jumped that it was actually Raiden under the mask and not Snake because of the hair.

Eventually people started to accept that it was Snake but it was still shocking. Plus, those Kojima teases of the Young Snake Face Camo only fueled further theorizing. It was a made house.

The reaction to a Young Snake in the trailer was the best thing ever.

Never really dug the mustache. They had a teaser image a year or so prior with the full beard that I was expecting.
