A few people in this Reddit thread suggested that the absence could be related to Ubisoft's decision to throw in with the Epic Games Store, presumably forgetting that Epic began rolling out achievement support a few months ago. Not that it should matter—Far Cry 5 has achievements on Ubisoft Connect, for instance, even though they're not offered on Epic—and the achievements in questions are supported directly through Ubisoft's launcher anyway.

Ubisoft eventually confirmed that the absence of achievements in Assassin's Creed Valhalla is intentional, and also said that they'll also be omitted from future games. "Achievements are not not available for this title on PC, and this is an intended change," a rep wrote on the Ubisoft forums.

"Instead of Achievements for new games on Ubisoft Connect ... we have expanded the Challenges, which provide XP and other rewards in Ubisoft Connect. We know that this is a big change for a lot of you, and we appreciate your understanding in the matter."

Update: Ubisoft is adding achievements to Assassin's Creed Valhalla after all

Ubisoft now says the absence of achievements was 'unintended'.

To say that people are pissed would be understatement. And this is on top of other issues they introduced with Ubisoft Connect like Photo Mode not reacting in Valhalla if there are server issues, corrupted saves in WD Legion and Valhalla, delay in purchase deliveries for 24h or more, old bugs like multiple subscription reservations at full amount for Ubisoft+...

What is this, a cost saving measure? That would be bizarre considering the cost of supporting achievements on PC is almost certainly dwarfed by basically every other cost associated with a Ubisoft game

On one hand, I do think it's pretty dumb to remove a relatively low-effort feature that people enjoyed. On the other hand, achievements on Uplay almost always overlapped with club challenges, and those are what gave people points to unlock rewards. Club challenges still remain on the new client, so... I'm not terribly upset, personally. But I expect they'll double back on this based on the feedback.

With Origins and Odyssey it felt like the support of features on PC through Steamworks was finally making strides. Oh well. This isn't to my taste, but it's really the least of Ubisoft's problems.

EDIT: The Challenges system means they'll be restricted to fewer goals per game, I presume? They won't want to give great big gobs of uplay points for 50 challenge lists per game. Does their "use the challenges instead, stupid" suggestion mean "be happy with 4 to 6 goals instead"

I can't understand the motivations in doing so. The fact that it's a deliberate decision makes me even more confused.

They could just assign XP to achievements or whatever.

They've never properly supported achievements on PC. Most of their games on Steam don't have achievements. A few do like AC: Odyssey and Origins.

I'm alright with this. I grew up as a pc person, so I never knew the allure of achievements and trophies.

My interest in/obsession with achievements thankfully died with the switch to PC years ago, but that's just a weird move. Why not use the the achievements you have to come up with for consoles anyway and link whatever extra gimmicks you want to those instead of coming up with a whole new system? What? Sounds like extra work to me just to piss off people. Then again, we're talking about Ubisoft.

I'd bet they are going to more thoroughly overhaul Connect / Uplay and integrate it there and it's a casualty of a revamp.

Connect is a shitshow. Force closing a game on you if you lose your internet connection without any option to save.

That's essentially what club challenges have always been. Achievements (especially in all the AC games) felt mostly redundant to me.

YEah but why not just keep Achievements that you already implemented for consoles and assign XP to them? Why go and make entirely new set for PC (less of them compared to console achevements)?

This is IMO a non-issue, specially when challenges exist.

Who? The 30 comments in the PC Gamer article? Redditors?

People are always pissed at anything Ubisoft do.

The reddit thread has like 10k upvotes.

Of course, lots of clearly dumb chuds in that reddit thread too, somehow making this about Epic Games, like every topic is.

UPlay now Ubisoft Connect always had Achievement support. Well not always but soon after launch.

Right, but nobody cares about Uplay. It's trash and always will be. Nobody shows off their Uplay achievements/completed games to anyone.

Having all your achievements/completed games on one platform matters to some people. And on PC that platform is Steam.

I guess people that left feedback on places where Ubisoft says to leave feedback (Reddit, Ubisoft Forums) are nothing? Era really became place where unless your feedback is positive you should just be silent.

I don't care about achievements and their decision won't impact me personally, but they just pissed off a good chunk of an audience who expects some sort of reward for their troubles.

Sounds alright to me to be honest, challenges sound better than boring arbitrary achievements like "Liberate all outposts"

Yes, it's a direct persecution against you, I'm glad you noticed.

Cmon dex

It's not against me. But i did notice that lately when people post that they don't like something that big company did many responses are "it's non issue", "i don't understand outrage", "gamers are really entitled"...

really don't care about this, sucks for people that like them tho and I don't really get why they'd remove them since they are gonna be a thing on consoles still.

Probably a non issue for most people, but I went ahead and cancelled my Ubisoft+ sub over this yesterday.

I was hoping they'd expand the system, not kill it. Challenges are cool too, but I wish they'd still just provide both.

Certainly a weird move. A also browsed some older games on Ubi Connect I have and they removed challenges from older games it seems, but from new games they are removing achievemnts? So weird. And I totally forgot, how do you earn the Ubisoft coins? I see them nowhere offered, achievements nor challenges.

Well, I don't care at all about achievements on PC and challenges are essentially doing the exact same thing, so no problems at all here for me.

Consoles have always had these challenges too. I do think it's a weird decision to remove them on PC since they have to make them for the other platforms anyway, but not much is being lost in the grand scheme.

I very rarely buy Ubisoft games and they keep giving me reasons to buy even less of them.
They don't seem to care much about pleasing their PC audience even though i remember in their reports that PC was contributing a large amount to their revenue.

While achievements aren't a make or break for me, if a game already has achievements, like Ubisofts games, they should be added.

Huh? Didn't achievements start on steam pretty much?
Not like they're worth anything anyway, they're always just a wankscore
Xbox 360 was first.

Looks like you're right yeah :
"According to a GiantBomb article Steam achievements were introduced with The Orange Box, which was released 2007-10-09. Half-Life 2: Episode Two, Portal and Team Fortress 2 were the first games to add them. "

Considering I got on steam with the orange box, makes sense it's what I would remember first

Competition is great, isn't it?

But I wouldn't use their launcher anyway, any game not at Steam is bought on console.

Only way to get Ubisoft Points is with profile leveling (XP is gained through challenges) and by purchasing games on their store. And on top of that they expire now so you need to use them.

Regarding older games, they unlocked all rewards to everyone and removed Challenges for them.

A shame, I like achievements too.

Still, not sure why people keep saying "Competition is great" sarcastically, because competition IS great.

I'd be upset about this because Ubi's achievements actually let you unlock stuff, but seems like the unlocking stuff through doing in-game challenges is still a thing, so I'm not even sure what changed.

Achievements on Uplay were the most useless thing in existence, the only place they were visible were in the Uplay application and no one else could see them

they were probably baked in before the delay then
what's the point in having 2 big releases so close with different systems

Valhalla has to have triggers in game and save file because Ubisoft now offers cross platform saves. They just don't want to show achievements in Ubisoft Connect client.
