Funnily enough, Nomura has said that Cloud and Sephiroth are modeled on Miyamoto Musashi(Cloud) and Sasaki Kojiro (Sephiroth).

You can play the whole game as Tifa or Cloud.
Emma's model is replaced with Aerith.
And Genichiro's model is replaced with Sephiroth.

On a slightly related subject, I'm willing to admit that years ago when I got Dissidia 012 for my PSP and first set up Tifa as my playable fighter and Aerith as my assist...I got a little choked up.
That was the first game in many years where you could have the two fighting alongside each other. It felt real special and heartwarming.

Tifa as the Master Chief and Aerith as Cortana.
Tifa as Rachet and Aerith as Clank.
Tifa as Ico and Aerith as Yorda.
Tifa as Ryu and Aerith as Ken.
Tifa as Megaman and Aerith as Zero.
Tifa as Samus and Aerith as.....Ridley???
Aerith as Mario and Tifa as Luigi.
Tifa as Banjo and Aerith as Kazooie
